› Find signed collectible books: 'Advanced Celtic Shamanism'
The hazel tree and the sacred well - ancient mythical symbols of Celtic wisdom and spirituality - provide a thread to follow through history and lore, back to the ancient practice of European shamanism. In her new book, D. J. Conway uses the four paths of shamanism (healer, bard, warrior, and mystic) to translate Celtic spirituality into a usable form for today's seekers. Unlike beginners' guides now on the market, this book is an advanced study of the practice. [via]

Animal sacrifice, elf charms, amulets, divination, astronomy, astrology: an investigation into the practice, methods and ideas associated with Anglo-Saxon magic. The evidence presented is wide-ranging and authoritative. Inevitably some of the sources are familiar, but in association with archaeology, or other less frequently consulted texts, new perspectives are revealed. The book is accompanied by a large selection of the most relevant material, presented in the original and translated. [via]

One spring morning two men cutting peat in a Danish bog uncovered a well-preserved body of a man with a noose around his neck. Thinking they had stumbled upon a murder victim, they reported their discovery to the police, who were baffled until they consulted the famous archaeologist P.V. Glob. Glob identified the body as that of a two-thousand-year-old man, ritually murdered and thrown in the bog as a sacrifice to the goddess of fertility.
Written in the guise of a scientific detective story, this classic of archaeological history--a best-seller when it was published in England but out of print for many years--is a thoroughly engrossing and still reliable account of the religion, culture, and daily life of the European Iron Age.
Includes 76 black-and-white photographs. [via]

› Find signed collectible books: 'The Book of Black Magic and Ceremonial Magic'
With this book the author has assembled together a number of magical spells and treatises from a variety of obscure sources. The result is a great overview of magic from one of the most important figures in Western occultism. When critical at times of Eliphas Levi and Waite's former associate, S. L. MacGregor Mathers, it shows an attempt at being honest with his views on magic. He also covers many of the original early grimoires, sometimes quoting them, and points out flaws in the more recent translations of his time. This is an expanded, updated version of his previous work, The Book of Black Magic. The book is a gold-mine of smaller magical pamphlets published in France in the nineteenth century, which were reproductions of earlier eighteenth-century works, now preserved in this book and valued for their content. All in all this is not so much a book of rituals to perform, which are plentiful and easy to find. It is instead a great reference book on ritual magic, of which only a few good ones exist today. In this regard, it is considered one of the best. [via]

Tayo, a young Native American, has been a prisoner of the Japanese during World War II, and the horrors of captivity have almost eroded his will to survive. His return to the Laguna Pueblo reservation only increases his feeling of estrangement and alienation. While other returning soldiers find easy refuge in alcohol and senseless violence, Tayo searches for another kind of comfort and resolution.
Tayo's quest leads him back to the Indian past and its traditions, to beliefs about witchcraft and evil, and to the ancient stories of his people. The search itself becomes a ritual, a curative ceremny that defeats the most virulent of afflictionsdespair.

Have you ever touched wood for luck? "If so, you are practicing a form of tree magic," explains psychic Cassandra Eason in A Complete Guide to Magic and Ritual. In fact, the Celtic Druids touched sacred oaks to appease tree spirits when someone made a rash promise, she says. Even ancient Greeks and early Christians believed in the sacred power of wood. Like the tapping of wood, many of our customs and superstitions stem from a strong human connection to the natural world, explains Eason. Not surprisingly, when she teaches magical rituals, she often recommends props that can be found in nature, such as trees, shells, clay, herbs, and seeds. For instance, "dandelions act as transmitters for love" and "rosemary is an herb of passion, love and healing." And those whose "domestic harmony is being threatened by outside hostility should make an infusion of fresh parsley." She even offers a section on weather magic, where she speaks of the west wind's power to enhance "love and reconciliation" and the east wind's ability to bless "new beginnings." Eason teaches numerous other rituals, such as how to become more prosperous, divert gossip away from you, bless a union, and even "merge into the background when you are in a dangerous situation emotionally or physically." --Gail Hudson [via]

Popular demand for this clear-sighted compendium of information about the rebirth of Pagan religion hasn't waned since its initial publication in 1979. Distinguished by the journalism of US National Public Radio columnist Margot Adler, Drawing Down the Moon explains this diverse and burgeoning religion's philosophies and activities while dispelling stereotypes that have long been associated with it. Most people don't realise that "pagan" simply refers to pre-Christian polytheistic nature religions such as the various Native American creeds, Japanese Shinto, Celtic Druidry and Western European Wicca. Originally, the word pagan meant "country dweller" and was a derogatory term in third-century Rome, not unlike calling someone a "hick" today. If you find yourself feeling queasy when you hear the words witch or pagan, a healthy dose of re-education via Drawing Down the Moon could be the cure. --P. Randall Cohan [via]

The aim of the genuine magician, says W.E. Butler, is to realise that True Self of which his earthly personality is but the mask. In this book is to be found a remarkably concise explanation of the ancient uses, ritual and true aims of Magic. the author sweeps away the confusion caused by the many misconceptions, and surveys the history of Magic from the 'old religion' of pre-Christian times through to the discoveries of modern psychology. and it is, he says, with the modern school of psychology, particularly Jungian, that the magician finds his closest link with modern thought. Since the author is writing for Western man he is not concerned with Eastern magical systems, but here explains the 'Western Tradition' of Magic. This tradition embodies the teaching and practices that have been handed down from antiquity, the central philosophy on which it hinges being the corpus of Hebrew mystical wisdom known as the Qabalah. Magic, far from being an irrational superstition, is based upon profound psychological laws, and possesses its own special technique. Although repressed throughout the ages in the Western world, it has never ceased to exist and has from time to time emerged in different forms - one of the most notable in Britain being the 'Order of the Golden Dawn', which is still in existence, and perpetuates Western magical traditions. This book constitutes a most useful preliminary guide to any study 'in depth' of this admittedly vast subject. [via]

Aleister Crowley's ascension into the pantheon of alternative gurus was cemented by his appearance on The Beatles' Sgt. Pepper's Lonely Hearts Club Band album cover. Unfortunately, he was known more for his reputation as "The Beast 666" and "The Wickedest Man in the World." All well and good for publicity, but this infamy eclipsed his teachings, as did his technical and opaque writing style, meant more for adepts contemporary to him than the average modern reader. Enter Lon Milo DuQuette to decipher and explain Crowley's texts and more important rituals. Formerly titled The Magick of Thelema, this revised edition features extensive corrections, a new introduction, and a new ritual, "The Rites of Eleusis." This is the perfect introductory text for readers who wonder what the works--rather than the myth--of Aleister Crowley are all about. DuQuette takes the mystery out of both the rituals themselves and Crowley's writing in this modern grimoire. Step by step, he presents a course of study in plain English, with examples of rituals and explanations of their significance. DuQuette also includes a course of study for Crowley's original works with an extensive bibliography and fastidious footnotes. [via]

Court life throughout the golden age of Europe's ancien régime is invariably imagined as a world of decadent absolutist authority, a closed inner circle from which sovereigns such as James I and Louis XIV exercised complete control over their kingdoms. In his splendid collection The Princely Courts of Europe: 1500-1750, historian John Adamson brings together a fine group of essays on 12 of the greatest courts in Europe of the period, which offers a far more complicated picture of court life.
As Adamson argues in his concise introduction, "the court was never a single entity, nor did it offer a single route to patronage or power. In reality, the separate households of the ruler's consort, his heir, even those of powerful ministers, could operate to qualify or sometimes eclipse the authority of the ruler." Subsequent chapters by experts on the courts of the Spanish Habsburgs, the Valois, the Tudors and Stuarts, the House of Orange, Rome, the Hohenzollerns, and the Medici offer fascinating insights into the rituals, etiquette, politics, architecture, art, and daily life of the various courts. At the center of these courts lie some of the greatest and most infamous of all European monarchs, including Henry VIII, Charles V, Louis XIV, and Peter the Great. What really impresses about The Princely Courts of Europe is its eye for the artistic nature of court life. Lavish color illustrations throughout offer an insight into the visually arresting splendor of court life of the period. It is also admirable in offering interesting insights into the courts of Sweden and Russia, but where are the Ottoman Turks? --Jerry Brotton, Amazon.co.uk [via]

The red tent is the place where women gathered during their cycles of birthing, menses, and even illness. Like the conversations and mysteries held within this feminine tent, this sweeping piece of fiction offers an insider's look at the daily life of a biblical sorority of mothers and wives and their one and only daughter, Dinah. Told in the voice of Jacob's daughter Dinah (who only received a glimpse of recognition in the Book of Genesis), we are privy to the fascinating feminine characters who bled within the red tent. In a confiding and poetic voice, Dinah whispers stories of her four mothers, Rachel, Leah, Zilpah, and Bilhah--all wives to Jacob, and each one embodying unique feminine traits. As she reveals these sensual and emotionally charged stories we learn of birthing miracles, slaves, artisans, household gods, and sisterhood secrets. Eventually Dinah delves into her own saga of betrayals, grief, and a call to midwifery.
"Like any sisters who live together and share a husband, my mother and aunties spun a sticky web of loyalties and grudges," Anita Diamant writes in the voice of Dinah. "They traded secrets like bracelets, and these were handed down to me the only surviving girl. They told me things I was too young to hear. They held my face between their hands and made me swear to remember." Remembering women's earthy stories and passionate history is indeed the theme of this magnificent book. In fact, it's been said that The Red Tent is what the Bible might have been had it been written by God's daughters, instead of her sons. --Gail Hudson [via]

"I hate travelling and explorers," famously declared Claude Lévi-Strauss, but how fortunate for readers that he should overcome his loathing to write about his experiences among the indigenous peoples of the Brazilian interior, including the Caduveo, Bororo, and Nambikwara tribes. Those who know Lévi-Strauss and Tristes Tropiques by reputation only will be pleasantly surprised by the intimate tone that colors even its most precise anthropological sections, as well as the autobiographical passages at the beginning, in which the author recounts how he fell into his career and how, shortly after the Nazis occupied Paris, he was forced to flee to America in a grueling sea voyage. Twenty-five black-and-white photographs of tribespeople, as well as numerous line drawings, accompany the text. [via]

Starhawk and Hilary Valentine, renowned leaders in the Wicca movement, use the transformative fairy tale of The Twelve Wild Swans to teach an advanced class on magic. More significantly, this is an introduction to a mature level of Wicca called "Reclaiming"--a model of witchcraft that blends magic, personal growth and activism. The book begins with the first chapter of the fairytale, in which a foolish queen wishes to exchange her 12 sons for a daughter. An old woman "dressed all in black" overhears the queen and makes the wish come true--granting the queen a daughter but turning her sons into wild swans.
From here the coauthors launch into a back-and forth structure of telling the story and then stopping to show how it applies to a witch's initiation and transformation. For example, we all must leave the castle in order to heal our past. We all must spend some time wandering in the wilderness before finding our true home and we all must conquer some form of "wicked vows" before we can reach full maturity. These are wise leaders and strong guides--well worth following on this life-altering fairytale. --Tara West [via]

Robert Graves, the late British poet and novelist, was also known for his studies of the mythological and psychological sources of poetry. With The White Goddess: A Historical Grammar of Poetic Myth, Graves was able to combine many of his passions into one work. While the book is so poetically written that many of the passages amount to prose poems, it is also frequently plot driven enough to feel like a novel, and it is rich with scholarly insight into the deep wells of poetry. Especially fascinating is the chapter in which Graves explores the ancient and ongoing practice of poets' invoking the muse. Graves details the practice in both the Eastern and Western literary traditions, and shows specific similarities and differences among Greek, British, and Irish tales and myths about the muse. Graves has much to offer students of history and myth, but poetry lovers will also be fascinated with The White Goddess. [via]
