"This must be the most lavish book on Art Deco ever published. It may even be the last word on the movement."-Artforum
"Victor Arwas's Art Deco is the most serious and comprehensive book on the subject. . . . The book itself is an object of striking elegance."-Newsweek
Victor Arwas's magnificent book offers a broad insight into the elements of this distinctive decorative style. Arwas discusses the work of Art Deco's leading French exponents-Ruhlmann, Puiforcat, Ert, Dunand, Fouquet, Cassandre, Boucheron, and Icart, to name but a few-as he traces the evolution of the style from its first appearance at the famed 1925 Exposition des Arts Dcoratifs et Industriels Modernes in Paris, from which it took its name.

Advertising Overview As the industrialization of the twentieth century gathered pace, the sensuous flowing lines of Art Nouveau gave way to the jagged rhythms of Art Deco. Rejecting the crafts ethic of the previous generation, the new style confidently celebrated the machine age with emphatic geometrical lines and shape, vibrant color schemes and the use of modern man-made materials such as plastic. Skyscraper deco, streamline style- its forms revealed in a headlong rush towards the future. Illustrated with over 100 color and black-and-white photographs, Art Deco provides a splendid visual record of the style of the interwar years. Art Deco, with its vibrant colors, geometric lines, and use of modern materials, was a welcome contrast to the over-blown ornamentalism of Art Nouveau. More than 180 color photos present the stunning simplicity of this movement.*****180+ color photos. [via]

'The best reason to study Hellenistic art is for its own sake' writes Professor Pollitt in the Preface to Art in the Hellenistic Age. 'But', he continues, 'I would suggest that there is an additional quality that should make the art of the Hellenistic age of particular interest to modern audiences: the fact that in background and content it was the product of an age in many ways similar to our own ... The result of the historical conditions (of the age) was an art which, like much modern art, was heterogenous, often cosmopolitan, increasingly individualistic, and frequently elite in its appeal'. This book is an interpretative history of Greek art during the Hellenistic period - i.e. from the death of Alexander the Great in 323 BC, to the establishment of the Roman Empire at the end of the first century BC - which also explores ways in which that art is an expression of the cultural experience and aspirations of the Hellenistic age. For more than 30 years, Dale Chihuly's work, principally in glass (but occasionally including such unconventional media as neon and ice), has challenged traditional distinctions between craft and art. Chihuly's oeuvre is notable for its vibrancy of color, the boldness of its shape and execution, and, in recent years, its studied mimicry of natural forms, from cacti to seaweed and jellyfish. The scale of these blown-glass works ranges from pieces suitable for a coffee table to vast hanging chandeliers that drape from ceiling to floor or shoot up like Christmas trees from below. At times, Chihuly's work is merely decorative, a collection of brightly colored, softened glass forms that resemble melted Christmas tree ornaments, sea anemones, squash, wriggling eels, and other organic shapes. The dizzying abundance of work created by Chihuly himself and his students-cum-assistants at his Pilchuk Glass School, and the enormously successful marketing of this art (Pilchuk, located near Seattle, is open to visitors), has lead some viewers to an overfamiliarity with the work. But art critics Donald Kuspit and Jack Cowart argue for its originality and importance in their introductory essays. (Perhaps overly so: Cowart compares the pieces to Matisse, Turner, and Walt Disney's Fantasia, while Kuspit evokes Freud, symbolism, and T.S. Eliot to argue for the works' seriousness of intent.) Even those readers familiar with Chihuly will be impressed with the capacious variety of form and function--candy bowls to chandeliers--captured in over 280 pages of photographs that exhaustively chart the artist's creations, along with the two essays mentioned above and a biographical time-line. For Chihuly fans who may not be able to afford a Chihuly original of their own, this book is the next best thing. --John Longenbaugh [via]

Claes Oldenburg has become one of America's most influential artists. His subject-matter is the everyday object - food, clothing and mechanical devices - which he reincarnates in provocative sculpture, drawings and performances. This comprehensive volume, published to accompany a retrospective exhibition of his works organized jointly by the National Gallery of Art, Washington, and the Guggenheim Museum, New York, spans Oldenburg's entire career, from his earliest work devoted to the street life of New York, to "The Store", an array of painted, plaster sculptures of food and clothing, and to his soft sculptures, drawings for fanciful monuments, and large-scale public projects made with Coosje van Bruggen. This book was produced with the assistance of Oldenburg, and contains a selection of his own writings, as well as many previously-unpublished photographs. [via]

After reading this book, I guarantee that you will never visit the Metropolitan Museum of Art (or any wonderful, old cavern of a museum) without sneaking into the bathrooms to look for Claudia and her brother Jamie. They're standing on the toilets, still, hiding until the museum closes and their adventure begins. Such is the impact of timeless novels . . . they never leave us. E. L. Konigsburg won the 1967 Newbery Medal for this tale of how Claudia and her brother run away to the museum in order to teach their parents a lesson. Little do they know that mystery awaits! [via]

For thousands of art lovers both amateur and professional, aesthetic life began with Janson, as H.W. Janson's History of Art is often called. In the first edition, published in 1962, Janson spoke to that perennial reader he gently called "the troubled layman." His opening paragraph revealed his sympathy: "Why is this supposed to be art?" he quoted rhetorically. "How often have we heard this question asked--or asked it ourselves, perhaps--in front of one of the strange, disquieting works that we are likely to find nowadays in the museum or art exhibition." Keeping that curious, questioning perspective in mind, he wrote a history of art from cave painting to Picasso that was singularly welcoming, illuminating, and exciting.
After H.W. Janson died, in 1982, his son, Anthony F. Janson, took over the daunting task of revising his father's book. Janson the elder would be thrilled with the beauty of this fifth edition, which tips the scales at more than seven pounds. Thanks to advances in printing, it teems with reproductions--736 in color and 500 black-and-white--that would have been far too costly 35 years ago. At an even 1,000 pages, it is an inch thicker than its 572-page progenitor.
Sojourning through this book, a reader is offered every amenity for a comfortable trip. Because Janson never assumes knowledge on the part of the reader, a recent immigrant from Mars could comprehend Western art from this text. The only assumption the Jansons have made is that with a little guidance everyone can come to understand the artifacts that centuries of architecture, sculpture, design, and painting have deposited in our paths. Countless readers have proven the Jansons right--and found their lives enriched in the process. [via]

Volume III, ranging from 1500 to the late-17th century, begins and ends with two outstanding personalities: Michelangelo and Bernini. Michelangelo forged a new and ideal style, the development of which is traced in the work of Andrea and Jacopo Sansovino, Benvenuto Cellini, Giambologna, Pietro Tacca, Leone Leoni, Alessandro Vittoria and others. The author also describes the artistic problems presented by the statue, relief, portrait, tomb and fountain in the 16th century, culminating in the dramatic innovations of Bernini which ushered in the Baroque style. This work is the only known autobiography of a Renaissance artist. It describes not only the artist's life at the Papal Court in Rome and at the Royal Court of France but makes very vivid historical writing, including, as it does, an eye-witness acount of the Sack of Rome in 1527. Cellini also gives us details of his career as a sculptor and goldsmith who restored Etruscan sculptures in Florence, made jewellery for the Popes and beautiful trinkets and ornaments for the French Court, such as the salt-cellar for Francis I. Many of his contemporaries such as Michelangelo are described by him in an intimate manner. The illustrations, which include all Cellini's works that have been preserved, as well as scenes from Renaissance life, were chosen by Sir John Pope-Hennessy, who died in 1994. [via]

The author traces the history of the depiction of the human body from the earliest civilized times to the present day. Starting with the Greeks who used the nude to express certain fundamental human needs, such as the need for harmony and order (Apollo), and the need to sublimate desire (Venus), he shows how these types of bodily expression were revived in 15th-century Italy and given new urgency by Michelangelo, whose genius almost exhausted the possibilities of the male nude. The female body, however, through Titian, Rubens, Ingres and Renoir has continued to be a source of pictorial inspiration, and the author examines the uneasy relationship with the nude of such moderns as Matisse and Picasso. To achieve the quiet beauty of his art, Andy Goldsworthy spends long hours in rough weather, engaged in a tug-of-war with nature. He wrestles heavy stones on top of one another to form tall, egg-shaped landmarks known as cairns. He painstakingly covers fallen logs with bright golden bands of Dutch elm leavesa last hurrah for a proud species decimated by disease. He pulverizes white chalk to lay a long, wandering path in the woods that gleams in the moonlight. Works like these are as much about the transience of life as they are about a sense of place and the pleasures of color, light and form. In Passage, the British artist's latest book, he once again provides diary excerpts that chronicle his daily successes and failures. The lush color photographs he takes to document peak moments of the birth, glory and decay of his art are as beautiful as ever. Unlike the other books, however, Passage--which begins in 2000 and darts back and forth over the next few years--is shadowed by a more urgent sense of mortality. Goldworthy's recently deceased father is in his thoughts, and a major project he tackles is the memorial Garden of Stones for the Museum of Jewish Heritage in New York. The garden's giant boulders pose many difficulties--finding the right ones, acquiring them, moving them, experimenting with cutting processes and coping with the elderly stonecutter's frequent tantrums. Hollowed out, the stones will be filled with trowels of earth (a ritual recalling burial) and tiny oak saplings, symbolic of life. "The partnership between tree and stone will be stronger for the tree having grown from the stone, rather than being stuck into it," Goldsworthy writes in his straightforward style. (An essay about this project by the historian Simon Schama, previously published in The New Yorker, is one of several pieces by other writers included in the book.) Once again, Goldsworthy succeeds in showing how seemingly simple ideas and actions can deeply engage both natural forces and human emotions. Cathy Curtis [via]
