Intrigues. Illicit affairs.
Scheming corporate climbers.
Welcome to the IRS.
Plug anyone's name -- yes, yours -- into the computer at the Internal Revenue Service, add a Social Security number, and within three minutes, they know this about you: every place you've ever worked, how much money you make, who your spouse is, and where your investments are. And that's just the beginning.
Confessions of a Tax Collector is the story of how being granted virtually unlimited power over other people's lives can radically alter one's own. Twelve years ago, Richard Yancey needed a job. He answered a blind ad in the newspaper offering a starting salary higher than what he'd made over the three previous years combined. It turned out that the job was as a field officer with the Internal Revenue Service, the most hated and feared organization in the federal government. It also turned out that Yancey was brilliant at it.
In this secretive, paranoid culture, built around the premise of war, Yancey became a revenue officer, the man who gets in his car, drives to your house, knocks on the door, and makes you pay. Never mind that his car is littered with candy wrappers, his palms are sweaty, and he can't remember where he stashed his own tax records. He's there on the authority of the United States government.
Yancey's keen eye and sardonic wit capture all the intrigue, fury, and ridiculous vanity beneath the dark suits and mirrored sunglasses. While sketching an astonishing cast of too-strange-for-fiction characters, Yancey details how the job changed him, and how he managed to pull himself back from the brink of moral, ethical, and spiritual bankruptcy.
Confessions of a Tax Collector is a memoir that reads like fiction. If only that were true. You may never lie to your accountant again . . . because it's the Internal Revenue Service's world -- and we just pay taxes in it.

Pinpoints the dangers to the ordinary people of the West of allowing the debt crisis to continue. It proposes debt relief as a means not only of addressing questions of justice and equity, but also an essential means of addressing problems in the West. Environmental resources which we all share, most notably the rain forests, are being cashed in by debtor nations - the pressure to earn foreign exchange promotes illegal drug exports as the best means of survival, immigration from impoverished countries, often illegal, stirs up race hatred and markets for export goods diminish as poor countries fall into a downward spiral of decreasing National income and political instability due to rising unemployment. The impulse in the 1960s and 70s to achieve fairness and a balanced perspective in our nations textbooks and standardized exams was undeniably necessary and commendable. Then how could it have gone so terribly wrong? Acclaimed education historian Diane Ravitch answers this question in her informative and alarming book, The Language Police: How Pressure Groups Restrict What Students Learn. Author of 7 books, Ravitch served as the U.S. Assistant Secretary of Education from 1991 to 1993. Her expertise and her 30-year commitment to education lend authority and urgency to this important book, which describes in copious detail how pressure groups from the political right and left have wrested control of the language and content of textbooks and standardized exams, often at the expense of the truth (in the case of history), of literary quality (in the case of literature), and of education in general. Like most people involved in education, Ravitch did not realize "that educational materials are now governed by an intricate set of rules to screen out language and topics that might be considered controversial or offensive." In this clear-eyed critique, she is an unapologetic challenger of the ridiculous and damaging extremes to which bias guidelines and sensitivity training have been taken by the federal government, the states, and textbook publishers.
In a multi-page sampling of rejected test passages, we discover that "in the new meaning of bias, it its considered biased to acknowledge that lack of sight is a disability," that children who live in urban areas cannot understand passages about the country, that the Aesop fable about a vain (female) fox and a flattering (male) crow promotes gender bias. As outrageous as many of the examples are, they do not appear particularly dangerous. However, as the illustrations of abridgment, expurgation, and bowdlerization mount, the reader begins to understand that our educational system is indeed facing a monumental crisis of distortion and censorship. Ravtich ends her book with three suggestions of how to counter this disturbing tendency. Sadly, however, in the face of the overwhelming tide of misinformation that has already been entrenched in the system, her suggestions provide cold comfort. --Silvana Tropea [via]More editions of The Language Police: How Pressure Groups Restrict What Students Learn:

This work lists the names of the taxpayers resident in about half of the North Carolina counties formed before 1786. The object of this present volume is to set down in writing, while research is fresh, a list of those persons paying poll taxes or property taxes sometime between the years 1701 and 1786. For genealogical purposes, of course, the intent is to identify individuals in relation to a specific time and place, and to make public a class of records likely to assist in the advancement of research. The majority of names given here were copied from tax lists microfilmed at the North Carolina State Archives in Raleigh (roll numbers 155.108 and 115.49). Supplementing this basic list, and integrated throughout the text, are names which have been extracted from The North Carolinian, afterwards called the Journal of North Carolina Genealogy and then simply North Carolina Genealogy, from which journal have also been taken names of persons owning headrights and landrights. For ease of reference the names of taxpayers are given in a single alphabetical sequence. In all cases taxpayers are listed by county of residence and date, and in some cases additional data is supplied. The combined lists, with repeat entries for those people who appear in more than one tax list, contain approximately 28,000 names. [via]

› Find signed collectible books: 'Perfectly Legal: the Covert Campaign to Rig Our Tax System to Benefit the Super Rich - AND CHEAT EVERYBODY ELSE'
Most Americans would agree that they are duty bound as beneficiaries of our democracy to pay taxes, and the majority of us do pay-exorbitantly. But what about those who do not pay their fair share? David Cay Johnston, a Pulitzer Prize-winning reporter for the New York Times, here reveals how fairness and equity have eroded from the American tax system. Johnston describes in shocking detail the loopholes our government provides the "super rich"--from private individuals to profitable corporations-to hide their wealth, to defer or evade tax payments, and to pass the bill to law-abiding middle-class Americans. The loss in revenue "imposes a severe cost on honest taxpayers" through reduced services, increased federal debt, and a weight on the middle class that threatens to impede its ability to achieve upward social mobility.
Admitting the extreme complexity of our economy and by extension our tax code, Johnston points out that the very wealthy do, of course, pay taxes. However, because of shelters that allow them to understate most of their income, they pay little more on average than most Americans on the dollar. This is regressive, and unquestionably favors the superrich. Johnston includes examples of outrageous corporate malfeasance (such as companies that establish off-shore tax addresses) and exposes the tax benefits of the particularly loathsome practice made famous by Jack Welch, in which thousands of wage earners are laid off while a handful of executives are granted hundreds of millions of dollars through deferred compensation, company stock options, and lucrative retirement packages, all at stock holders' xpense. In addition to these offenses, he describes the tax evasion methods of those who simply defy the law and are emboldened by a beleaguered IRS that is too underfunded to serve as an effective deterrent to tax cheats. Johnston calls for a complete overhaul of the system. But because those who most benefit from these laws comprise the "donor class" that supports the government power structure, our prospects for reform remain very bleak. --Silvana Tropea [via]More editions of Perfectly Legal: The Covert Campaign to Rig Our Tax System to Benefit the Super Rich--And Cheat Everybody Else:

America's worst fears about the Internal Revenue Service are true. As former IRS employee Shelley L. Davis shows, the most hated federal agency in Washington, D.C., is a cesspool of corruption, incompetence, and hubris. Her Kafka-like insider's account of how IRS bigwigs mismanage their employees, destroy incriminating documents, and obstruct congressional inquiries is both a highly entertaining narrative (Davis tells her story with panache) and an extremely frustrating one (because this is where the money goes). Consider this "one long whistle-blow," Davis tells readers, and, indeed, she has performed a public service by writing her book. [via]

Kenneth M. Morris and Virginia B. Morris update this now classic handbook to the fundamental principles that govern personal financial management. The Wall Street Journal Guide to Understanding Personal Finance covers the basics of banking, credit, home finance, financial planning, investing, and taxes in a concise and unambiguous manner. The details--amplified by graphics and peripheral data that consistently make its points easier to understand--range from the pros and cons of different types of banking institutions and the various kinds of checking accounts they offer, to the methods available for handling credit-card billing errors and the steps to employ when deciding how large a mortgage one can afford. Obviously, a book of this nature cannot fully answer all questions that might arise in every area it addresses; this one, however, goes a long way toward providing the relevant information that most readers will need to make knowledgeable decisions on their own. --Howard Rothman [via]
