› Find signed collectible books: 'Amphitryon and Two Other Plays'
Plautus wrote upwards of fifty plays, of which twenty have survived.
This anthology includes his best plays and also seeks to give some idea of his range. His forte was farce, and these selections exemplify at least two of his favorite farcical devices: mistaken identity (Amphitryon) and the lecherous old codger (Casina). The Pot of Gold reveals what Plautus could do with the subtler humor to be evoked from character. [via]More editions of Amphitryon and Two Other Plays:

In addition to the reports of five English visitors to Ferney, essays by Haydn Mason, Erich Auerbach, Ernst Cassirer, and Robert M. Adams are included. The final section of the edition, "The Climate of Controversy," summarizes the debate surrounding Voltaire's works and includes essays by Peter Gay, Raymond Naves, Gustave Lanson, and John Morley. When "Memoirs" was first published in 1975, it created quite a bit of turbulence in the media - though long self-identified as a gay man, Williams' candour about his love life, sexual encounters, and drug use was found shocking in and of itself, and such revelations by America's greatest living playwright were called "a raw display of private life" by "The New York Times Book Review". As it turns out, more than thirty years later, Williams' look back at his life is not quite so scandalous as it once seemed; he recalls his childhood in Mississippi and St. Louis, his prolonged struggle as a "starving artist," the "overnight" success of "The Glass Menagerie" in 1945, the death of his long-time companion Frank Merlo in 1962, and his confinement to a psychiatric ward in 1969 and subsequent recovery from alcohol and drug addiction, all with the same directness, compassion, and insight that epitomize his plays. OVID'S EPIC POEM--whose theme of change has resonated throughout the ages--has become one of the most important texts of Western imagination, an inspiration from Dante's time to the present day, when writers such as Salman Rushdie and Italo Calvino have found a living source in Ovid's work. In this new, long-anticipated translation of Metamorphoses, Charles Martin combines a close fidelity to Ovid's text with verse that catches the speed and liveliness of the original. Portions of the translation have already appeared in such publications as Arion, The Formalist, The Tennessee Quarterly, and TriQuarterly. Hailed in Newsweek for his translation of The Poems of Catullus ("Charles Martin is an American poet; he puts the poetry, the immediacy of the streets back into the English Catullus. The effect is electric"), Martin's translation of Metamorphoses will be the translation of choice for contemporary readers. [via]

The Norton Anthology of English Literature is an anthology of English literature published by the W. W. Norton & Company. First published in 1962, it has gone through nine editions in a half-century; as of 2006 there are over eight million copies in print, making it the publisher's best-selling anthology. M. H. Abrams, a critic and scholar of Romanticism, served as General Editor for its first seven editions, before handing the job to Stephen Greenblatt, a Shakespeare scholar and Harvard professor. Spread across six volumes and divided into two sets, the anthology provides an overview of poetry, drama, prose fiction, essays and letters from Beowulf to the beginning of the 21st century. [via]

This anthology covers writers and works of English literature. Among the major works included are the complete texts of Milton's "Paradise Lost" and Mary Shelley's "Frankenstein"; Shakespeare's "Twelfth Night"; Beckett's tragicomic "Endgame"; and Achebe's "Things Fall Apart". The 7th edition features works by 60 women writers, 21 writers new to the "Norton Anthology", 20 represented with additional selections or reselected works. Fourteen new and expanded thematic clusters gather short texts that illuminate cultural, historical, and literary concerns within each period. Examining 20th-century literature in English, this edition reflects the global reach of literature in English with ten new authors - Jean Rhys, Chinua Achebe, Alice Munro, V. S. Naipaul, Anita Desai, Les Murray, Salman Rushdie, J. M. Coetzee, Eavan Boland, and Paul Muldoon. "The Persistence of English", a new essay by Geoffrey Nunberg, Stanford University and Xerox Palo Alto Research Center, provides a lively exploration of the English language - its emergence and spread, and its apparent "triumph" as a world language. Visual materials are included from several periods - Hogarth's satiric "Marriage A-la-Mode", engravings by Blake, and illustrations by Dante Gabriel Rossetti. Period introductions, author headnotes, annotations, and bibliographies have been thoroughly revised, many completely rewritten, for the 7th Edition. New pedagogical features include timelines for each period and revised endpaper maps. The text is accompanied by 2 audio CDs. [via]

This is the best film book of the mid-'90s and probably the best anthology of writing about the movies ever published. Here Graham Greene, Delmore Schwartz, and Susan Sontag sit down with Akira Kurosawa, Janet Leigh, and Budd Schulberg; Robert Stone, Julia Phillips, and Kenneth Anger shake hands with Louise Brooks, Gore Vidal, and John Updike. This book is a provocative, original study of the major plays of Shakespeare; more than that, however, it is one of the few critical works to have strongly influenced theatrical productions.
Peter Brook and Charles Marowitz are among the many directors who have acknowledged their debt to Jan Kott, finding in his analogies between Shakespearean situations and those in modern life and drama the seeds of vital new stage-conceptions. Readers all over the worldShakespeare Our Contemporary has been translated into nineteen languages since it appeared in 1961have similarly found their responses to Shakespeare broadened and enriched.
