Aristotle (384-322BC) is the philosopher who has most influence on the development of western culture, writing on a wide variety of subjects including the natural sciences as well as the more strictly philosophical topics of logic, metaphysics and ethics. To the poet Dante, he was simply 'the master of those who know'. The Ethics contains his views on what makes a good human life. While the work continues to stimulate and challenge modern philosophers, the general course of the argument is easily accessible to the non-specialist. Both as a key influence in the history of ideas and as a work containing unique insights into the human condition, this is a book that simply demands to be read. [via]

The courtier has to imbue with grace his movements, his gestures, his way of doing things and in short, his every action
In The Book of the Courtier (1528), Baldesar Castiglione, a diplomat and Papal Nuncio to Rome, sets out to define the essential virtues for those at Court. In a lively series of imaginary conversations between the real-life courtiers to the Duke of Urbino, his speakers discuss qualities of noble behaviour chiefly discretion, decorum, nonchalance and gracefulness as well as wider questions such as the duties of a good government and the true nature of love. Castigliones narrative power and psychological perception make this guide both an entertaining comedy of manners and a revealing window onto the ideals and preoccupations of the Italian Renaissance at the moment of its greatest splendour.
George Bulls elegant translation captures the variety of tone in Castigliones speakers, from comic interjections to elevated rhetoric. This edition includes an introduction examining Castigliones career in the courts of Urbino and Mantua, a list of the historical characters he portrays and further reading.

In corporate and government bureaucracies, the standard method for making a presentation is to talk about a list of points organized onto slides projected up on the wall. For many years, overhead projectors lit up transparencies, and slide projectors showed high-resolution 35mm slides. Now "slideware" computer programs for presentations are nearly everywhere. Early in the 21st century, several hundred million copies of Microsoft PowerPoint were turning out trillions of slides each year. Alas, slideware often reduces the analytical quality of presentations. In particular, the popular PowerPoint templates (ready-made designs) usually weaken verbal and spatial reasoning, and almost always corrupt statistical analysis. What is the problem with PowerPoint? And how can we improve our presentations? [via]

We will next speak of Liberality. Now this is thought to be the mean state, having for its object-matter Wealth: I mean, the Liberal man is praised not in the circumstances of war, nor in those which constitute the character of perfected self-mastery, nor again in judicial decisions, but in respect of giving and receiving Wealth, chiefly the former. By the term Wealth I mean "all those things whose worth is measured by money." [via]

Herodotus (c480-c425) is 'The Father of History' and his Histories are the first piece of Western historical writing. They are also the most entertaining. Why did Pheidippides run the 26 miles and 385 yards (or 42.195 kilometres) from Marathon to Athens? And what did he do when he got there? Was the Battle of Salamis fought between sausage-sellers? Which is the oldest language in the world? Why did Leonidas and his 300 Spartans spend the morning before the battle of Thermopylae combing their hair? Why did every Babylonian woman have to sit in the Temple of Aphrodite until a man threw a coin into her lap, and how long was she likely to sit there? And what is the best way to kill a crocodile? This wide-ranging history provides the answers to all these fascinating questions as well as providing many fascinating insights into the Ancient World. [via]

[via]

Some men speak and change the world. Sometimes for better, often for worse. As Hitler rallied the Germans for war, and twenty years later - John Kennedy sounded the bugle for the new frontier, their visions, gilded and articulated by the power of their oratory, stirred men's hearts and summoned nations to action. 'History will absolve me, ' declared Fidel Castro. 'Ask not what your country can do for you - ask what you can do for your country, ' said Kennedy. 'I have a dream, ' announced Martin Luther King. 'It is an ideal for which I am prepared to die, ' said Nelson Mandela. Few who were born during the Second World War and who came of age in the sixties will ever forget Kennedy's rousing exhortations or the cries for justice from King and Castro. Their words gave form to dreams and hope to men and women. There are those who claim that the age of oratory is over, that the ubiquitous 'soundbite' and our neglect of the classics and the Bible have destroyed it. Yet wherever misery and oppression exist, and while men and women uphold ideals, oratory still flourishes. Now, in The Penguin Book of Twentieth-century Speeches, Brian MacArthur has collected the great speeches which shaped this century - from Theodore Roosevelt's call to the 'strenuous life' in 1899 to Lyndon Johnson's summons to the Great Society in 1964; from Lloyd George's 'People's Budget' of 1909 to Geoffrey Howe's thrusting of the dagger into Margaret Thatcher in 1990; from Roger Casement in the dock in 1914 to Salman Rushdie in the dock in 1991; from Emmeline Pankhurst to Betty Friedan; from Mahatma Gandhi to Jawaharlal Nehru; and from Lenin, Stalin and Trotsky to Khrushchev and Solzhenitsyn. There are presidents and prime ministers, soldiers and poets, dreamers and destroyers. The Penguin Book of Twentieth-century Speeches is the perfect source book for those engaged in making speeches themselves, for students and for anyone wishing to read precisely what was said during a half-remembered speech. First published in Paris in 1511, "The Praise of Folly" has enjoyed enormous and highly controversial success from the author's lifetime down to our own day. "The Folly" has no rival, except perhaps Thomas More's "Utopia", as the most intense and lively presentation of the literary, social and theological aims and methods of Northern Humanism. Clarence H. Miller's translation of "The Praise of Folly", based on the definitive Latin text, seeks to echo Erasmus' own lively style while retaining the nuances of the original text. In his introduction, Miller places the work in the context of Erasmus as humanist and theologian. In the afterword, William H. Gass playfully considers the meaning, or meanings, of folly and offers fresh insights into one of the great books of Western literature. [via]

Erasmus of Rotterdam (c. 1466 1536) is one of the greatest figures of the Renaissance humanist movement, which abandoned medieval pieties in favour of a rich new vision of the individual's potential. Praise of Folly, written to amuse his friend Sir Thomas More, is Erasmus's best-known work. Its dazzling mixture of fantasy and satire is narrated by a personification of Folly, dressed as a jester, who celebrates youth, pleasure, drunkenness and sexual desire, and goes on to lambast human pretensions, foibles and frailties, to mock theologians and monks and to praise the folly' of simple Christian piety. Erasmus's wit, wordplay and wisdom made the book an instant success, but it also attracted what may have been sales-boosting criticism. The Letter to Maarten van Dorp, which is a defence of his ideas and methods, is also included. [via]

This is Thomas Taylor's adept translation of Plato's Republic. Plato's "crowning achievement of art and philosophy." "The idea that runs through the Republic is that the individual presents almost the same features and qualties as society, on a smaller scale, and in his argument Plato first considers the state and thence makes his deductions as to the individual." "Besides the enduring value of the Republic as a work of art, its philosophical and ethical teaching is of particular interest in the present disordered condition of social and speculative ideas.
