› Find signed collectible books: 'The Complete Short Stories of H.G. Wells'
The first one-volume edition of the short stories of H.G.Wells - a total of 84 stories by one of the Great masters of the genre. Herbert George Wells - author of The Time Machine and the war of the worlds - was on of the founding-fathers of modern science fiction. But in his short stories, written when he was a young man embarking on a literary career, that he first explored the enormous potential of the scientific discoveries of his day. He described his stories as ' a miscellany of inventions ', yet his enthusiasm for science is tempered by an awareness of it's horrifying destructive power and the threat it could pose to the whole human race. A consummate story teller, he makes fantastical creatures and machines entirely believable; and by placing ordinary men and women in extroadinary situations he humorously explores what it means to be alive in a century of rapid scientific progress. At the close of the millennium, in the age of Dolly the sheep, Wells fin de Siecle vision is more pertinent than ever before. [via]

› Find signed collectible books: 'Eco-Tech: Sustainable Architecture and High Technology'
This international survey presents projects completed in the last decade which use high-tech forms and materials in environmentally intelligent structures. Bringing together approaches by established practitioners - Richard Rogers, Norman Foster, Nicholas Grimshaw and Michael Hopkins - with a new generation of architects - Thomas Herzog, Von Gerkan Marg, Design Antenna and Future Systems - this book presents their examples in detailed form. The introduction charts the evolution of high-tech architecture and its progression toward more ecological concerns, while the movement as a whole is considered in a broader architectural context. At the centre of the book is a selection of 40 of the world's most sophisticated projects, each with a description of its unique architectural and technological features, as well as plans, drawings and sketches. A reference section includes architect biographies and technical details of each project. [via]

IN SEARCH OF THE INDO-EUROPEANS is essential reading for those interested in the people who spoke the ancestor of most tongues of Europe and western Asia. While scholars have carefully reconstructed a proto-language, the identity of its speakers and their geographical origin remain a mystery, and J.P. Mallory shows what is currently thought in the field. Mallory begins by tracing the historical development of European comparative linguistics, and then examines the various branches of the Indo-European language family first in Asia, then in Europe. › Find signed collectible books: 'Life Before Man'
This is an introduction to the panorama of life on Earth, from its earliest beginnings more than 3000 million years ago to the arrival of Homo sapiens and the introduction of settled farming, 5000 years ago. The text is accompanied by a sequence of over 160 specially commissioned illustrations, showing the conditions on Earth in its early days and the strange animal life that once roamed its surface or moved in its seas. Beginning with an account of the various theories that seek to explain the birth of the solar system and its planets, the book continues with a detailed explanation of the evolution of living things, from the first signs of single-celled life to the arrival of marine vertebrates, from the appearance of dinosaurs to the emergence of the ape-like ancestors of modern man. Time charts show the sequence of geological eras and the points at which various forms of life first appeared. [via]

› Find signed collectible books: 'The Man Who Deciphered Linear B: The Story of Michael Ventris'
Linear B is Europe's oldest readable writing, dating from the middle of the second millennium BC. First discovered in 1900, on clay tablets among the ruins of the Palace of Minos at Knossos, Crete, it remained a mystery for over fifty years until 1952, when Michael Ventris discovered that its signs did not represent an unknown language as previously believed, but an archaic dialect of Greek, more than 500 years older than the Greek of Homer. Dubbled 'the Everest of archaeology', the decipherment was all the more remarkable because Ventris was not a trained classical scholar but an architect by profession, who had first heard of linear B as a schoolboy. An initial fascination became a lifelong obsession for this intriguing and contradictory man, a gifted linguist but a divided soul. This is the first book to tell not just the story of Linear B but that of the 'modest genius' who broke the code. [via]

› Find signed collectible books: 'Sacred Geometry: Philosophy and Practice'
An introduction to the geometry which, as modern science now confirms, underlies the structure of the universe.
The thinkers of ancient Egypt, Greece and India recognized that numbers governed much of what they saw in their world and hence provided an approach to its divine creator. Robert Lawlor sets out the system that determines the dimension and the form of both man-made and natural structures, from Gothic cathedrals to flowers, from music to the human body. By also involving the reader in practical experiments, he leads with ease from simple principles to a grasp of the logarithmic spiral, the Golden Proportion, the squaring of the circle and other ubiquitous ratios and proportions.More editions of Sacred Geometry: Philosophy and Practice:

› Find signed collectible books: 'Stonehenge Complete'
Since its first and prize-winning edition of 1983, "Stonehenge Complete has established itself as the classic account of this most famous of ancient places. For this new edition, Christopher Chippindale has revised and updated the story to include the latest theories and discoveries. People have puzzled over Stonehenge for centuries, speculating and dreaming about it, drawing and painting it, trying to make sense of it. Here is the story of the one real Stonehenge, as well as the many unreal Stonehenges that archaeologists, tourists, mystics, astronomers, artists, poets, and visionaries have made out of it. New studies in the last decade have revolutionized our knowledge of the complex sequence of structures that make its celebrated profile; remarkably, these new discoveries have been made without new excavations. Stonehenge today is as lively as it ever was. After a period of dissent and confrontation, visitors are once again welcome to see the sun rise over the Heel stone on midsummer solstice day, and some 20,000 people are expected to gather at midsummer dawn this year. As the new edition explains, they are in error: although Stonehenge is indeed astronomically oriented, it is not aligned on the midsummer sunrise at all. [via]

› Find signed collectible books: 'The Story of Writing: Alphabets, Hieroglyphs, and Pictograms'
People can be interested in language, writing and scripts. They may wonder how, when and where did writing evolve? Do alphabets function better than hieroglyphs? And are we today, in the computer age, moving towards a "universal language" of signs and symbols? This text aims to demystify writing for the general reader. It explains the interconnection between sound, symbol and script for each of the major writing systems in turn, and discovers and deciphers writing forms from cuneiform and Egyptian and Maya hieroglyphs to alphabets and the scripts of China and Japan today. Throughout, the reader is guided by step-by-step graphic analysis of the way each script works, with illustrated examples. [via]
