Describing Tolstoy's crisis of depression and estrangement from the world, A Confession (1879) is an autobiographical work of exceptional emotional honesty. By the time he was fifty, Tolstoy had already written the novels that would assure him of literary immortality; he had a wife, a large estate and numerous children; he was a happy man' and in good health - yet life had lost its meaning. In this poignant confessional fragment, he records a period of his life when he began to turn away from fiction and aesthetics, and to search instead for a practical religion not promising future bliss, but giving bliss on earth'. The Harvest of Sorrow is the first full history of one of the most horrendous human tragedies of the 20th century. Between 1929 and 1932 the Soviet Communist Party struck a double blow at the Russian peasantry: dekulakization, the dispossession and deportation of millions of peasant families, and collectivization, the abolition of private ownership of land and the concentration of the remaining peasants in party-controlled "collective" farms. This was followed in 1932-33 by a "terror-famine," inflicted by the State on the collectivized peasants of the Ukraine and certain other areas by setting impossibly high grain quotas, removing every other source of food, and preventing help from outside--even from other areas of the Soviet Union--from reaching the starving populace. The death toll resulting from the actions described in this book was an estimated 14.5 million--more than the total number of deaths for all countries in World War I.
Ambitious, meticulously researched, and lucidly written, The Harvest of Sorrow is a deeply moving testament to those who died, and will register in the Western consciousness a sense of the dark side of this century's history. [via]

While "The Kreutzer Sonata" caused a public sensation, Tolstoy's wife, Sonya, was hurt and furious that he should have enriched his scathing indictment of marriage with private details from theri own life together. Tolstoy, during two years of obsessive unhappiness, had become convinced that the idea of a "Christian marriage" was an impossibility. Here he lets loose all his frustration and disgust at human sexuality, and the humiliating, ungodly, sensual tie that binds men to women. The curious result, part self-lacerating, confession, part Christian polemic, is moving, above all, as the story of a man whose sexual jealousy, inflamed by guilt, drives him to murder his wife. Anton Pavlovich Chekhov(1860-1904) may be likened to his contemporaries, the "pointilliste" painters. Piece by piece, episode by episode, character by character, he constructs in prose a survey of the human condition. as David Magarshack writes in his introduction, on reading these stories 'one gets the impression of holding life itself, like a fluttering bird, in one's cupped hands'. Vladimir Nabokov was forced to leave his native Russia in 1919 at the age of twenty to escape what he called "the bloated octopus of the state." He took with him a passionate love for his homeland and for the "fiery, fanciful, free" literature of his countrymen, intensified later by the knowledge that the Soviet government had dedicated itself to smothering the independence and creativity that had flourished before the Bolshevik Revolution. For Nabokov the great Russian writers of the 19th century were more than artists; they were the last unfettered voices from the land of his birth. It was, therefore, with a spirit of angry nostalgia augmented by his admiration for literary art that Nabokov delivered these lectures. His subjects here are "Russian Writers, Censors, and Readers," Gogol, Turgenev, Dostoevski, Tolstoy, Chekhov, Gorki, "Philistines and Philistinism," and "The Art of Translation." Nabokov delivers his remarks with a compelling blend of wit, iconoclasm, and critical genius, skillfully guiding us through the intricacies of plot and character in the books he discusses, caressing the details, explaining their significance, and illuminating the artistic accomplishments of the authors. Thirty-eight illustrations show the care with which Nabokov prepared these lectures. There are, for example, his drawings of a Russian tennis dress and a skating costume similar to those mentioned in Anna Karenin, and a plan for the sleeping car in which Anna rode from Moscow to St. Petersburg. His diligent retranslations of the standard English texts are shown in sample pages from his annotated books. The painstaking process of composing these lectures is revealed in specimen pages of his notes that show his extensive preparation and layers of revision. These lectures on his native literature confirm the high praise earned by Lectures on Literature. Vladirnir Nabokov was a spellbinding critic-teacher because he was also a major literary artist. You could be excused for thinking that this book is one containing a simple story for young children about a Little Prince. How wrong you would be! This is far from the truth: it is much more. It is a complex story containing lots of ambiguities about a child with golden hair. These are all eruditely discussed before the actual story begins, in a section entitled "How It All Began". "Is The Little Prince a story written for children or is it a meditation intended for adults?"
The Art of Living is discussed, along with a system of values, and the train of thought behind them is the unifying element. You are invited to "look at the book, and allow yourself to travel from one image to the next... " It was written and published more than 50 years ago in the USA, and the author was a Frenchman who illustrated the book himself; it was later translated by Kathryn Woods. The Little Prince is still very popular and has now been translated into many languages. Shortly after it was first written, the author died--disappearing together with his plane somewhere over the Mediterranean. This Gift edition contains all the original illustrations, plus some more original drawings that came to light later and have been published here for the first time.--Susan Naylor

A contemporary look and plenty of "cool appeal" will grab kids' interest and ensure they don't miss out on reading this classic of the genre. --Jonathan Weir [via]

The dramatic works of Anton Chekhov (1860-1904) present the actions of ordinary people. He avoids any explicit political treatment, but the depth and subtlety of his art has generated a wealth of interpretation. His representation of human relationships is infinitely sympathetic, and each play contains at least one character who expresses Chekhov's hopes for a brighter future. "The Cherry Orchard" and "Three Sisters" was first published in this translation in 1951. "The Seagull", "Uncle Vania", "The Bear", "The Proposal" and "The Jubilee" were first published in this translation in 1954. [via]

With their penetrating psychological insight and their emphasis on human dignity, respect and forgiveness, Dostoyevsky's early short stories contain the seeds of the themes that came to his major novels. "Poor Folk", the author's first great literary triumph, is the story of a tragic relationship between an impoverished copy clerk and a young seamstress, told through their passionate letters to each other. In "The Landlady", Dostoyevsky portrays a dreamer hero who is captivated by a curious couple and becomes their lodger. Mr. Prokharchin, inspired by a true story, is a sly comedy centring on an eccentric miser, and Polzunkov is a powerful character sketch which, in common with the other tales in this volume, questions the very nature of existence. Winner of the Heineman Prize and the Governor General's Award for nonfiction, Michael Ignatieff's The Russian Album is a sumptuous exploration of four generations of the aristocratic Ignatieff family. In particular, Ignatieff focuses on the lives of his paternal grandparents, Princess Natasha Mestchersky and Count Paul Ignatieff, minister of education under Nicholas II, who resigned his post on the eve of the Bolshevik Revolution and was saved from the ensuing bloodshed by his students.
The Russian Album is at once a rich and loving personal history of an extraordinary family and a chronicle of that family's connection with the history of imperial Russia. It details the life of the Ignatieffs in Czarist Russia as well as their escape after the Russian Revolution in 1917, their sojourn in London and Paris and their eventual journey to Canada. Ignatieff uses family photographs and excerpts from diaries and letters to give readers a taste of the life that his ancestors lived, but The Russian Album isn't a celebration of Czarist Russia as much as an exploration of the strength of family ties, and one of the most touching moments of the book focuses on Ignatieff's conversation with his grandfather's remaining sons about their father and their memories of him. In the final reckoning, it is Ignatieff's attention to the Ignatieff past, rather than his own present, that makes the book such a powerful reading experience. --Jeffrey Canton [via]

Hitler made two fundamental and crippling mistakes during the Second World War. The first was his whimsical belief that the United Kingdom would eventually become his ally, which delayed his decision to launch a major invasion of Britain, whose army was unprepared for the force of blitzkrieg warfare. The second was the ill-conceived Operation Barbarossa--an invasion of Russia that was supposed to take the German army to the gates of Moscow. Antony Beevor's thoughtfully researched compendium recalls this epic struggle for Stalingrad. No one, least of all the Germans, could foretell the deep well of Soviet resolve that would become the foundation of the Red Army; Russia, the Germans believed, would fall as swiftly as France and Poland. The ill-prepared Nazi forces were trapped in a bloody war of attrition against the Russian behemoth, which held them in the pit of Stalingrad for nearly two years. Beevor points out that the Russians were by no means ready for the war either, making their stand even more remarkable; Soviet intelligence spent as much time spying on its own forces--in fear of desertion, treachery and incompetence--as they did on the Nazis. Due attention is also given to the points of view of the soldiers and generals of both forces, from the sickening battles to life in the gulags.
Many believe Stalingrad to be the turning point of the war. The Nazi war machine proved to be fallible as it spread itself too thin for a cause that was born more from arrogance than practicality. The Germans never recovered, and its weakened defences were no match for the Allied invasion of 1944. We know little of what took place in Stalingrad or its overall significance, leading Beevor to humbly admit that "[t]he Battle of Stalingrad remains such an ideologically charged and symbolically important subject that the last word will not be heard for many years". This is true. But this gripping account should become the standard work against which all others should measure themselves. --Jeremy Storey [via]

Lenin-s work What Is To Be Done? was written at the end of 1901 and early in 1902. In -Where To Begin-, published in Iskra, No. 4 (May 1901), Lenin said that the article represented -a skeleton plan to be developed in greater detail in a pamphlet now in preparation for print-.
Lenin began the actual writing of the book in the autumn of 1901. In his -Preface to the Pamphlet Documents of the -Unity- Conference-, written in November 1901, Lenin said that the book was in preparation -to be published in the near future-. In December Lenin published (in Iskra, No. 12) his article -A Talk with Defenders of Economism-, which he later called a conspectus of What Is To Be Done? He wrote the Preface to the book in February 1902 and early in March the book was published by Dietz in Stuttgart. An announcement of its publication was printed in Iskra, No. 18, March 10, 1902.
In republishing the book in 1907 as part of the collection Twelve Years, Lenin omitted Section A of Chapter V, -Who Was Offended by the Article -Where To Begin,-- stating in the Preface that the book was being published with slight abridgements, representing the omission solely of details of the organisational relationships and minor polemical remarks. Lenin added five footnotes to the new edition.
The text of this volume is that of the 1902 edition, verified with the 1907 edition.
