Many are often out of print by the time you get interested in them again. Just enter the book's name, and a list of available copies and dealers pops up within seconds, along with a range of conditions and prices that can fit just about any budget.

PC World, Lots of Bots (December 2002)

Once you know what you want to buy, you have to figure out who's got the best deal. That's where shopping bots earn their keep. These software agents scour the Web or their own massive databases for products you designate. Then, like the Greek messenger Hermes on amphetamines, they zip back with a list of prices and places to buy. If they do the job right, bots spare you from visiting dozens of stores to collect prices and allow you to sniff out the steals from the so-so deals...There are also category-specific bots, such as BookFinder.com and CDPriceCompare.com.

Internet-101.com, Shopping Online With Bots and Brains (December 2002)

Shopping online by visiting and browsing various name brand stores as well as using ShoppingBots to find the lowest price and availability has become a common place necessity in these days of homeland security and various unpleasant happenings. This column will list what I consider to be the very best resources and sources for the shopper in today's fast paced and ever changing world. I will list the latest ShoppingBots including price comparison Bots as well as the conventional shopping malls on the Internet. I will finish up this column with some excerpts from one of my previous columns on the security and safety of shopping on the Internet. Now let's begin with some excellent resources for this upcoming shopping season divided between Shopping Online Resources and then Shopping and Comparison Bots...BookFinder.com, The Open Marketplace for Books Online, http://www.bookfinder.com/

Whole Earth, The Amateur Scientist (December 2002)

For many decades the 'Amateur Scientist' column in Scientific American was a glorious outpost of dedicated enthusiasm. Here expensive scientific gear such as early lasers and x-ray machines were first presented in great detail as affordable do-it-yourself hacks. While the current editors of Scientific American stupidly canceled this clearinghouse, the old columns are remarkably timeless, and offer interested buffs the means to make cloud chambers, spectrometers, seismographs, telescopes, microscopes and all manner of cool instruments using only the most basic kind of stuff you'd find in basements or discount mail order venues...'The Scientific American Book of Projects for The Amateur Scientist', C.L. The Grand Rapids Press (MI), Shelf Life (November 17, 2002)

The Internet has been both a blessing and a curse for used book dealers, said John Edwards, manager of Argos Book Shop. Ray Walsh, owner of Curious Book Shop and The Archives Book Shop in East Lansing, opened Argos 26 years ago, long before the Internet had come into popular use. Argos still relies heavily on walk-in customers and sells 10-15 percent of its books over the Internet. In addition toabebooks.com, several other Web sites, including Amazon, eBay, BookFinder.com, alibris.com and bibliofind.com sell used books.

Forbes, Best of the Web (November 16, 2002)

Does exactly what its names implies, though not too much else. Created six years ago by then 19-year old UC Berkeley undergrad Anirvan Chatterjee, BookFinder.com now rakes through the collections of 40,000 new, used and out-of-print book sellers including Powell's Books and Abebooks. Search results are then arranged by ascending price order, and you are directed to the book seller's site for purchase...Separates prices by new and used titles.

The New York Times, They Never Left Home Without 'Em (November 8, 2002)

In the mid-19th century, peace, prosperity and the development of railway and steamship networks made foreign travel commonplace for middle-class Europeans and Americans. Because these new tourists ostensibly sought self-improvement as well as pleasure, they invariably had at hand the relevant title published by one of the three Leviathans of guidebook publishing: the German firm of Baedeker (which published guidebooks in German, French and English), John Murray of London and the Guides Joanne from the Parisian publisher Hachette...With the shift of the antiquarian book trade to the Internet, 19th- and early 20th-century guidebooks are easy to find through sources like BookFinder.com...They are not necessarily expensive, with price, as in all antiquarian book-selling, depending on age, scarcity and condition.

The Daily Telegraph (London) (United Kingdom), Great places to find books (November 5, 2002)

Saveur, Clementine Paddleford: First Champion of American Regional Cooking (November 2002)

'How America Eats' (Scribner, 1960) was Clementine Paddleford's seminal work, but she wrote many other books, including 'How America Eats: Best Recipes of 1949' (United Newspaper Corp., 1949), 'A Flower for My Mother' (Henry Holt and Company, 1958), 'Clementine Paddleford's Cook Young Cookbook' (Pocket Books, 1966), and 'The Best in American Cooking: Recipes' (Scribner, 1970). All are out of print, but you can sometimes find copies at used bookstores, at Kitchen Arts & Letters, or through BookFinder.com (www.bookfinder.com).

Siliconeer, The DotCom That Could: The Success of BookFinder.com (November 2002)

Looking back, I'm [Anirvan Chatterjee] still surprised to see my after-school hobby survive five years, spawn a business, and turn into a heavily-used Internet resource. As a high school student, I imagined that I would spend my career working in a stultifying Dilbertesque cubicle farm in the bowels of some Silicon Valley tech company. As an accidental entrepreneur, I'm thankful that I've gotten a chance to run a business with friends, and draw from my passion for both books and computers.

[BOOK] Not Your Mother's Cookbook: Unusual Recipes for the Adventurous Cook by Marina Bear (November 2002)

Drunken Trout: Trout are rarely found swimming around in streams of Scotch whiskey, but those two flavors do go awfully well together, as demonstrated by this recipe, found for us by Marie Elena Monaco in Michelle Evans' excellent book, Easy Seafood Recipes [published by Dell in 1975, long out-of-print, but we found plenty of used copies for sale on the excellent web site called www.BookFinder.com].

[BOOK] Warmly Inscribed: The New England Forger and Other Book Tales by Lawrence Goldstone & Nancy Goldstone (November 2002)

Books@Profit.com: There was a fifth service, BookFinder.com, which was merely a superlisting, combining the listings of all four of the other search engines on one page.

Far Eastern Economic Review (Hong Kong) (Hong Kong), The thrill of the search (October 24, 2002)

Ambivalence about the growing sophistication of Internet search engines is expressed. On the one hand it is great to have so much at ones fingertips; on the other users miss the excitement of tracking something down. All this came to mind with the announcement onfrom BookFinder.com, probably the biggest book search engine on the Net, that it had overhauled and relaunched its Web site. The site is a literary shopping engine, allowing readers to comparison-shop for new, used and rare books from bookstores around the world. It is a great site and has a wonderfully personal touch. But one cannot help feeling that some of the fun is being taken out of life.

Dow Jones Newswire, Loose Wire (October 24, 2002)

All this came to mind with the announcement on October 8 from California-based BookFinder.com, probably the biggest book search engine on the Net, that it had overhauled and relaunched its Web site. The free Web site was originally developed as a class project by Anirvan Chatterjee in Berkeley in 1996, but has since grown to be a "literary shopping engine," allowing readers to comparison-shop for new, used and rare books from a whopping 40,000 bookstores around the world. I defy you to not find the book you're looking for.

Dow Jones Newswire, Looking For A Book Used To Involve Bookstores (October 17, 2002)

All this came to mind with the announcement last week from BookFinder.com, probably the biggest book-search engine on the Net, that it had relaunched its Web site, including searches in French, German and Italian. The free Web site, developed as a class project by Anirvan Chatterjee in 1996, allows readers to comparison shop for new, used, and rare books from about 40,000 bookstores around the world. I defy you to not find the book you're looking for.

New Media Age (United Kingdom), Case Study: BookFinder.com (October 3, 2002)

BookFinder.com isn't an e-commerce book retailer, but its case is still relevant to e-tail. It was created by Anirvan Chatterjee, then 19 years old, as a university project while he was a sophomore at Berkeley University, California. BookFinder.com was a way to help Chatterjee search for books more easily. It was also a way, he says, to give independent stores a way to stand against the Amazons of the world. 'Small booksellers love working with us,' he says. 'We even out the marketplace for small stores and keep a friction-free market for them.' Now his student project, never intended as a business, aggregates 40,000 booksellers with 40m titles around the world, from big players like Amazon to family shops in Scottish villages.

[BOOK] Getting Started in Parapsychology by Carlos S. Alvarado (October 1, 2002)

For out of print books I recommend BookFinder.com (http://www.bookfinder.com), a search engine that connects with several book services that either carry used books themselves, or display the holdings of small used bookstores throughout the United States and in some European countries.

[BOOK] The Unfinished Revolution: How to Make Technology Work for Us--Instead of the Other Way Around by Michael L. Dertouzos (October 1, 2002)

BookFinder.com is another service, which searches several book-finder services like biblofind.com, abebooks.com, and usedbooks.com. Whether you visit BookFinder.com or any of the member services, you spend a couple of seconds to fill one or two lines of a standard e-form, which searches the inventory of all participating bookstores. Imagine how long it would take you to locate, visit, and query each of them manually. You would never do it.

[BOOK] Photo-Imaging: A Complete Guide to Alternative Processes by Jill Enfield (October 2002)

Sources: When Enfield began painting on the surface of her photographs in 1984, she was told she couldn't mix oil and water. The same spirit that allowed her to find a way to do just that infuses this book with creative rebelliousness. She developed a style of fusion photography that uses everything from the oldest techniques of photography through the latest digital formats. Enfield creates sumptuous, dreamlike images using the techniques of cyanotypes, kallitypes, platinum and palladium prints, ink jet transfers, tintypes, Polaroid transfers, and emulsion lifts. She finds ways of marrying the computer and the darkroom...BookFinder.com, www.BookFinder.com is a service for finding out-of-print books.

[BOOK] Not Your Mother's Cookbook: Unusual Recipes for the Adventurous Cook by Margaret Fox (October 2002)

Drunken Trout: Published by Dell in 1975, long out-of-print, but we found plenty of used copies for sale on the excellent website called www.bookfinder.com.

Jewish World Review, A Rare Book Collector's New Best-Friend (September 20, 2002)

Giving Chatterjee credit for revolutionizing book collecting may be like giving the man who hammered in the Golden Spike credit for building the railroad. Still, where would I be without him? More to the point, where would my Beddoes be? (I was now thinking of Copy No. 37 as 'my Beddoes.')

The News & Observer (NC), Used books dot-com (September 11, 2002)

I had searched for years for a book called 'Lady and the Tigers,' by Olga Greenlaw. I had heard it was a remarkable account of this intrepid nurse's adventures with Claire Chennault's Flying Tigers in China. But I had never located a single copy until Abebooks found a seller in Australia. If Abebooks became a place where collectors could find rare material, it also spurred new sellers to enter the market. And as other sites such as BookFinder.com came online (www.bookfinder.com), the nature of used-book pricing began to change.

The Washington Times, District can't get Olympics, baseball (September 1, 2002)

By the way, after I interviewed Bill Belichick's dad Steve last week, I immediately logged on to the Internet and bought a used copy of his 1962 book, "Football Scouting Methods" -- a bargain at $19.95 (shipping included). It was the last copy available at BookFinder.com. Eat your heart out.

The Kansas City Star, Need a Textbook? Check Out Online Shopping Comparison Sites (August 4, 2002)

Standing in bookstore lines to buy new or used texts doesn't have to be part of a college student's back-to-school ritual anymore. Several online shopping comparison services will do the bargain hunting for you. Give them the title or, better yet, the ISBN number for the book you want, and they'll search a stable of booksellers to see who has the book in stock, and at what price...I tested several comparison services with a search for a hardcover chemistry textbook, General Chemistry by Kenneth W. Whitten, published in March 1996, ISBN number 0030061881. Its list price: $113. BookFinder.com: This search yielded two booksellers - Half.com again, with its $3.50 used copy, and Alibris, with copies at $45.20 and $104.65.

IOBA Standard, Interview of Anirvan Chatterjee and Charlie Hsu, BookFinder.com (August 2002)

For example, we've been working for over a year now on a set of infrastructure improvements to BookFinder.com that (among many other things) will help users search for books in languages other than English. I'm [Chatterjee] currently working on a project to figure out how we can best improve new users' experience with the site.

The Bookseller (United Kingdom), We're Even Discussing Canada: It's Quiet in the US Book Industry, but Pessimism Has Abated (July 5, 2002)

Old-fashioned discount wars are back, particularly online (which will surely help frontlist sales), with Amazon marking down all titles over $15 and reducing the threshold for free shipping. BN.com has pushed discounts on its top titles back to 40%, and is shipping all orders of two books or more for free. And rising general e-tailer Buy.com has challenged Amazon by promising to exceed any of its discounts by 10%. All of which has been enough to distract us from spring's angst over the precipitous rise of online used book sales (including newly released titles and even advanced reading copies) everywhere from Amazon to Half.com to BookFinder.com

The Herald Sun (Melbourne) (Australia), Drag Net (July 3, 2002)

BookFinder.com does exactly that. No sales here, just a search engine with links to those booksellers which stock your edition. The results of my search were plentiful...The FAQ here is excellent...and will really help your search.

Yahoo! Internet Life, 50 Most Incredibly Useful Sites (July 2002)

The Daily Hampshire Gazette (MA), Kids in the Kitchen (June 28, 2002)

The book was given away after my sisters and I grew up and left home. But I've never forgotten it. On impulse recently, I logged onto www.BookFinder.com and typed in what I thought had been its title: "Come Into The Kitchen." Somewhat to my surprise - considering that 40 years or more have gone by since I last saw the cookbook - I got it right, and there were several copies available from British booksellers. I ordered one and when it came, I was delighted to find that the cookbook, albeit rather dated, is just as I remember, right down to the scone recipe and the sketches of a prim-looking girl in an apron!

Forbes, Best of the Web (June 25, 2002)

This issue of Best of the Web is devoted to reinvesting in yourself. Whether you are seeking a source for fresh innovations or a place to learn about Shakespeare or the Genomics Era, you'll find it here...BookFinder.com is simply a quick bot. Searching BookFinder.com yields hits from more than 40,000 booksellers, and will link you directly to the item page at other sites like ABE, Alibris, and JustBooks. BEST: Price comparisons are quick and efficient due to the eclectic mix of other booksellers and portals.

The Washington Times, Car Buffs Can Find Books on the Internet (June 14, 2002)

The Internet can come to the rescue of auto enthusiast looking for hard-to-find books and other material on the subject. They can try the online book search engine www.BookFinder.com. The New York Times Magazine, An Actual Internet Success Story (June 9, 2002)

This isn't like Napster putting music up on the Internet so you can download it free, but the market has broadened in a way all but unthinkable seven or eight years ago. Anirvan Chatterjee, who started BookFinder.com, says: 'You're almost guaranteed that if there's a copy of a book out there, anywhere, you have access to it.' A foreseeable consequence of this, he adds, is that publishers are monitoring what does sell on the Internet, with a view to keeping more and more books in print and in the catalog -- push-button technologies allow them to do this. In other words, the numbers of available new books will continue to grow, and sharply.

The New York Times, Book Bargains to Warm Mommy's Heart (May 16, 2002)

Normally, when I decide to buy a lot of books online, fast, I don't do it at Amazon.com. I'm a habitual used-book buyer who trolls for bargains at BookFinder.com and Half.com, where I can easily find cheap well-thumbed copies to remind me of all the other readers who came before me.

[TV] BBC (United Kingdom), Q: Why get online? A: To find an out-of-print book (May 15, 2002)

Finally, at BookFinder.com, I find hundreds of copies. BookFinder.com has a database that taps into thousands of shops across the world with prices ranging up to $100. I find a copy for just $14 and email the bookshop direct to check that the copy looks like the one currently sitting somewhere in London's sewers.

The Times (San Francisco Bay Area), Avid Reader Turns Passion Into Start-up. A Love of Books and a Search for Doonesbury Titles Led Former Cal Student to Launch BookFinder.com (May 11, 2002)

All Anirvan Chatterjee wanted to do was complete a Doonesbury book collection. What he ended up getting was his own start-up business venture...Now, the site receives millions of hits per month from book hunters searching for first editions of "Valley of the Dolls" or "The Smart Little Mouse." And with the site's ability to search more than 40,000 sellers, many go away satisfied. "It's a good site to try and locate a title," said Lynn Kuehl, co-owner at Diablo Bookstore in Walnut Creek. Kuehl said he mainly uses the site to research book values and special order books for customers from sellers the engine searches. "It's really quite helpful," Kuehl said. "We definitely use it." The site is free for users. The business is supported mainly through advertising, augmented by referral fees from some sellers. After conducting a book search, users can link to several book sellers to buy it. "We wanted to be really, really ethical with the site, and make sure people knew what was going on," Chatterjee said. "We didn't want any hidden finder fees or things like that." The philosophy seems to have worked. While other new and used book sites such as BigWords.com, Books.com and JustBooks have gone through restructurings, acquisitions or shutdowns, BookFinder.com continues building on its success.

The Milwaukee Journal Sentinel, Bytes: Technology Briefing (May 7, 2002)

Searching for books online - rare, used or new - is easier with a Web site like www.BookFinder.com. This search site claims to scan the inventories of over 40,000 booksellers, 'from behemoths like Amazon.com to tiny mom-and-pop indies,' for matches to book queries. Type in the book's title or an author to find out where a book is for sale and at what price. Once linked to the book, visitors can buy it online direct from the bookseller. The addition of used book stores to the search is valuable for finding titles that online giants say are out of print.

The Miami Herald, Action Line (May 5, 2002)

'I'm trying to find the value of a book given to me by my grandfather. It's the original 1901 autobiography of Booker T. Washington. How it works: you plug in a title or author name along with the condition you desire (new, used or out-of-print), and the search engine pulls up and links to sites the title is offered. Don't come here to browse; you won't find summaries or articles. BEST: Great for comparison shopping: search results are arranged by price.

How quaint: a book site that deals only in books. BookFinder.com is especially good for hard-to-find books, connecting bookstores big and small. Forbes, Best of the Web: Rare Books (March 2002)

Some say the Web tolls a death knell for books. But why skim a virtual Adventures of Huckleberry Finn when you could be reading Twain's classic between the burnished leather boards of an 1884 quarto first edition with gilt imprints and light foxing? The Web is a giant flea market connecting buyers to sellers...BookFinder.com is simply a quick bot. You cannot browse through subjects looking for a title. Searching the BookFinder.com yields hits from more than 40,000 booksellers, and will link you directly to the item page at other sites like ABE, Alibris, and JustBooks. The Daily Post (Liverpool) (United Kingdom), Happy Ending to the 50-Year Saga of Search for Rare Book (February 25, 2002)

How to find that elusive book -- tracing that elusive book has never been easier thanks to the dawn of the internet. A number of websites have been created dedicated to helping people search for that long-cherished edition. Perhaps the best known is the amazon.com website which has established itself as one of the biggest on-line book stores. The site also offers a second hand book service with links to dealers, mainly in America, with prices and details of the condition of books. A similar service is available on the dedicated BookFinder.com.

Liverpool Echo (England) (United Kingdom), Tapping Into Tops and Handy Hints (February 25, 2002)

One thing Tipking can't help you do is find rare books - but BookFinder.com (http://www.bookfinder.com) can. This is a site I first discovered 12 months ago or more and found to be a bit limited, but since then it has developed a great deal. It has now become probably the most useful site on the web for finding rare and out-of-print books and performed particularly well when I tested it by looking for some old favourites from my schooldays. You use it just as if you were searching on a regular retail site like Amazon. The list of matches, with prices, is linked to individual booksellers. Most are in the US, but there are now plenty of UK ones as well and it is then a simple matter to e-mail the seller directly for more details of how to buy the book. If it's a shop offering online sales, you'll be able to order it there and then.

[TV] CNN, CNN Sunday Morning (February 10, 2002)

All right folks, take out a pen and paper or your Palm Pilot or something and follow along as we browse. First of all the first place to go of course as Lance would tell us and certainly his bosses would confirm that, is PC Magazine's site -- PCMag.com where you'll find this list of a hundred sites -- actually two hundred -- a hundred obscure, a hundred not so obscure. Then you can go into these various places, for example, www.BookFinder.com. So you could get used books on Amazon, but this is a little more obscure. I believe what it does is it links bookstores all across the country which is kind of cool because it keeps independent bookstores going. I plugged in one of my favorite books, I'm a space guy -- Valentine Lebedev -- Diary of a Cosmonaut, very obscure title and I found it in six places around the country. Pretty cool?
