Building a strong family is a challenge in the best of times. How much more when marriage is being redefined, biblical approaches to discipline are under constant fire, and "family values" is more a campaign slogan than a personal priority of elected officials.
The family is in trouble today. Stable homes have become a quaint anomaly, rather than the norm. To check the erosion of the home and family as the basic unit of society, Jay Adams calls us to a careful understanding and application of scriptural principles.
Christians will find this volume full of practical, biblical advice on Christ-centered family living, communicating with family members, family guidance and discipline, living with an unbelieving spouse, and many other areas. Pastors, counselors, and study groups will value this work for its insight, clarity, and faithfulness to Gods Word. This best-selling title will challenge, encourage, and aid the reader in the development of a truly Christian home. [via]

"It has become fashionable to write books with titles such as Religion in an Age of Science (Barbour), Theology for a Scientific Age (Peacocke), or Theology in the Age of Scientific Reasoning (Murphy). They signify the recognition that the interaction between science and religious reflection is not limited to those topics (such as cosmic history) concerning which the two disciplines offer complementary insights. It involves also an engagement with habits of thought which are natural in a culture greatly influenced by the success of science. To take this stance is not to submit to slavery to the spirit of the age, but simply to acknowledge that we view things from where we stand, with all the opportunities and limitations inherent in that particular perspective. . . . My concern is to explore to what extent we can use the search for motivated understanding, so congenial to the scientific mind, as a route to being able to make the substance of Christian orthodoxy our own. Of course, there are some revisions called for in the process, but I do not find that a trinitarian and incarnational theology needs to be abandoned in favour of a toned-down theology of a Cosmic Mind and an inspired teacher, alleged to be more accessible to the modern mind. A scientist expects a fundamental theory to be tough, surprising and exciting. "Throughout, my aim will be to seek an understanding based on a careful assessment of phenomena as the guide to reality. Just as I cannot regard science as merely an instrumentally successful manner of speaking which serves to get things done, so I cannot regard theology as merely concerned with a collection of stories which motivate an attitude to life. It must have its anchorage in the way things actually are, and the way they happen. . . . A bottom-up thinker is bound to ask, What makes you think this story is a verisimilitudinous account of Reality? The anchorage of Christianity in history is to be welcomed, despite its hazards. For me, the Bible is neither an inerrant account of propositional truth nor a compendium of timeless symbols, but a historically conditioned account of certain significant encounters and experiences. Read in that way, I believe it can provide the basis for a Christian belief with is certainly revised in the light of our twentieth-century insights but which is recognizably contained within an envelope of understanding in continuity with the developing doctrine of the Church throughout the centuries." - from the introduction [via]

Bible translators have, through inattention to figures of speech, made serious translation blunders, clouding the real meaning of many important passages of God's Word. E. W. Bullinger's volume, first published in 1898, clarifies 217 distinct figures of speech used in the Bible. Walter C. Kaiser, dean of Trinity Evangelical Divinity School, calls it "the best handbook on figures of speech. It should be on every exegete's shelf."
In systematic order, this classic gives the proper pronunciation of each figure of speech, its etymology or origin, and a number of Scripture passages where the figure of speech is used, giving full explanation of its use in each context. Figures of Speech Used in the Bible cites nearly eight thousand Bible passages and includes five appendices and seven indexes, making it even more valuable as a reference tool. [via]

The thought of Paul Ricoeur continues its profound effect on theology, religious studies, and biblical interpretation. Introduced by Mark Wallace, the twenty-one papers collected in this volume-some familiar, many translated here for the first time-constitute the most comprehensive anthology of Ricoeur's writings in religion since 1970. The writings are thematically divided into five parts: the study of religion philosophers of religion the Bible and genre theological overtures practical theology Ricoeur's hermeneutical orientation and his deep sensitivity to the mystery and power of religious language offer fresh insight into the transformative potential of sacred literature, including the Bible. "How one thinks about scarcity, property, work, and needs cannot remain unchanged after reading this book. Most Christian reflection on the economy has been in terms of social ethics and has focused on inequitable distribution of jobs and goods in the market economy. Meeks writes on the economy as a Trinitarian theologian, and a very good one. The result is a more searching critique with more radical implications for individual Christians and for the churches. God The Economist should edify and challenge liberals and conservatives alike." -- John B. Cobbs, Jr., Claremont School of Theology [via]

John Bunyon was an English 17th Christian writer and preacher. He is best known for his allegory The Pilgrims Progress. Bunyan wrote The Holy War while being imprisoned for preaching without a license. This confinement lasted 12 years. The Holy War, made by King Shaddai upon Diabolus, for the regaining of the metropolis of the world; or, the losing and taking again of the town of Mansoul is a book of spiritual warfare. In this allegory an old tinker named Bedford is the central character. He is an independent Baptist. When telling the story of the symbolic battles Bunyan uses actual military tactics, which he may have learned from a soldier in Cromwell's army. [via]

Professor Brueggemann here examines the literature and experience of an era in which Israel's prophets faced the pastoral responsibility of helping people to enter into exile, to be in exile, and to depart out of exile. He addresses three major prophetic traditions: Jeremiah (the pathos of God), Ezekiel (the holiness of God), and 2 Isaiah (the newness of God). This literature is seen to contain the theological resources for handling both brokenness and surprise with freedom, courage, and imagination. Throughout, Brueggemann demonstrates how these resources offer vitality for ministry today. [via]

Bringing together two of our greatest sources of meaning and transformation
This book marries two partners that are made for each other. The result, as in all good unions, is mutual enrichment and deeper life.
--Jack Shea, author of Stories of God
Now available in paperback, this moving and enlightening book presents us with a compelling vision of what can happen when we take the opportunity to connect stories and rituals--a vision of individuals and communities transformed through a deeper sense of connection to our loved ones, our communities, and God. Herbert Anderson and Edward Foley reveal how when stories and rituals work together, they have the potential to be both mighty and dangerous--mighty in their ability to lift us up and help us make these connections beyond ourselves and dangerous in challenging us to learn to live with complexity and contradiction.
They show how much more meaningful a baptism, wedding, or funeral can be when liturgy is made to include and recognize the personal stories of those involved. Suddenly, these familiar life-cycle rituals are infused with new life as their participants become connected in a narrative web linking past and present, human and divine. Newly created rituals can also help us connect our stories to the divine story, giving meaning to what we experience and bringing us closer to God.
Ministers, worship leaders, and pastoral caregivers can use this approach to storytelling and ritual to find ways to bring together worship and pastoral care, diminishing fragmentation and fostering coherence in their religious communities. [via]

The Old Testament is a collection of writings which came into being over a period of more than a thousand years in the history of the people of Israel and which reflect the life of the people in this period. Therefore, there is a reciprocal relationship between the writings or "books" of the Old Testament and the life of Israel in its history. The understanding of the texts presupposes insights into the historical context and the development of the life of Israelite society, while at the same time the texts themselves are the most important, indeed for the most part the only, source for it. This "Introduction" attempts to take account of this reciprocal relationship. The first part deals with the history of Israel. However, its approach differs from most accounts of this history. It takes the Old Testament texts themselves as a starting point and first of all outlines the picture of historical developments and associations which the texts present. An attempt is then made, on this basis, to reconstruct historical developments by introducing material from outside the Bible. This method of working leads to close connections between the second and third parts, because it has to take account of the nature and original purpose of the texts and their function within the biblical books as they are now. The second part attempts to present the texts collected in the Old Testament as expressions of the life of Israel. The third part discusses the books of the Old Testament in their present form. [via]

Don Browning's important work critically appropriates the distinctive insights of religious ethics and contemporary psychology to inform and reform both. Here he elaborates the moral context for pastoral care by formulating five levels of practical moral thinking, illustrates them in two case studies involving homosexuality, and integrates the levels into a method of theological practice. It is a helpful but not dominating ethical framework for pastoral care and counseling useful to students, pastors, and congregations alike. "Browning, in this book, continues efforts to teach religious ethics to those working as counselors.... It presents a clear argument and method for laying practical and workable foundations of religious ethics in pastoral work." -Clergy Journal "[Browning] points out that much of our pastoral care is undergirded by unexamined or only partially examined moral and ethical thinking.... In our efforts to avoid moralism, we have moved more and more toward a stance of ethical neutrality which has done a disservice to the people who look to us for help. Pastoral care and counseling need to be grounded in a practical moral theology or theological ethics." -Christian Century "Browning provides ample resources for pastors to begin a discipline of critical moral reflection, especially in their role as counselors.... His borrowings from moral philosophers and theological ethics are explicated in the context of case studies and should prove helpful for anyone engaged in the practice of ministry." -Religious Studies Review Don S. Browning is Alexander Campbell Professor Emeritus of Ethics and the Social Sciences, Divinity School, University of Chicago. His work at the intersection of theological ethics and social sciences has led to such pioneering and influential works as Religious Thought and the Modern Psychologies and A Fundamental Practical Theology. First published in 1987 by Fortress Press, this 20th anniversary edition of this classic bestseller includes a new Afterword from the author. Here, in narrative form, is an account of the activity of Jesus of Nazareth, scrupulously constructed so that it does not undercut the insights of New Testament scholarship. What makes it different from other such attempts is that Jesus never actually appears. What we find everywhere is his shadow, his effect. Such an approach avoids the usual pitfalls of the genre and lends this story - attributed to a fictitious narrator - an attraction, freshness, and power all its own. Tension and interest are maintained to the end, even for those sated with books about Jesus. Careful documentation in the footnotes shows how much of the narrative is based on ancient sources. [via]

One word of truth outweighs the entire world. So said Aleksandr Solzhenitsyn, the former Soviet Unions one-man dissident movement whose courageous stand for truth helped topple his countrys machinery of propaganda, deception, and terror.
But in the West today it appears that truth in any objective form is dead. At best it is relative and at worst it is created. Where does this leave us?
In Time for Truth Os Guinness argues that truth is far from deadnot only is it alive and well, but it is undeniable and far from inconsequential. Truth matters supremely, he says, because without truth there is no freedom. In fact, truth is freedom, and the only way to live a free life is to become a person of truth.
Guinness examines the crisis of truth and explores the personal, practical, and public considerations of becoming people of truth. Living in truth has consequences on many areas of life, including politics, scholarship, and business. But it begins and ends with the personalwith each of us as who we really are. [via]

Women and Redemption will take readers of Carol Lee Flinders's delightful Enduring Grace: Living Portraits of Seven Women Mystics to the next level. Ruether, the author of the classic text of feminist theology Sexism and God-Talk, here systematically explores questions of gender and redemption chronologically from the time of the New Testament right up to current feminist thinkers (appropriately enough including herself). From Augustine and Gregory of Nyssa to the great medieval women mystics (Julian of Norwich, Hildegard of Bingen, Mechthild of Magdeburg); from Calvin and Luther to the Quakers, Shakers, and abolitionists of the 19th century, concluding with feminist theologies in Latin America, Africa, and Asia, Ruether succinctly explores her thesis: that while in the early years of the Church a number of paradigms were offered, by the fourth century belief in equality between men and women had been eliminated--or relegated to a genderless afterlife.
Fairly argued and balanced, and written in Ruether's clear, personal style, this book is an immensely useful overview. It will give almost any open-minded reader a superb introduction to more than a dozen crucial writers even as it explores the long, unfolding saga of the place of women and equality in the redemption story. --Doug Thorpe [via]
