The Living Principle is among the most philosophical of F.R. Leavis's books, a defense of the study of literature as an autonomous discipline involving intellectual rigor of the highest sort. Constant references to the Cambridge University of Leavis's time may make the book seem parochial and dated, but the central premises are still relevant. What has changed? Only that, if Leavis were alive today, he would be defending literature against English departments' trendy intellectual fashions rather than the sneers of philosophers.
Fully a third of The Living Principle is devoted to Leavis's brilliant and irascible engagement with T.S. Eliot's Four Quartets. Other gems include his analysis of exactly why John Dryden's description of Cleopatra in All for Love is so pedestrian next to Shakespeare's in Anthony and Cleopatra. It's a treat to read someone who can talk intelligently about Blake or Dickens in one paragraph, and about Russell or Wittgenstein in the next--without being awed by any of them. --Richard Farr [via]

The greatest love poetry in the English language provides the springboard for master playwrights' never-before-published works about the triumphs and tragedies of the heart.
The sonnets and plays in Loves' Fire are the seeds and fruit of an extraordinary project: seven sonnets by Shakespeare, newly envisioned for the stage, in one-act plays by seven brilliantly gifted contemporary playwrights.
Shakespeare's sonnets of romantic and sexual love are timeless, for they are not bound to any particular setting or to either sex. These seven plays, each paired with the sonnet that inspired it, are startling not only in the variety of their mood, content, and setting, but also in their unusual interpretation. For example, Wendy Wasserstein's version of Sonnet 94 is a one-act play set in the Hamptons, where a well-to-do couple is getting ready for a society benefit; Eric Bogosian creates a story of sexual jealousy and obsessiveness from Sonnet 118; and composer William Finn has transformed Sonnet 102 into a song about an artist attempting to paint his lover -- and failing. These seven new works, commissioned and produced by the Acting Company, will be performed in June. Brought together in this slender volume with the sonnets, they form a unique tribute to Shakespeare -- a rich and marvelously entertaining celebration of the modern playwrights' adoration of the Bard. This is undoubtedly the greatest love story ever written, spawning a host of imitators on stage and screen, including Leonard Bernstein's smash musical West Side Story, Franco Zeffirelli's Romeo and Juliet filmed in 1968, and Baz Luhrmann's postmodern film version Romeo + Juliet. The tragic feud between "Two households, both alike in dignity/In fair Verona", the Montagues and Capulets, which ultimately kills the two young "star-crossed lovers" and their "death-marked love" creates issues which have fascinated subsequent generations. The play deals with issues of intergenerational and familial conflict, as well as the power of language and the compelling relationship between sex and death, all of which makes it an incredibly modern play. It is also an early example of Shakespeare fusing poetry with dramatic action, as he moves from Romeo's lyrical account of Juliet--"she doth teach the torches to burn bright!" to the bustle and action of a 16th-century household (the play contains more scenes of ordinary working people than any of Shakespeare's other works). It also represents an experimental attempt to fuse comedy with tragedy. Up to the third act, the play proceeds along the lines of a classic romantic comedy. The turning point comes with the death of one of Shakespeare's finest early dramatic creations--Romeo's sexually ambivalent friend Mercutio, whose "plague o' both your houses" begins the play's descent into tragedy, "For never was a story of more woe/Than this of Juliet and her Romeo". --Jerry Brotton [via]

This volume contains translations, into contemporary English, of novellas by Salernitano, Da Porto, Bandello, and Boaistuau that were forerunners to Shakespeare's Romeo and Juliet. These translations are preceded by an introduction that traces the evolution of the tale of the two Veronese lovers. Tommaso Guardati (circa 1410-1475), more commonly known as Masuccio Salernitano, wrote the Novellino, a collection of fifty short stories, under the patronage of Roberto Sanseverino, prince of Salerno, which was published posthumously in 1476. Luigi Da Porto (1485-1529), a soldier in the Venetian army and friend of the literary theorist and poet Pietro Bembo, is the author of letters valuable as historical documents, of poems, and of one novella. Matteo Bandello (1485-1561), born in Castelnuovo in Lombardy, abandoned the Dominican order in favour of court life that enabled him to write encomiastic poetry, Petrarchan verse, and his major literary work: a collection of 214 novellas from which Shakespeare derived Twelfth Night, Much Ado about Nothing, and Romeo and Juliet. Pierre Boaistuau (circa 1517-1566), born into the middle class of Nantes, is perhaps best known as the publisher of the first edition of the Heptaméron of Marguerite de Navarre as well as being the adapter, into French, of six Bandello novellas, published under the title Histoires tragiques. As a manager, you may secretly long for the odd head to roll, for the plans of potential usurpers to be spectacularly foiled, for your role as fearsome leader to be acknowledged and lauded by all. Melodramatic fantasies aside, however, the more conventional leader in you may also believe that the job of managing is for the eight-to-six daily grind and that Shakespearean drama is better left for the occasional evening at the theater. This, as Paul Corrigan tells us, is sorely underestimating the potential influence of the great Bard.
In Shakespeare on Management, Corrigan presents a number of Shakespeare's plays as lessons on leadership. Obviously, company leaders at the start of the 21st century deal with vastly different issues from those faced by the monarchs and warriors of the late 1600s and earlier. Corrigan begins his book, however, by emphasizing that while today's rapid pace of change creates an unpredictable environment for managers, a company in transition cannot achieve lasting success unless led by someone with exceptional leadership skills. The plays he examines are about the politics of leadership, and the intricacies involved in an individual's pursuit and execution of power and authority. Characters rise to great heights on the strength of their ambitions, but fall from grace on their lack of true leadership ability. Most of Shakespeare's plays deal with failure, but provide useful insights for managers intent on avoiding it. While Richard II points out the pitfalls of believing one's power stems solely from a title or position, King Lear demonstrates the disastrous results of not recognizing one's changing responsibilities. Richard III and Macbeth both portray the destructive capacity of ambition that is unchecked by a leader's morals or relationships. On a positive note, Henry V, Shakespeare's most heroic character, inspires leaders to develop the potential of their followers, to understand their individual skills and limitations fully, and to reward innovation.
Though managers with a passion for literature will enjoy this book, they don't have to love Shakespeare to learn the lessons. Corrigan draws clear, useful parallels between the plays' characters and the types of leaders that exist today. He doesn't attempt to eliminate the ambiguities often found in Shakespeare's complex characters, but instead offers up their strengths and weaknesses as descriptive signposts for the modern leader. --S. Ketchum [via]

Rebecca Reisert's mesmerizing first novel re-imagines "Macbeth, Shakespeare's classic tragedy of power and madness, through the eyes of a mysterious young woman on a dangerous quest for vengeance.
For the girl called Gilly, life in the wilds of Birnam Wood is little more than a desperate struggle for survival. Seven long years have passed since she was first taken in and sheltered by Nettle and Mad Helga, the hut-dwelling wise-women whose inscrutable powers of alchemy and prophecy are feared and reviled throughout good King Duncan's kingdom. Living under the threat of deadly persecution by witch-hunting villagers, the threesome ekes out a life by peddling potions and elixirs, scavenging for food, and robbing the bloodied corpses of Scotland's battle-scarred hills for precious metals and weapons.
But Gilly is haunted by recollections of a much brighter life. She clings to fading memories of a time when she was contented and adored -- until tragedy swept all that happiness away and young Gilly's life was changed forever.
"I have made my life an arrow, and His heart is my home. I have made my heart a blade, and His heart is my sheath....Obsessed with avenging her loss and putting out the fire that still rages in her heart, Gilly has dedicated herself to destroying Macbeth, the boundlessly ambitious man who took away her childhood, and his goading wife. Disguising herself as a poor servant boy, she insinuates herself into their lives and, as she bears horrified witness to Macbeth's violent path to power, Gilly subtly begins to take a hand in the forces governing his fate. But as the culmination of her revenge draws near, Gilly finds her own life at risk when she confrontsthe troubling legacy of a long-concealed heritage.
"The Third Witch is a brilliantly imagined, wonderfully satisfying novel. In a riveting story of ruthlessness and revenge, debut author Rebecca Reisert demonstrates a profound understanding of the Bard's timeless drama -- and of the real-life Macbeth upon whom Shakespeare's incarnation is modeled. One of Shakespeare's greatest, but also bloodiest tragedies, was written around 1605/06. Many have seen the story of Macbeth's murder and usurpation of the legitimate Scottish King Duncan as having obvious connection to contemporary issues regarding King James I (James VI of Scotland), and the Gunpowder Plot of 1605. King James was particularly fascinated with witchcraft, so the appearance of the witches chanting "Fair is foul, and foul is fair" at the opening of the play seemed particularly topical, as was Macbeth's betrayal of Banquo, from whom James claimed direct descent.
However, the play is clearly far more than a piece of royal entertainment. It is also a fast-moving and dramatically satisfying piece of theatre. Macbeth's existential struggle between loyalty to his King and his "Vaulting ambition" is fascinating to watch, as his is struggle with Lady Macbeth, and her own terrifying refusal of her maternal role. The play shows an intensification of Shakespeare's interest in mothers and their effect upon ruling masculinity, and also contains some of the most memorable speeches in the entire canon, including Macbeth's reflections that ultimately life "is a tale / Told by an idiot, full of sound and fury, / Signifying nothing". --Jerry Brotton [via]
