Most of what I really need to know about how to live and what to do and how to be I learned in kindergarten. Wisdom was not at the top of the graduate school mountain, but there in the sandpile at Sunday School. These are the things I learned:
Share everything.
Play fair.
Don't hit people.
Put things back where you found them.
Clean up your own mess.
Don't take things that aren't yours.
Say you're sorry when you hurt somebody.
Wash your hands before you eat.
Flush.
Warm cookies and cold milk are good for you.
Live a balanced life.
Take a nap every afternoon.
When you go out into the world, watch out for traffic, hold hands, and stick together. [via]

"There's a . . . detachment that happens as a physician when you're dealing with frightening, horrifying, or sad events that you maintain an objectivity that's required, and I do that also when I write." When so many tales of the dark fantastic are told as if with exclamation marks, Dr. Michael Blumlein's sonorous, objective voice is refreshingly chilly. This collection of 12 elegantly crafted stories (first published in 1990) displays a range of subject matter defying categorization as science fiction, horror, or fantasy. The title story, nominated for a World Fantasy Award, is a provocative thought experiment about gender identity. Other topics include radical surgery with political intent, a child's flight into another realm, a technopunk romance, and various surreal excursions into minds obsessed with family secrets, hauntings, madness, poverty. The first one-volume edition of the short stories of H.G.Wells - a total of 84 stories by one of the Great masters of the genre. Herbert George Wells - author of The Time Machine and the war of the worlds - was on of the founding-fathers of modern science fiction. But in his short stories, written when he was a young man embarking on a literary career, that he first explored the enormous potential of the scientific discoveries of his day. He described his stories as ' a miscellany of inventions ', yet his enthusiasm for science is tempered by an awareness of it's horrifying destructive power and the threat it could pose to the whole human race. A consummate story teller, he makes fantastical creatures and machines entirely believable; and by placing ordinary men and women in extroadinary situations he humorously explores what it means to be alive in a century of rapid scientific progress. At the close of the millennium, in the age of Dolly the sheep, Wells fin de Siecle vision is more pertinent than ever before. [via]

He revolutionized the horror tale, giving it psychological insight and a consistent tone and atmosphere; he invented the modern detective story; he wrote some of the world's best-known lyric poetry and a major novella of the fantastic; he impressed such writers as Baudelaire, Mallarme and Borges. If it's been a while since you read any Edgar A. Poe (he never used "Allan"), you've probably forgotten how terrific he is. And some of his best work is in his lesser-known stories, such as "The Imp of the Perverse" and "A Descent into the Maelstrom." In short, what are you waiting for? [via]

"Fritz Leiber has a wicked imagination. Wicked enough to make us laugh at an impossible future containing nightmarish aspects of our own times." Edmond Cooper, Sunday Times Drawing themes from Shakespeare, Edgar Allen Poe, and H.P Lovecraft, master manipulator Fritz Leiber is a worldwide legend within the fantasy genre, actually coining the term "Sword and Sorcery" that describes the sub-genre he helped create. Before Lord of the Rings took the world by storm, Leiber's fantastic but thoroughly flawed anti-heroes, Fafhrd and Gray Mouser, adventured and stumbled deep within the caves of Inner Earth as well, albeit a different one. They wondered and wandered to the edges of the Outer Sea, across the Land of Nehwon and throughout every nook and cranny of gothic Lankhmar, Nehwon's grandest and most mystically corrupt city. Lankhmar is Leiber's fully realized vivid incarnation of urban decay and civilization's corroding effect on the human psyche. Fafhrd and Mouse are not innocents; their world is no land of honor and righteousness. It is a world of human complexities and violent action, of discovery and mystery, of swords and sorcery. Swords in the Mist, book three in the Lankhmar series, thrusts our indentured sword-swinging servants into the question of hate, its power and its purpose. You see, it happens to be lean times in Lankhmar, illuminating that link between money and love. Luckily, Fafhrd and the Gray Mouser don't always believe in love. When Lankhmar gets too gritty, our travelers take to their other, less harsh mistress, the Sea. But the Sea can play tricks on men, and so can the Sea King. He can break a man or worse yet, curse him. But when he's away it's all play for the formidable swordsmen and the Triple Goddess-and two luscious sea queens. But luck may not always be there as they discover on the way to Ningauble, their wizard employer. After a long journey in defense of their control over their own fates, Fafhrd and the Gray Mouse find themselves pawns in a life and death chess game, all of Lankhmar being the pieces. How many pawns will be left on the board before someone wins? [via]

This groundbreaking collection brings together 28 stunning stories by literary talents never before assembled in a single volume. With contributions from both established and bright new voices in lesbian fiction, "Women on Women" ranges from the subtlety and restraint of Willa Cather's "Tommy, the Unsentimental" to Sapphire's daring and highly erotic "Eat" and Valerie Miner's suspenseful "Trespassing." Some of the stories are universal in theme - the joy and excitement of new romance, the ageless problems of family life, and the pain of lost love and of death. And many are written by or about members of racial, ethnic, and other minorities within the gay community. These are stories that offer stirring, eloquent, often passionate insights into the lesbian experience in a long-overdue collection that represents the best of lesbian short fiction from past to present.
