The purpose of this edition is to demonstrate the quality and interest of book VI: the intellectual curiosity of the analyst of earthquakes, volcanoes and marvellous phenomena, the rhetorical and philosophical powers of a thinker who wants to make his interpretation of Epicureanism both cogent and vivid, the deep humane compassion of the chronicler of the Plague at Athens, the sheer brilliance of the poet whose verse inspired all later writers in the tradition. This edition of the book is designed to make the poem accessible to readers who have not picked up Lucretius before and so the background has been treated as fully as possible in. "Simple, unpretentious narrative makes this volume an accessible and inviting source for nonspecialists. Its many photographs enhance the appeal of the book and provide the faces referred to in the title. Throughout the volume, framed insets open up the text to provide an occasional 'window' for a statistical table, a biographical sketch, or to give voice to a first-person narrative that humanizes the text."

› Find signed collectible books: 'Farewell to Reason'
This new book by Paul Feyerbrand offers a vigorous challenge to the scientific rationalism the underlies Western ideals of 'progress' and 'development', whose damaging sociological and ecological consequences are now widely recognized. For all their variety of theme and occasion, the essays in Farewell to Reason share a consistent philosophical purpose. Whether discussing Greek art and thought, vindicating the Church's battle with Galileo, exploring the development of quantum physics or exposing the dogmatism of Karl Popper, Feyerbend defends a relativist and historical notion of the sciences. The appeal to reason, he insists, is empty, and must be replaced by a notion of science that subordinates it to the needs of citizens and communities. Provocative, polemical and rigorously argued, Farewell to Reason will infuriate Feyerbend's critics and delight his many admirers. [via]

› Find signed collectible books: 'Open Veins of Latin America: Five Centuries of the Pillage of a Continent'
Since its U.S. debut in 1973, this brilliant text has set a new standard for historical scholarship of Latin America. It is also an outstanding political economy, a social and cultural narrative of the highest quality, and perhaps the finest description of primitive capital accumulation since Marx.
Rather than chronology, geography, or political successions, Eduardo Galeano has organized the various facets of Latin American history according to the patterns of five centuries of exploitation. Thus he is concerned with gold and silver, cacao and cotton, rubber and coffee, fruit, hides and wool, petroleum, iron, nickel, manganese, copper, aluminum ore, nitrates, and tin. These are the veins which he traces through the body of the entire continent, up to the Rio Grande and throughout the Caribbean, and all the way to their open ends where they empty into the coffers of wealth in the United States and Europe.
Weaving fact and imagery into a rich tapestry, Galeano fuses scientific analysis with the passions of a plundered and suffering people. An immense gathering of materials is framed with a vigorous style that never falters in its command of themes. All readers interested in great historical, economic, political, and social writing will find a singular analytical achievement, and an overwhelming narrative that makes history speak, unforgettably.
This classic is now further honored by Isabel Allende's inspiring introduction. Universally recognized as one of the most important writers of our time, Allende once again contributes her talents to literature, to political principles, and to enlightenment.

This text sketches a critical account of the location of black intellectuals in the modern world following the end of racial slavery. The book explores the reactions of black writers to modernity's colour-coded promises, demonstrating the value of a politicized post-modernism in re-reading black cultural politics and political culture. The lives and writings of key African Americans such as Martin Delany, W.E.B. Dubois, Frederick Douglas and Richard Wright are examined in the light of their experiences outside the US in Europe and Africa. Gilroy provides an extensive discussion of black vernacular cultures, especially music. Moving beyond debates about modernity that confine it to Europe, "Promised Lands" views the black Atlantic as a transnational alternative to black political theory based, often by default, on conceptions of the nation imported from European letters. The black Atlantic is a hetero-cultural formation in which routes count for as much as roots and travelling and displacement are more usual than permanent fixity. This text should be of interest to students and teachers of English Cultural Studies and African and American Studies, as Gilroy presents a thorough indictment of their institutionalized ethnocentrism and inability to see beyond the structures of cultural nationalism and the borders of the nation state. Because it made possible rapid movement and shipping across large distances, joining far-off towns to economic and cultural capitals, many people who lived in the early 19th century regarded the railroad as an instrument of progress. Because anyone with the price of a ticket could board a train, regardless of social class, the railroad was also seen as a democratizing technology.
But, Wolfgang Schivelbusch notes in this vivid history of early rail travel, the promise of progress and democracy was swiftly compromised. The railroads became an agency for the concentration of wealth in a few hands, and they created a class of passive consumers who simply got aboard and waited to arrive at their destinations. The railroads, Schivelbusch writes, changed the 19th-century world for good and ill. They helped rewrite the industrializing world's sense of time, for now precise schedules had to be kept; they reinforced a sense of forward-plunging movement into the future; they even introduced the reality of mass disaster, for railroads were always crashing, sometimes taking hundreds of riders to their deaths.
Delving into urban planning, psychology, architecture, and economics, as well as the history of technology, Schivelbusch paints a revealing portrait of the role of the railroad in shaping the 19th-century mind. --Gregory McNamee [via]

In this groundbreaking critique of both traditional and Marxist notions of feudalism and of the precapitalist state, John Haldon considers the configuration of state and social relations in medieval Europe and Mughal India as well as in Byzantium and the Ottoman Empire. He argues that a Marxist account of the precapitalist state can take account of the autonomy of power relations and avoid economic reductionism while still focusing on the forms of tribute which sustained the ruling power. Haldon explores the conflicts to which these gave rise and to show the Ottoman state elite, often held to be a clear example of independence from underlying social relations, to be deeply enmeshed in economic relation-ships and the exaction of tribute. Haldon argues that feudalism was the specifically European form of a much more widely diffused tributary mode, whose characteristic social relations and structural constraints can be seen at work in the Byzantine, Ottoman and Mughal empires as well. While acknowledging the range of ideological and cultural variation within and between these examples of the tributary mode, Haldon denies the thesis that such 'superstructural' variations themselves yielded fundamentally contrasting social relations. "The idea that man has no nature," Malson begins, "is now beyond dispute. He has or rather is a history." In these provocative words, which form the theme of this essay, Malson carries one step further the assumption of behaviorists, structural functionalists, cultural anthropologists, and evolutionists that "human nature" is a constant. If the content of the analysis made by anthropologists is not affected by a "human nature" that lies outside of history, humanity to all effects and purposes becomes its history. So-called wolf children are children abandoned at an early age and found leading an isolated existence. They are thus natural examples of complete social deprivation and Malson explores their history in this complete study. His essay is followed by Itard's account of Victor, a wolf child found in the forests of central France at the end of the eighteenth century. Itard's two reports have become a classic of psychological and educational literature, and are presented here as the most important first-hand account of a wolf child. [via]
