In recent years, Bayes and empirical Bayes (EB) methods have continued to increase in popularity and impact. Building on the first edition of their popular text, Carlin and Louis introduce these methods, demonstrate their usefulness in challenging applied settings, and show how they can be implemented using modern Markov chain Monte Carlo (MCMC) methods. Their presentation is accessible to those new to Bayes and empirical Bayes methods, while providing in-depth coverage valuable to seasoned practitioners.
With its broad appeal as a text for those in biomedical science, education, social science, agriculture, and engineering, this second edition offers a relatively gentle and comprehensive introduction for students and practitioners already familiar with more traditional frequentist statistical methods. Focusing on practical tools for data analysis, the book shows how properly structured Bayes and EB procedures typically have good frequentist and Bayesian performance, both in theory and in practice. Incorporating new and updated information, this second edition of THE bestselling text in Bayesian data analysis continues to emphasize practice over theory, describing how to conceptualize, perform, and critique statistical analyses from a Bayesian perspective. Its world-class authors provide guidance on all aspects of Bayesian data analysis and include examples of real statistical analyses, based on their own research, that demonstrate how to solve complicated problems. Changes in the new edition include:
Bayesian computation is currently at a stage where there are many reasonable ways to compute any given posterior distribution. However, the best approach is not always clear ahead of time. Reflecting this, the new edition offers a more pluralistic presentation, giving advice on performing computations from many perspectives while making clear the importance of being aware that there are different ways to implement any given iterative simulation computation. The new approach, additional examples, and updated information make Bayesian Data Analysis an excellent introductory text and a reference that working scientists will use throughout their professional life.

Common Statistical Methods for Clinical Research with SAS Examples, Second Edition, written by Glenn Walker, provides clinical researchers with an invaluable aid for understanding the statistical methods cited most frequently in clinical protocols, statistical analysis plans, clinical and statistical reports, and medical journals. The text is written in a way that takes the non-statistician through each test using examples, yet substantive details are presented that benefit even the most experienced data analyst. Introductory chapters provide elementary statistical concepts as applied to clinical trials and an overview of statistical inference, including discussions about power, calculating sample size, p-values, and the logic behind hypothesis testing. The statistical methods discussed here represent a composite of methods most commonly used in the analysis of clinical research data. Numerous examples taken from clinical research show how to calculate statistical data both manually and using SAS. This revised edition includes sections about crossover designs and multiple comparison methods, a discussion of interim analyses, 50% more examples, and reader exercises. Extensions of methods previously presented only in their most elementary form are shown in new examples. [via]

If the prescriptions for getting rich that are outlined in books such as The Millionaire Next Door and Rich Dad Poor Dad are successful enough to make the books bestsellers, then one must ask, Why aren't there more millionaires? In Fooled by Randomness, Nassim Nicholas Taleb, a professional trader and mathematics professor, examines what randomness means in business and in life and why human beings are so prone to mistake dumb luck for consummate skill. This eccentric and highly personal exploration of the nature of randomness meanders from the court of Croesus and trading rooms in New York and London to Russian roulette, Monte Carlo engines, and the philosophy of Karl Popper. Part of what makes this book so good is Taleb's ability to make seemingly arcane mathematical concepts (at least to this reviewer) entirely relevant in evaluating and understanding everything from the stock market to the success of those millionaires cited in the aforementioned bestsellers. Here's an articulate, wise, and humorous meditation on the nature of success and failure that anyone who wants a little more of the former would do well to consider. Highly recommended. --Harry C. Edwards [via]

Texas Hold em is not an easy game to play well. To become an expert you must balance many concepts, some of which occasionally contradict each other. In 1988, the first edition appeared. Many ideas, which were only known to a small, select group of players, were made available to anyone who was striving to become an expert, and the hold em explosion had begun. It is now a new century, and the authors have again moved the state of the art forward by adding over 100 pages of new material, including extensive sections on "loose games," and "short-handed games." Anyone who studies this text, is well disciplined, and gets the proper experience should become a significant winner. Some of the other ideas discussed include play on the first two cards, semi-bluffing, the free card, inducing bluffs, staying with a draw, playing when a pair flops, playing trash hands, desperation bets, playing in wild games, reading hands, and psychology. Books on regression and the analysis of variance abound-many are introductory, many are theoretical. While most of them do serve a purpose, the fact remains that data analysis cannot be properly learned without actually doing it, and this means using a statistical software package. There are many of these to choose from as well, all with their particular strengths and weaknesses. Lately, however, one such package has begun to rise above the others thanks to its free availability, its versatility as a programming language, and its interactivity. That software is R.
In the first book that directly uses R to teach data analysis, Linear Models with R focuses on the practice of regression and analysis of variance. It clearly demonstrates the different methods available and more importantly, in which situations each one applies. It covers all of the standard topics, from the basics of estimation to missing data, factorial designs, and block designs, but it also includes discussion on topics, such as model uncertainty, rarely addressed in books of this type. The presentation incorporates an abundance of examples that clarify both the use of each technique and the conclusions one can draw from the results. All of the data sets used in the book are available for download from http://www.stat.lsa.umich.edu/~faraway/LMR/.
The author assumes that readers know the essentials of statistical inference and have a basic knowledge of data analysis, linear algebra, and calculus. The treatment reflects his view of statistical theory and his belief that qualitative statistical concepts, while somewhat more difficult to learn, are just as important because they enable us to practice statistics rather than just talk about it. In the late 1970s and early 1980s, the bond an option markets were dominated by traders who had learned their craft by experience. They believed that there experience and intuition for trading were a renewable edge; this is, that they could make money just as they always had by continuing to trade as they always had. By the mid-1990s, a revolution in trading had occurred; the old school grizzled traders had been replaced by a new breed of quantitative analysts, applying mathematics to the "art" of trading and making of it a science. Similarly in poker, for decades, the highest level of pokers have been dominated by players who have learned the game by playing it, "road gamblers" who have cultivated intuition for the game and are adept at reading other players' hands from betting patterns and physical tells. Over the last five to ten years, a whole new breed has risen to prominence within the poker community. Applying the tools of computer science and mathematics to poker and sharing the information across the Internet, these players have challenged many of the assumptions that underlie traditional approaches to the game. One of the most important features of this new approach is a reliance on quantitative analysis and the application of mathematics to the game. The intent of this book is to provide an introduction to quantitative techniques as applied to poker and to a branch of mathematics that is particularly applicable to poker, game theory. There are mathematical techniques that can be applied for poker that are difficult and complex. But most of the mathematics of poker is really not terribly difficult, and the authors have sought to make seemingly difficult topics accessible to players without a very strong mathematical background. Presenting a thorough and accessible treatment of generalized linear mixed models, also known as multilevel or hierarchical models, Multilevel and Longitudinal Modeling Using Stata explains the models and their assumptions, applies methods to real data using Stata, and shows how to interpret the results.
Beginning with the comparatively simple random-intercept linear model without covariates, the text develops the mixed model from first principles, familiarizing the reader with terminology, summarizing and relating the widely used estimating strategies, and providing historical perspective. Once this mixed-model foundation has been established, the text smoothly transitions to random-intercept models with covariates and then to random-coefficient models. The middle chapters apply the concepts defined earlier for Gaussian models to models for binary responses (e.g., logit and probit), ordinal responses (e.g., ordered logit and ordered probit), and count responses (e.g., Poisson). Models with multiple levels of random variation are then considered, as well as models with crossed (nonnested) random effects.
The most complete and up-to-date depiction of Statas capacity for fitting generalized linear mixed models, Multilevel and Longitudinal Modeling Using Stata serves as an ideal introduction for Stata users wishing to learn about this powerful data-analysis tool. [via]

Critics of the church growth movement have often emphasized the need for quality congregations. We should not focus on numerical growth, but rather, we should concentrate on qualitative growth.
Christian Schwarz has done extensive research world-wide and found that healthy, growing churches seem to share eight quality characteristics. These characteristics are:
Empowering leadership
Gift-oriented ministry
Passionate spirituality
Functional structures
Inspiring worship service
Holistic small groups
Need-oriented evangelism
Loving relationships
Schwarz uses the illustration of a barrel with eight staves to symbolize the eight quality characteristics. The barrel can only hold water to the height of the lowest stave. So too, Schwarz argues, a church can only grow as far as their 'Minimum factor,' which is the lowest of the eight quality characteristics in their church. He challenges churches to resist the temptation to work on improving areas in which they already excel, for by doing this they do not increase their minimum factor or their church quality.
This revised version of Natural Church Development now includes Schwarz's "3 Colors" teaching. [via]

Although regression models for categorical dependent variables are common, few texts explain how to interpret such models. Regression Models for Categorical Dependent Variables Using Stata, Second Edition, fills this void, showing how to fit and interpret regression models for categorical data with Stata. The authors also provide a suite of commands for hypothesis testing and model diagnostics to accompany the book.
The book begins with an excellent introduction to Stata and then provides a general treatment of estimation, testing, fit, and interpretation in this class of models. It covers in detail binary, ordinal, nominal, and count outcomes in separate chapters. The final chapter discusses how to fit and interpret models with special characteristics, such as ordinal and nominal independent variables, interaction, and nonlinear terms. One appendix discusses the syntax of the author-written commands, and a second gives details of the datasets used by the authors in the book.
Nearly 50% longer than the previous edition, the book covers new topics for fitting and interpreting models included in Stata 9, such as multinomial probit models, the stereotype logistic model, and zero-truncated count models. Many of the interpretation techniques have been updated to include interval as well as point estimates.

This extraordinary, massive, and mind-boggling 1,300-page book combines essays, manifestos, diaries, fairy tales, travelogues, a cycle of meditations on the contemporary city--and complex illustration--with work produced by Koolhaas' Office for Metropolitan Architecture over the past twenty years. This almost overwhelming accumulation of words and images illuminates the condition of architecture today--its splendors and miseries--exploring and revealing the corrosive effects of politics, context, the economy, and globalization. In some ways, this is the "Medium is the Message" of 1990s architectural discourse: guaranteed to be hugely influential in the coming decades, but grossly misunderstood by those who have not read it. The core arguments it makes about metropolitan architecture--accepting complexity and lack of centralized control--are similar to those of Kevin Kelly's Out of Control: The New Biology of Machines, Social Systems and the Economic World. Very highly recommended. [via]

The use of appropriate statistical methods is essential when working with environmental data. Yet, many environmental professionals are not statisticians. A ready reference guide to the most common methods used in environmental applications, Statistics for Environmental Science and Management introduces the statistical methods most frequently used by environmental scientists, managers, and students.
Using a non-mathematical approach, the author describes techniques such as: environmental monitoring, impact assessment, assessing site reclamation, censored data, and Monte Carlo risk assessment, as well as the key topics of time series and spatial data. The book shows the strengths of different types of conclusions available from statistical analyses. It contains internet sources of information that give readers access to the latest information on specific topics.
The author's easy to understand style makes the subject matter accessible to anyone with a rudimentary knowledge of the basics of statistics while emphasizing how the techniques are applied in the environmental field. Clearly and copiously illustrated with line drawings and tables, Statistics for Environmental Science and Management covers all the statistical methods used with environmental applications and is suitable as a text for graduate students in the environmental science area. Once again, the irrepressible Bill James has gone deep into the numbers and come up with a volume that will strain your bank book, inflame your hernia--and, if you really love baseball--offer countless hours of delight and debate. The enormous companion to STATS All-Time Major League Handbook, the Sourcebook slides into corners that the 2,500-plus-page Handbook somehow overlooked.
There are complete rosters and player stats for every major-league team since 1876, year-by-year league and team-leader boards in hitting and pitching, and career- and team-leader hitting and pitching stats. Though James and company manage to push the statistical limits, the real fun of the Sourcebook begins on page 1,524, with complete box scores for every postseason game ever played. Want more? All-Star game boxes begin on page 2,326; year-by-year Hall of Fame balloting on page 2,374 (down to journeymen who managed only to eke out a single vote); complete Most Valuable Player, rookie of the year, and Cy Young Award voting on page 2,411; a set of STATS-imposed retroactive annual all-star teams (page 2,450) culminating in an all-time all-star team that should flare a few tempers; and, most fun of all, box scores for more than 150 great games, with the authors' explanations of why each is notable, on page 2,470. These, of course, cry out for debate--if not all-out thermonuclear war--as well.
If your pulse isn't jangling yet, the Sourcebook may be an extravagance that will only bow your bookshelves and break your back. But if your heart is racing, you're probably halfway out the door already, off to the bank in search of a small loan. --Jeff Silverman [via]

Examples are given throughout the text, in order to motivate and illustrate the theory and show its importance for many applications in e.g. economics, biology and physics. The basic idea of the presentation is to start from some basic results without proofs of the easier cases and develop the theory from there, and to concentrate on the proofs of the easier case which nevertheless are often sufficiently general for many purposes in order to be able to reach quickly the parts of the theory which is most important for the applications. For the 6th edition the author has added further exercises and, for the first time, solutions to many of the exercises are provided. Ever wanted a chair that converts into a rowing machine? Sunglasses that serve as a wallet? A car with a sundeck so you can work on your tan on those long road trips? Well, inventor and illustrator Steven Johnson has designed these marvels and many, many more, spurred on by a truly insatiable imagination. His wacky, wonderful concepts could very well change the world-that is, if someone was ever bold enough to build them. From clothing to dining technology, home furnishings to appliances, and gardening gadgets to survival gear, WHAT THE WORLD NEEDS NOW is a sourcebook of revolutionary designs that prove how far our techno-culture has yet to go. Ģ Includes a three-step plan for inventing useful and useless things. [via]

--J. Schüring [via]
