One of the great masters of 20th-century art, the Swiss sculptor Alberto Giacometti captured the existential loneliness of modern humanity with his spindly, attenuated figures whose life-like gazes pierce the vastness of space. Uniting more than 250 sculptures, paintings, drawings and graphic works, this extensive monograph is an exemplary overview of his oeuvre. The book underscores the continuity between the two remarkable bodies of work that characterize his career: the pre-1935 works, which included the finest of all Surrealist sculptures, and the post-war masterpieces. As a result of a profound artistic crisis that began in 1934, when Giacometti returned to working from the model and thus broke with the Surrealists, the artist began tackling the problem of situating figures in space in an entirely new way. Painting played a key role in the solutions that Giacometti found to this problem, and the discussion here of the relationship between his two- and three-dimensional works reveals him to have been as great a painter as he was a sculptor. Contributions by several notable art historians address contemporary research issues and offer a comprehensive record of Giacometti's life and work. Among the many photographs of the artist and his circle are images by such notable photographers as Henri Cartier-Bresson, Ugo Mulas and Man Ray. [via]

Australian-born art critic Robert Hughes, author of the highly acclaimed study of modern art, The Shock of the New has made his home in the United States for the last 20 years. His latest undertaking, which he calls "a love letter to America," is his most massive: a 350-year history of art in America. Published in association with an eight-part PBS series of the same name, this is no scholarly text. With the same voracious wit and opinionated brilliance that have characterized his criticism for Time magazine, this tour-de-force spans three centuries of events, movements, and personalities that have shaped American society and its art. The reproductions are outstanding; 323 out of 365 are in rich, vivid color. Infinitely entertaining and perceptive, this superb book makes readers feel as if they have discovered a truer, hidden America. It seems certain to become one of the most important works in the art-historical canon. [via]

› Find signed collectible books: 'Andy Goldsworthy: A Collaboration With Nature'
Scottish artist Andy Goldsworthy uses a seemingly infinite array of purely natural materials, from snow and ice to leaves, stone, and twigs in the creation of his one-of-a-kind sculptures. Unlike such artists as Christo and Michael Hiezer, whose works leave definite marks on the landscape, Goldsworthy's approach is to interrupt, shape, or in some other way temporarily alter or work with nature to produce his fragile, mutable pieces. To create "Broken Icicle," for example, Goldsworthy was only able to work on the sculpture in the early morning, when temperatures were below freezing. As with most of his works, ultimately, the materials used to create this piece returned to their natural state, leaving no trace of the artwork's existence save for the stunning photos in this book. This exhaustive look at a long century of art making and art questioning is, understandably, more broad than it is deep. A massive, boxed, two-volume set, it's divided into sections on painting, sculpture, new media (performance art, video art, earth art, etc.), and photography, with a 150-page biographical appendix of all of the 780 artists whose works are illustrated in the main sections of the book. The original German text, written by a team of writers and art historians, has been fluidly translated by John William Gabriel. The authors are very much of their own time and place: there are more works from after World War II than before it, and many more German artists--including mediocre and derivative ones--make the cut than if the book had been written by, say, an English or a French team. In fact, the English seem slightly shortchanged here. William Tucker, still a vital influence, is represented by a 1967 minimal sculpture and a four-word mention, and painter Howard Hodgkin is omitted entirely. And while American sculptor-entrepreneur Jeff Koons is given more than his due, the thoughtful and significant Rachel Whiteread is not mentioned at all. But Art of the Twentieth Century is an unquestionably useful reference guide to a period that swings dramatically from the impressionists all the way to Nam June Paik. [via]

The relationship between Camille Claudel and Auguste Rodin was one of the most artistically fruitful and passionate turn-of-the-century love affairs. When they first met in 1883, Rodin was forty-four and Claudel a promising sculptor of twenty. Despite the positive response of critics to her early work, Claudel, however, never experienced fame and success. The tragic circumstances of her life - the last thirty years were spent in a psychiatric hospital - have led to considerable speculation and interest in this enigmatic figure. To some she seemed to offer the classic example of a woman artist who was oppressed and abused by a successful man. This book examines Claudel's family background, her relationship to her parents and brother, and her behavior as documented by friends and family to determine to what extent her innate mental instability led to her eventual breakdown. What were the circumstances surrounding her commitment to an asylum and how did her family and Rodin react to her illness? Further, the author critically examines the relationship between the two artists: to what extent did they influence each other? How did Rodin really treat Claudel? Finally and most importantly, Claudel's oeuvre is investigated in terms of her biography and in relationship to her contemporaries in an attempt to evaluate her work as a sculptor and to understand the personal and artistic crisis she underwent after severing her relationship with Rodin. Between the ninth and the thirteenth centuries, the Chola dynasty was the dominant cultural, artistic, religious, and political force in southern India. Though relatively unknown in the West, Chola bronzes are widely considered to be not only among the very finest works of Indian sculptural art, but the finest examples of bronze casting ever created. Among the exquisite examples here are the Hindu gods Shiva, Vishnu, and Ganesh, and a portrayal of Krishna dancing on the serpent Kaliyaone of only two in existence. This sumptuous book includes essays exploring how and why these objects came to be made, and the role they played within Hinduism and Chola culture. [via]

The sequel to Katherine Dewey's popular book "Creating Life-Like Animals in Polymer Clay", this time she pulls out all the stops to teach both novice and accomplished sculptors alike just how she creates the realistic figures she has been renowned for over her 30 year professional career. If you aspire to be a figurative sculptor or already are one, this is a book you must have. In her no-nonsense, show-how-it's-done teaching style, Katherine shows with more than 400 full color photos, detailed illustrations, and step-by-step instructions how to do it all. Her modeling methods are not complicated. Rather than relying on classical "muscle on bone" physiology, she teaches how to sculpt exquisite figurines in any scale using her simple applique approach. Her book teaches anyone how to sculpt realistic human figures, but there is much more between the covers of this 144 page resource. From selecting your clays, to making your own modeling tools, to proportioning your figures, posing, ethnic and gender subtleties, facial expressions and posing, costumes in clay, to finishing touches, Katherine teaches it all. As one early bird reviewer put it: "It's like having a master sculptor right here with me step by step". [via]

In the spring of 1820, on the Aegean island of Melos, an unsuspecting farmer was digging for marble building blocks when he unearthed the statue that would come to be known as the Venus de Milo. From the moment of its discovery a battle for possession ensued and was won, eventually, by the French. Touted by her keepers in the Louvre as the great classical find of the era, the sculpture gained instant celebrityand yet its origins had yet to be documented or verified.
From the flurry of excitement surrounding her discovery, to the raging disputes over her authenticity, to the politics and personalities that have given rise to her mystique, Gregory Curtis has given us a riveting look at the embattled legacy of a beloved icon and a remarkable tribute to one of the worlds great works of art. A strange and compelling unkillable woman decides to leave home, and the story begins. Fleur Pillager takes her mother's name, Four Souls, for strength and walks from her Ojibwe reservation to the cities of Minneapolis and Saint Paul. She is seeking restitution from and revenge on the lumber baron who has stripped her reservation. But revenge is never simple, and she quickly finds her intentions complicated by her own dangerous compassion for the man who wronged her.
The two narrators of Four Souls are from utterly different worlds. Nanapush, a "smart man and a fool," is both Fleur's savior and her conscience. He tells Fleur's story and tells his own. He would like a calm and discriminating love with his sweetheart, Margaret. He is old and would like to face death with his love beside him. Instead the two find themselves battling out their last years. When the childhood nemesis of Nanapush appears and casts his eye toward Margaret, Nanapush acts out an absurd revenge of his own and nearly ends up destroying everything. The other narrator, Polly Elizabeth Gheen, is a pretentious and vulnerable upper-crust fringe element, a hanger-on in a wealthy Minneapolis family, a woman aware of her precarious hold on those around her. To her own great surprise the entrance of Fleur Pillager into her household and her life effects a transformation she could never have predicted.
In the world of interconnected novels by Louise Erdrich, Four Souls is most closely linked to Tracks. All these works continue and elaborate the intricate story of life on a reservation peopled by saints and false saints, heroes and sinners, clever fools and tenacious women. Four Souls reminds us of the deep spirituality and the ordinary humanity of this world, and is as beautiful and lyrical as anything Louise Erdrich has written.

From the Preface: It is my hope that through this book I can share with readers the excitement I feel in looking at sculpture all over the world. This is a general book on how to appreciate sculpture, not a lesson on any particular period or school or artist. It is not intended as a historic or comprehensive view of the art of sculpture, but rather as a collection of impressions and experiences accompanied by photographs that show what I have found in some of my own explorations. If readers will be inspired to look with a searching eye, think with a probing mind, and feel with a receptive heart, I know they will be enriched by what they see, and over a period of time the beautiful harmonies of forms they encounter will become part of their inner being. - David Finn [via]

A glance at this book's table of contents gives you an idea of its intentions: "Developing your own pace; Where to begin; Displays can dramatize--but don't let them fool you; There's no rule on how long it takes to appreciate a masterpiece." David Finn encourages museumgoers to rely on their own impressions. In the first sentence of the first chapter, he writes that there is "no right or wrong way to visit a museum." Finn gives a general overview of the layout of a museum and uses illustrations from museums around the world to present basic art history concepts and ways of looking at artwork. With practical information he encourages museum visitors to feel comfortable, confident, and develop their own sensibilities in a museum--instead of relying on someone else's. "Discrimination," Finn writes, "is a necessary component of appreciation." [via]

In 1996, internationally distinguished sculptor Richard Serra achieved an unparalleled technical and conceptual feat: the creation of forms never before seen in either art or architecture. "They are vessels that you walk into," said Serra of his 13-foot-high bent steel works, called Torqued Ellipses. Imagine standing within an oval-shaped space on the ground with high, curved walls simultaneously rising and seemingly rotating around you. From inside the Ellipses it seems that the walls continuously lean in or out in either direction, creating an unfamiliar and disorienting experience. The pieces were installed at the Geffen Contemporary at the Museum of Contemporary Art, Los Angeles, during the fall and winter of 1998-99. Richard Serra: Sculpture 1985-1998 is the comprehensive catalog to that show; it also documents more than a decade of Serra's output. A complement to the physical and visual weight of Serra's austere and massive steel sculptures, this handsome hardcover is printed on 240 pages of heavy gloss stock, amply illustrated with 271 plates. It includes strikingly composed black-and-white photographs and a number of insightful sketches and diagrams that should help even readers who haven't seen the pieces firsthand envisage their force.
In his introductory essay titled "The Un/Making of Sculpture," prominent art critic Hal Foster offers a series of notes inspired by Serra's 1976 response to the question "What does making sculpture mean to you right now?" Foster discusses Serra's engagement with historical precedents in art and architecture, his use of steel and the language of industrial production, and the dynamic he creates between his sculptures, their specific sites, and their viewers. Many of the plates are accompanied by Serra's own comments, which, in addition to a lengthy interview with David Sylvester, further elucidate his process and key concerns, making the depth and breadth of his work accessible to even first-time viewers. These informative texts, as well as an exhibition chronology and selected bibliography, make this book a standout. --A.C. Smith [via]

Whether measured in minutes or eons, time is a good friend of British artist Andy Goldsworthy's. He spends long, solitary days outdoors in all kinds of weather, doing things like piecing together many, many yellow leaves to create a brilliant band of color at a river's edge in upstate New York or stacking small pieces of ice on the Nova Scotia coast to build a sculpture in the compact shape of an ancient stone monument. Threatened by a strong gust of wind, the incoming tide, or a sudden rise in temperature, these are fugitive works comfortably in synch with the natural rhythms of growth and decay.
Other works of his are longer-lasting. In walls made of stacked stones with hollowed-out oval "chambers" the size of his body--which he began building in 1999 in Lancashire, England--Goldsworthy makes reference not only to the shapes of graves in a nearby church but also to his personal history in the region and the enduring qualities of a rugged landscape.
Goldsworthy is the rare artist who can describe what he does in simple, concrete terms that nonetheless reveal his larger vision. Time is a very satisfying collection of 500 photographs, nearly all taken by him, that document the creation and subsequent mutations of his work. These evocative images are illuminated by excerpts from the diaries he kept as he created five projects in Europe and North America in the '90s. He discusses what it's like to explore an unfamiliar landscape, assess how the elements will work for and against him, and perform what are essentially a set of experiments. Success means making work that is, as he writes, "completely welded to its site." --Cathy Curtis [via]

[via]
