The product of an agreeably dotty cleric named Edwin Abbott Abbott and first published in 1884, Flatland distills all that the Victorian era knew of higher mathematics--and then some--into a witty, complex novel of ideas.
Ian Stewart, the author of the equally witty sequel, Flatterland--which adds to Abbott's store of science the key discoveries made since--does a superb job of explaining the original book's enigmas, allusions, ironies, implausibilities, and what Douglas Hofstadter would call "metamagical themas." Among other things, Stewart comments on Abbott's comments on such things as the nature/nurture controversy, the fourth dimension and beyond, the role of multidimensional spaces in economic systems, infinite series and perfect squares, celestial mechanics, and other matters close to the hearts of cosmologists and science buffs alike.
Stewart's notes make an entertaining and learned addition to an already classic bit of writing--one that has never been out of print since its first publication. For both devoted Abbott fans and newcomers to his work, this is the edition to have. --Gregory McNamee [via]

Flatland is one of the very few novels about math and philosophy that can appeal to almost any layperson. Published in 1880, this short fantasy takes us to a completely flat world of two physical dimensions where all the inhabitants are geometric shapes, and who think the planar world of length and width that they know is all there is. But one inhabitant discovers the existence of a third physical dimension, enabling him to finally grasp the concept of a fourth dimension. Watching our Flatland narrator, we begin to get an idea of the limitations of our own assumptions about reality, and we start to learn how to think about the confusing problem of higher dimensions. The book is also quite a funny satire on society and class distinctions of Victorian England. [via]

This book provides an in-depth study of the Soviet Army during the offensive operations that started with Battle of Stalingrad in December 1942 and went until Spring 1943. The lessons learned by the Soviet Army from these experiences helped design the military steamroller that decimated the German panzer divisions at Kursk in the Summer of 1943. [via]

Based in New York, Ilya Kabatov is considered the most important Russian artist to have emerged in the late-20th century. His installations are after akin to theatrical "mise-en-scenes", presenting a cramped communal apartment or a flooded art museum as though they are comedies on human frustration and doomed aspirations. Boris Groys, art critic and philosopher, surveys the artist's long career, analyzing its philosophical and formal dimensions in terms of art history, as well as the artist's biography. David A. Ross, Director of the Whitney Museum of American Art, New York, discusses the artist's bridging of eastern and western contemporary art practices. Curator at the Tate Gallery of Modern art, Iwona Blazwick concentrates on the artist's contribution to the Skulptur Projekte Munster 1997, "Looking up. Reading the words". Anton Checkov's short story, "The Steppe", mirrors Kabakov's own, uniquely Russian blend of irony and tragedy. The artist's writings, which include a short text on contemporary art in the former Soviet Union, an illustrated fairy-tale and an article on Cezanne complete this monograph. The book is part of a series of studies of important artists of the late-20th century. Each title offers a comprehensive survey of the artist's work, providing analyses and multiple perspectives on contemporary art and its inspiration. [via]

In 1992, MI6 exfiltrated Vasili Mitrokhin, the most senior activist in the KGB, who had been responsible for running the KGB archives. He had noted thousands of documents, described by the FBI as the greatest single cache of intelligence ever received by the West.' This archive resulted in many prosecutions, some of which are still ongoing. After his defection, Mitrokhin teamed up with Christopher Andrew, Professor of Modern History at Cambridge and the world's leading intelligence scholar. Their first volume, The KGB in Europe and the West, revealed the extent of KGB penetration of what they called The Main Adversary and the existence of a previously unknown nuclear spy, Melita Norwood. The second volume, The KGB and the World, continues the revelations from the sublime to the absurd - which Third World leaders were in the pay of the KGB, precisely how extensive KGB penetration of foreign governments was, and how KGB agents were instructed to assess the spread of the influence of rival Chinese communism (by going round African capitals trying to count the changing number of posters of Mao Tse-tung in shops and public buildings...) Turgenev's play, which he began writing in 1849 when he was 31, is the story of his own disappointed romance with the wife of a friend. His devotion was only partially reciprocated and this cast a shadow over the young man. He called his play "The Student," but it did not receive a production; it was banned on the grounds of immorality. Turgenev then cut out the character of the husband and transformed the wife into a widow, but the play was still not performed, although it was published in this distorted form in 1855, under the title "Two Women." Marc Chagall--one of the greatest of all twentieth-century painters--died in 1985, during a major exhibition of his work, mounted jointly by the Royal Academy of Arts in London and the Philadelphia Museum of Art. This exhibition had as one of its main features quotations taken from Chagall's autobiography, My Life.
Originally published in English in 1965, Chagall's My Life offers a lyrical and evocative account of the author's early life and tremendous insight into the shaping of his creative genius. His literary style--playful and witty arabesques of fantasy that remind us of his visual imagery--accentuates his descriptions of his childhood spent in the provincial Russian town of Witebsk, his early adventures, and his first meeting with Bella, the woman who later became his wife. He depicts his struggle as an artist in the face of poverty and opposition, followed by the fruitful years in Paris where he found fulfillment and recognition. Chagall ends his account by describing his return to Russia at the outbreak of World War I and the despair that finally induced him to return to France with Bella and their young daughter in 1922. At the onset of the Cold War in 1944, Friedrich A. Hayek wrote his classic book The Road to Serfdom to warn that central planning threatens freedom. Now Robert Skidelsky, author of an acclaimed biography of John Maynard Keynes, looks at the havoc central planning has wrought since then. Despite the seeming chaos of the post-communist world, Skidelsky argues that the global failure and collapse of collectivism as a principle of social organization is one of the most hopeful events of the 20th century. His book elegantly combines recent history and economics to make the case. Hayek would have loved it. [via]

John le Carre's classic novels deftly navigate readers through the intricate shadow worlds of international espionage with unsurpassed skill and knowledge and have earned him -- and his hero, British Secret Service agent George Smiley -- unprecedented worldwide acclaim.
A modern masterpiece in which le Carre expertly creates a total vision of a secret world, "Tinker, Tailor, Soldier, Spy" begins George Smiley's chess match of wills and wits with Karla, his Soviet counterpart.
It is now beyond doubt that a mole, implanted decades ago by Moscow Centre, has burrowed his way into the highest echelons of British Intelligence. His treachery has already blown some of its most vital operations and its best networks. It is clear that the double agent is one of its own kind. But which one? George Smiley is assigned to identify him. And once identified, the traitor must be destroyed. [via]

For almost 300 years, from the 8th to the 11th centuries, the Vikings played an important and often decisive role in shaping the history of large parts of Europe. Their long ships took them from Scandinavia to conquer England, exploit the Franklin Empire, rule Normandy, trade in Russia, colonize Iceland, discover Greenland and America and much else. At the same time the three Scandinavian kingdoms of Denmark, Norway and Sweden started to take form. Towns were founded, far-flung trade routes were organized, art and poetry flourished and Christianity was introduced. This book covers the contributions of the many disciplines involved in modern Viking studies, giving a full survey of the Viking's achievements abroad. It also investigates the background which made it all possible and presents a picture of a strong, self-contained and fast developing society and culture. It discusses the sources of our knowledge, and those of the popular Viking myth. [via]

[This is the Audiobook CD Library Edition in vinyl case.]
[Read by Geoffrey Blaisdell]
What Is Art? is the result of fifteen years' reflection on the nature and purpose of art.
Tolstoy claims that all good art is related to the authentic life of the broader community and that the aesthetic value of a work of art is not independent of its moral content. The book is noteworthy not only for its famous iconoclasm and compelling attacks on the aestheticist notion of ''art for art's sake'' but even more for its wit, its lucid and beautiful prose, and its sincere expression of the deepest social conscience.
Tolstoy is an author critics typically rank alongside Shakespeare and Homer. A sustained consideration of the cultural import of art by someone who was himself an artist of the highest stature will always remain relevant and fascinating to anyone interested in the place of art and literature in society. Editors Joan Grossman and Ruth Rischin pose to their contributors an intriguing question: What happens when the ideas of a thinker like William James, whodespite his originalitywas deeply rooted in American traditions, are refracted through a culture that draws on a heritage profoundly different from his own? Including studies of reception and interpretation of James's major works and analyses of the impact of his own philosophy on certain Russian writers and thinkers, William James in Russian Culture reveals striking parallels among and divergences between the intellectual and the spiritual realms.
