Baptism shows the wonderful picture of it as seen in the New Testament. Smith shows how baptism is not merely a token ritual done for a past experience but he rightly shows how baptism is the moment of confession in the New Testament (Matt. 28:19; Mark 16:15-16; Acts 2:38, 41; 22:16; Romans 10:9-13; 1 Peter 3:21-22). Baptism in water is not powerful without us seeing the grace of God in His Son, Jesus, and then baptism into Christ becomes a lifechanging experience (Romans 6:1-4). [via]

Since the fall development of the great apostasy foretold by Prophets and A postles, numerous attempts at reformation have been made. Three full centuries, carrying with them the destinies of countless millions, have passed into eternity since the Lutheran efibrt to dethrone the Man of Sin. During this period many great and wonderful changes have taken place in the political, literary, moral, and religious conditions of society. That the nations composing the western half of the Roman empire have already been greatly benefited by that efibrt, scientifically, politically, and morally, no person acquainted with either political or ecclesiastical history can reasonably doubt. Time, that great arbiter of human actions, that great revealer of secrets, has long decided that all the reformers of the Papacy have been public benefactors. And thus the Protestant Reformation is proved to have been one of the most splendid eras in the history of the world, and must long be regarded by the philosopher and the philanthropist as one of the most gracious interpositions in behalf of the whole human race. We Americans owe our national privileges and our civil liberties to the Protestant Reformers. They achieved not only an imperishable fame for themselves, but a rich legacy for their posterity. When we contrast the present state of these United States with Spanish A merica, and the condition of the English nation with that of Spain, Portugal, and I taly, we begin to appreciate how much we are indebted to the intelligence, faith, and courage of Martin Luther and his heroic associates in that glorious reformation. He restored the Bible to the world a.d. 1534, and boldly defended its claims against the impious and arrogant pretensions of the haughty and tyrannical See of Rome. But, unfortunately, at his death there A vas no Joshua to lead the people, who rallied under the banner

The Church, the Falling Away, and the Restoration by J.W. Shepherd is an excellent overview of the three subjects in the title. That is this book discusses briefly and largely accurately the doctrines of what the Church should be, how the Church fell away afterwards, and then the attempt at restoring the New Testament church, which is a continuous process. Although, Shepherd focuses on the attempts in the late 1790's to mid 1800's. [via]

The life of Alexander Campbell is told here as a work of fiction, but in its essentials this is a factual book. Every event actually occurred, or had its basis in solid fact; each person lived, and played his role much as is related here. The story does not presume to be a sturdy of Campbell's religious thinking, or an account of the movement to re-establish Christian unity by the elimination of human creeds and the restoration of New Testament Christianity. It is, rather, the portrait of a man whose heart embraced all Christians as brothers; whose mind was open to all truth; whose eyes had seen the vision of the coming of one church. [via]

"Seldom is a book published that reflects such bold independence of thought, such freedom from the fetters of tradition, and such complete objectivity in the study of the Scriptures. It is a book to be reckoned with by all serious students of the Bible."--from the Introduction by Dr. William W. Adams of the Southern Baptist Theological Seminary
Internationally known among Bible scholars for his significant books in the field of biblical theology, Dr. Robert Shank here offers a penetrating study of all the pertinent New Testament Scriptures on the doctrine of perseverance. In doing so, he calls into question the popular doctrine of "eternal [unconditional] security."Are the proof passages used to support eternal security possibly misconstrued? Dr. Shank convincingly argues that the question confronting us is not, Is the believer secure? but rather, What does it mean to be a believer? If apostasy is an actual peril for every Christian, the Scriptural warning passages must be frankly accepted rather than interpreted into irrelevance or circumvented by theological hypothesis. [via]

This pathbreaking book by Richard T. Hughes chronicles the history of Churches of Christ in America from their inception in the early nineteenth century to the 1990s, taking full account of the complexity of their origins, the mainstream of their heritage for almost two hundred years, and their voices of protest and dissent, especially in the twentieth century. From The Critics "Hughes...here provides the definitive history of the Churches of Christ from their beginnings in the Stone-Campbell movement of the early 19th century through the split with the Disciples of Christ at the turn of the century and all the way into the 1990s. Central to this richly detailed and highly readable narrative is Hughes's assertion that this religious movement has evolved from a 19th-century sect into a 20th-century denomination." - Choice "Because of Hughes's elegant writing and his awareness of the social history surrounding the developing denomination, this study transcends mere denominational history and should be read as cultural history. It should remain the standard volume on the subject for years to come." - Publishers Weekly "Hughes provides a clear, balanced account of an American religious movement that has heretofore received insufficient scholarly attention." - Journal of American History "An excellent denominational history of Churches of Christ...Richard T. Hughes, who admirably balances an empathy born of his lifelong membership in the denomination with the standards of a professional historian, labored on this book for a decade and a half, and the result is a study both thoroughly researched and clearly written." - American Historical Review "Hughes is the foremost interpreter today of the Churches of Christ, as this book illustrates...Well written and meticulously documented, this book could serve as the definitive history of this movement for a generation." - Religious Studies Review [via]
