From the MacArthur and Whiting Awardwinning author of John Henry Days and The Intuitionist comes a new, brisk, comic tour de force about identity, history, and the adhesive bandage industry
When the citizens of Winthrop needed a new name for their town, they did what anyone would dothey hired a consultant.
The protagonist of Apex Hides the Hurt is a nomenclature consultant. If you want just the right name for your new product, whether it be automobile or antidepressant, sneaker or spoon, hes the man to get the job done. Wardrobe lack pizzazz? Come to the Outfit Outlet. Always the wallflower at social gatherings? Try Loquacia.
And of course, whenever you take a fall, reach for Apex, because Apex Hides the Hurt. Apex is his crowning achievement, the multicultural bandage that has revolutionized the adhesive bandage industry. Flesh-colored be damnedno matter what your skin tone isApex will match it, or your money back.
After leaving his job (following a mysterious misfortune), his expertise is called upon by the town of Winthrop. Once there, he meets the town council, who will try to sway his opinion over the coming days.
Lucky Aberdeen, the millionaire software pioneer and hometown-boy-made-good, wants the name changed to something that will reflect the towns capitalist aspirations, attracting new businesses and revitalizing the community. Who could argue with that?
Albie Winthrop, beloved son of the towns aristocracy, thinks Winthrop is a perfectly good name, and cant imagine what the fuss is about.
Regina Goode, the mayor, is a descendent of the black settlers who founded the town, and has her own secret agenda for what the name should be.
Our expert must decide the outcome, with all its implications for the towns future. Which name will he choose? Or perhaps he will devise his own? And whats with his limp, anyway?
Apex Hides the Hurt brilliantly and wryly satirizes our contemporary culture, where memory and history are subsumed by the tides of marketing. [via]

In 1913 a young second lieutenant discovers the terrible dangers of pity. He had no idea the girl was lame when he asked her to dance - his compensatory afternoon calls relieve his guilt but give her a dangerous glimmer of hope. Stefan Zweig's only novel is a devastatingly unindulgent realization of the torment of the betrayal of both honor and love, realized against the background of the disintegration of the Austro-Hungarian Empire.
Stefan Zweig was born in 1881 into a wealthy Viennese Jewish family. He studied at the Universities of Berlin and Vienna and was first known as a poet and translator, then as a biographer. Zweig traveled widely, living in Salzburg, London and New York before settling in Brazil where he and his wife were found dead in 1942.

There are two new themes to medical education today: the integration of the basic and clinical sciences and the use of case histories and problem solving to encourage active learning. This is the first genetics text for medical students to incorporate these major changes. Based on the Harvard New Pathways model, this book integrates molecular and clinical genetics, organized around case histories and didactic text, which covers the basic principles of today's genetics. Each case history is explored from three points of view: classical genetic, molecular genetic, and clinical. Each chapter ends with a clinical problem which will illustrate and emphasize the points already learnt. The book progresses from simple to more complex concepts emphasizing important principles and setting groundwork for application of molecular and clinical genetics to the everyday practice of medicine. Lia Lee was born in 1981 to a family of recent Hmong immigrants, and soon developed symptoms of epilepsy. By 1988 she was living at home but was brain dead after a tragic cycle of misunderstanding, overmedication, and culture clash: "What the doctors viewed as clinical efficiency the Hmong viewed as frosty arrogance." The Spirit Catches You and You Fall Down is a tragedy of Shakespearean dimensions, written with the deepest of human feeling. Sherwin Nuland said of the account, "There are no villains in Fadiman's tale, just as there are no heroes. People are presented as she saw them, in their humility and their frailty--and their nobility." [via]

In 1945, near the end of World War II, Antal Szerb, the author of The Traveler, was executed along with 2000 other Hungarian Jews during a forced march westward. Three years later the New York Jewish Refugee Aid Society erected a memorial in the Hungarian town of Balf where the executions had taken place. Part of the memorial is an open book, engraved in stone, bearing the following Antal Szerb quote: "Freedom is the concern not only of one nation but of all mankind." In 1995, on the 50th anniversary date of Szerb's execution, Peter Hargitai, The Traveler's American translator, and his students at Florida International University had the name of Antal Szerb inscribed into the memorial wall of the Holocaust Memorial in the city of Miami Beach.

Homero (Siglo IX a.C. - Sigl)
Poeta griego. [via]

A spellbinding tale of disparate yearnings for love, art, power and God. Following years of lonely political exile in Germany, Ka, a middle-aged poet, returns to Istanbul to attend his mothers funeral. Strange news of a wave of suicides lead him to Kars, a remote Turkish town where political Islamism threaten to unravel the secular order. Pamuk creates a stark picture of a too-little known part of the world, illuminating the contradictions gripping the individual and collective heart in many parts of the Muslim world.
