To walk through Rome today is to find the past made present at nearly every corner. For John Stambaugh, this continuity of fabric, form, and function affords an extraordinary view of the ancient city, the experience of its inhabitants, and the Roman way of life. Exploring ancient Rome as both a physical and social environment, he has written the first extended survey of its development in English - and a vivid "guidebook into the living past of one of the most emphatically urban cities the world has ever known." "I don't think there's any glory in being remembered as old moneybags," said oil baron J. Paul Getty in the early l950s, when he was vacillating between amassing all kinds of art and narrowing his focus to ancient sculpture. Getty's fabulous billions have spawned three museums, most recently the "architectural commission of the century," as Richard Meier's hilltop Getty Center, 13 years in creation, is called. In the early '70s, Getty oversaw the previous museum, the fabulous, 48,000-square-foot, pseudo-Roman villa overlooking the Pacific just north of Los Angeles that was greeted with critical jeers and popular accolades when it opened in 1974. As this beautiful book makes clear, Getty's spending has not been in vain. Written by John Walsh, longtime director of the J. Paul Getty Museum, and Deborah Gribbon, associate director, it serves three purposes: it is a biographical sketch of the eccentric, high-living billionaire; it is a selective catalog of the Getty's peerless collections of sculpture, illuminated manuscripts, paintings, drawings, and decorative arts: and it is a history of the three "eras" of the Getty's three locations. The quality of the museum's holdings, from Greek statuary to early-20th-century photographs, is breathtaking, and the 200 color plates here do them justice. Carpaccio's Hunting on the Lagoon, van Gogh's Irises, and Michelangelo's sketch for The Holy Family with the Infant Saint John the Baptist, along with drawings by Titian, Raphael, da Vinci, Rubens, Poussin, Watteau, Cézanne, and Rembrandt are pictured, as is the classical statuary for which the Getty is justly world-renowned. --Peggy Moorman [via]

Lying at the heart of the Western classical tradition, the rich legacy of the arts of ancient Greece and Rome continues to provide inspiration and guidance to artists and art lovers everywhere. Lavishly illustrated and masterfully prepared under the editorships of John Boardman, one of the world's preeminent classicists, The Oxford History of Classical Art offers readers the definitive companion to the artistic and architectural achievements of the Greco-Roman world, from the rise of the Greek city-states to the fall of the Roman Empire.
Written by Boardman and a team of distinguished experts including J.J. Pollitt, Alan W. Johnston, R.R.R. Smith, and Janet Huskinson, this sumptuous volume presents the full pageantry and glory of the classical world, tracing the origins and evolution of classical art as it gradually moved from the art of individuals and small communities to the art of a world power. Particular attention is paid throughout to the splendor and quality of the arts themselves, aptly represented in 442 stunningly beautiful black and white and full-color plates.
Destined to become the definitive sourcebook in its field, The Oxford History of Classical Art is indispensable for anyone intrigued by the timeless heritage of the ancient world. [via]

Excavations at Popeii have been going on for more than two centuires, since 1748, and discoveries there have regularly produced new and important information about ancient Roman life. The site holds a rich concentration of municipal buildings, houses of every size and condition, villas, and tombs. Now in paperback, the first book of this century written in English devoted to Pompeian architecture and urban development tells the story of the city and its buildings. With text and illustrations, L. Richardson, jr portrays Pompeii in context, as a keystone in the architectural history of antiquity.
Pompeii's life was comparatively short. From its meteoric rise as a seaport and shipbuilding center during the First Punic War until its abrupt destruction with the eruption of Vesuvius in A. D. 79, the city passed through four major building periods. After a general introduction to Pompeii's history and geography, the book proceeds through each period, discussing its public buildings, private buildings, and tombs. Each building is described and placed according to its importance in the development of its particular architectural form. Richardson offers new dates and arrives at new conclusions about the development of such important features as the city plan, fortifications, and the atrium/peristyle house. Fifty ground plans and twenty-five photographs illustrate the text.
"There has long been a need for a comprehensive account in English of the architecture and urban development of Pompeii. Richardson's book makes a valiant effort to remedy the deficiency, and will be particularly welcome to all students of Roman architecture"--Classical Review

Facsimile reprint of a classic Phaidon title, written and designed by the co-founder of the company, and containing 120 beautiful full-page plates of the powerfully realistic marble portraits for which the Romans were renowned Among the greatest artistic achievements of the Roman Empire are portrait sculptures. Derived from an ancient tradition of making funerary effigies, these portraits are astonishing in their realism and expressive power, and their stern humanity speaks to us across the millennia with undiminished force and directness. Roman Portraits is a unchanged reprint in slightly reduced format of a classic Phaidon plate book first published in 1940. Its distinguished author, Ludwig Goldscheider, who was one of the founders of Phaidon Press, not only wrote the text, but made the selection of images and designed the book himself. The remarkable photographs were taken by the writer and photographer Ilse Schneider-Lengyel, who was commissioned by Phaidon in the 1930s to photograph antique and Renaissance sculpture in the great museums of Europe. Portraits are always fascinating, and the powerful, brooding faces in this book have a compelling and haunting quality that will ap [via]

Picture a world where good sex is a blessing of the gods, not a cause for guilt, and where acts often considered immoral, even illegal by our standards are instead celebrated. Such a world is no futurist's fantasy but rather the reality of ancient Rome, 100 BC to 250 AD. In "Roman Sex", an illustrated, contextual study of the erotic art of that era, historian John R. Clarke exposes paintings, sculptures and ceramics featuring such controversial subject matter as group sex, lesbianism and the phallus as talisman. He then uses these works to explain ancient Roman attitudes towards a range of societal issues. [via]

This volume offers a grand tour of one of the world's greatest museums, featuring masterpieces dating from ancient civilizations to the 19th century. Two hundred years ago, the doors of hte Louvre opened to the public for the very first time. The palace of the French Kings had been transformed into a museum that today stretches over an enormous area right in the heart of Paris. The royal collections first assembled by Francis I in the 16th century were later transferred to the Louvre palace, and this prestigious core was further enriched with artistic treasures during the Revolutionary period. The collections have been growing ever since, and today are divided into seven departments. Oriental Antiquities, Egyptian Antiquities and Greek, Etruscan and Roman Antiquities illustrate the art and culture of the ancient Near East, Middle East and Mediterranean countries. The other four so-called "modern" departments - painting, sculpture, decorative arts and drawing - span Western art from the height of the Middle Ages to the mid-19th century. With over 400 superb reproductions, this comprehensive guide book highlights the extraordinary range of artistic traditions that have gradually found their place in the Louvre. [via]

Approximately 2,025 years ago, an aged Roman architect named Vitruvius wrote down on ten scrolls everything he knew about architecture. He presented this work, known today as "Ten Books on Architecture," to Emperor Augustus in the hope of changing what he perceived as a rampant lack of professionalism and educational rigor in the practice of architecture. The "Ten Books," the most comprehensive architectural book written in antiquity and the only such work to survive, is a seminal volume in Western culture and continues to be an important resource. "Viturvius on Architecture" presents not only a new translation of the five books most relevant to contemporary architecture but also new drawings and watercolors that illustrate, for the first time since ancient days, Vitruvis's methods of proportion and composition. Architect and educator Thomas Gordon Smith re-created these finely detailed illustrations directly from the text. Also included are many photographs of historic architecture from Greece, Italy, Turkey, and throughout the Mediterranean region. This new edition of an ancient tome is intended for practical application, as an indispensable reference for classical studies, and as an incontrovertible example of the enduring value of the architecture of antiquity for contemporary education and practice. For the first time in more than half a century, Vitruvius' Ten Books on Architecture is being published in English. The only full treatise on architecture and its related arts to survive from classical antiquity, the Architecture libri decem (Ten Books on Architecture) is the single most important work of architectural history in the Western world, having shaped architecture and the image of the architect from the Renaissance to the present. Demonstrating the range of Vitruvius' style, this new edition includes examples from archaeological sites discovered since World War II and not previously published in English language translations. Rowland's new translation and Howe's critical commentary and illustrations provide a new image of Vitruvius, who emerges as an inventive and creative thinker, rather than the normative summarizer, as he was characterized in the Middle Ages and Renaissance. Ingrid D. Rowland is an associate professor of Art History at the University of Chicago. Thomas Noble Howe is a professor in the Department of Art at Southwestern University in Georgetown, Texas.
