"Hath not a Jew eyes? Hath not a Jew hands, organs, dimensions, senses, affections, passions?" Shylock's impassioned plea in the middle of The Merchant of Venice is one of its most dramatic moments. After the Holocaust, the play has become a battleground for those who argue that the play represents Shakespeare's ultimate statement against ignorance and anti-Semitism in favour of a liberal vision of tolerance and multiculturalism. Other critics have pointed out that the play is, after all, a comedy that ultimately pokes fun at a 16th-century Jew. In fact, the bare outline of the plot suggests that the play is far more complex than either of these characterisations. Bassanio, a feckless young Venetian, asks his wealthy friend, the merchant Antonio, for money to finance a trip to woo the beautiful Portia in Belmont. Reluctant to refuse his friend (to whom he professes intense love), Antonio borrows the money from the Jewish moneylender. If he reneges on the deal, Shylock jokingly demands a pound of his flesh. When all Antonio's ships are lost at sea, Shylock calls in his debt, and the love and laughter of the first scenes of the play threaten to give way to death and tragedy. The final climactic courtroom scene, complete with a cross-dressed Portia, a knife-wielding Shylock, and the debate on "the quality of mercy" is one of the great dramatic moments in Shakespeare. The book connects closely with Astraea and The Rosicrucian Enlightenment and it suggests entirely new and exciting routes into the understanding of Shakespeares attitude to the religious problems of his age. The Occult Philosophy in the Elizabethan Age 0415-220505 A central theme of this book is the history of Christian Cabala, the Christian interpretation of the Jewish mystical tradition. It was believed that when God gave the Law to Moses, he also gave a revelation of the secret meaning of the Law. This esoteric tradition was interpreted in a Christian sense by Pico della Mirandola, the founder of Christian Cabala, with which he associated Hermeticism. Part I discusses the occult philosophy in Renaissance and Reformation, showing its wide influence and reactions against it as magic. Part II traces the influence of the occult philosophy on major Elizabethan writers such as Spenser, Marlowe, Chapman and Shakespeare. A major theme throughout the book is the importance of the expulsion of the Jews from Spain in 1492 in spreading Cabalist notions among Christians. The presence of Jewish influence in the Elizabethan age is hinted at, and the return of the Jews to England in the reign of Charles II is seen as the culmination of trends linking Albion with Jerusalem, even in the Elizabethan age. This is discussed in Part III. The book uses Frances Yatess other works on the Hermetic-Cabalist tradition, whilst attempting a new presentation of Christian Cabala. In her study of the imagery with which the poets express occult philosophy, she draws on her work Astraea E on the Elizabethan imperial reform. When a volume of poetry entitled Shake-speares Sonnets. Neuer before Imprinted appeared in 1609, Shakespeare was forty-five and most of his greatest plays had seen several performances. Some of the sonnets, speaking of the begetting of children, mortality and memory, art, desire and jealousy, are addressed to a beloved youth; others are addressed to a treacherous mistress, a "dark lady." Appended to the sonnets is "A Lover's Complaint, " a beautiful poem in rhyme-royal in which a young woman is overheard lamenting her betrayal by a heartless seducer.
While Shakespeare's biographers continue their investigations, readers may find the "secret" of the sonnets in the poetry itself. In this spirit John Kerrigan provides an illuminating Introduction to the volume as a whole, together with 258 pages of commentaries on the poems, a textual history, and suggestions for further reading.
