Thomas Watson (c. 16201686) was an English, non-conformist, Puritan preacher and author.
From The Introduction:
If the whole Scripture be the feast of the soul, as Ambrose said, then Romans 8 may be a dish at that feast, and with its sweet variety may very much refresh and animate the hearts of Gods people. In the preceding verses the apostle had been wading through the great doctrines of justification and adoption, mysteries so arduous and profound, that without the help and conduct of the Spirit, he might soon have waded beyond his depth. In this verse the apostle touches upon that pleasant string of consolation, WE KNOW THAT ALL THINGS WORK TOGETHER FOR GOOD TO THEM THAT LOVE GOD. Not a word but is weighty; therefore I shall gather up every filing of this gold, that nothing be lost.
In the text there are three general branches:
First, a glorious privilege. All things work for good.
Second, the persons interested in this privilege. They are doubly specified. They are lovers of God, they are called.
Third, the origin and spring of this effectual calling, set down in these words, according to his purpose.
First, the glorious privilege. Here are two things to be considered. 1. The certainty of the privilege - We know. 2. The excellency of the privilege - All things work together for good.

He was once against Christ, and then manywere for him; but now that he was for Christ, all were against him; his being an enemy to Jesus, made others his friends; but when he came to own Jesus, then they became his enemies. And this was the great charge they had against him, that of a great opposer, he wasbecome a great prosessor. Because God had changed him, therefore this enraged them; as if they would be the worse because God had made him better. God had wrought on him by grace, and they seem to envy him the grace of God. "Hie vir invider mihi gratkm Christi." He preached no treason, nor sowed no sedition, only he preached repentance and faith in. Christ and the resurrection; and for this he was called into question. This is the Breviat and sum of Paul's desence and plea for himself, which you sind in the sequel of the chapter, had a different efsect upon his judges. Festus seems to censure him, verse 24. Agrippa seems to be convinced by him, verse 28. The whole bench seems to acquit him verse 30, 31. Festus he thinks-Paul was beside himself. Agrippa he is almost persuaded to mhe such an one as himself. Festus thinks him mad because he did not understand the doc trine of Christ and the resurrection. "Much learning hath made thee mad. Based on Philippians 4:11, I have learned, in whatever state I am therewith to be content, Watson considers the great dishonor done to almighty God by the sin of discontent. The doctrine of Christian contentment is clearly illustrated and profitably applied. The special cases where, through changes in providences, discontentment most commonly arises are examined and preservatives are applied to the soul. [via]

Thomas Watson's Body of Practical Divinity is one of the most precious of the peerless works of the Puritans; and those best acquainted with it prize it most. Watson was one of the most concise, racy, illustrative, and suggestive of those eminent divines who made the Puritan age the Augustan period of evangelical literature. One of the things that is common to true believers is a sense of unworthiness because of sin. We struggle with assurance because we look at ourselves and see excessive, remaining corruption. This may cause us to doubt both ourselves and God's love for us. Here is an insightful handling of these matters by one of the most pastoral of the Puritans.
Love's conclusion is that the great enemy of our souls will do all he can to take our eyes off of our Savior, even if that means an over-preoccupation with sin and self. He asks:
* When are God's people too cast down for sin?
* Why are wicked men not cast down for sin?
* How can God's people keep from becoming too dejected?
Love then gives Scriptural guidelines to recover a sense of God's love. He shows us things that unsettle the soul of a child of God, and gives comfort to those who are convicted. He also sets forth truth that will convict those who may be falsely comforted.
This is important reading for anyone who longs to be more sanctified and satisfied.
There is also another work by Christopher Love at the end of this book called A Treatise of Angels. It was appendixed to the original edition of The Dejected Soul's Cure, so we have kept the two works together. (306 pages) [via]

The Evil of Evils, first printed in 1654, consists of sixty-seven short chapters that expose sin and urge believers to choose affliction over sin. Burroughs organizes his material around seven major thoughts: (1) there is more evil in the least sin than in the greatest affliction; (2) sin and God are contrary to each other; (3) sin is directly against our good; (4) sin opposes all that is good; (5) sin is the evil of all other evils; (6) sin has infinite dimension and character; and (7) sin makes us comfortable with the devil. This treatise is invaluable for sensitizing our consciences to the exceeding sinfulness of sin (cf. Rom. 7:13). [via]

Jeremiah Burroughs (1599-1646) was a member of the Westminster Assembly of Divines, and represented the Independent churchmen. He was full of deep insights into the Word of God, but was also extremely pastoral in his exposition. This title was the first of his writing published. It is based on Numbers 14:24: "Caleb was of another spirit; he followed God fully." The first part of this book deals with what that "other spirit" is - a gracious spirit, synonymous with a regenerate heart. Those with this gracious spirit are true Christians and desire to follow the Lord fully. The second part of this book explains what it means to serve God thoroughly from a spirit activated and motivated by His grace. [via]

These were the final sermons of Jeremiah Burroughs' distinguished career as a pastor! Closing his ministry on the theme of how divisions among Christians in his times might be healed. He was greatly distressed over the frequency of broken fellowship among believers, yet did not opt for shallow answers such as a blanket tolerance of all things, nor compromise with evil. But there are still ways in which believers can strive for unity and peace. Burroughs shows how many things "split" us needlessly and how harmony may be found! "Peace is precious to me. I feel the sweetness of it, and am willing to do what I can to honor it. The public conflicts, contentions, and disturbances in church and commonwealth are very grievous. My aim is peace, which I shall never cease endeavoring and praying for." -- Jeremiah Burroughs, author [via]

All of Thomas Watson's writings and sermons are replete with sound doctrine, practical wisdom, and heart-searching application. His profound spirituality, gripping remarks, practical illustrations, and beauty of expression make him one of the most irresistible of the Puritans.
He was educated at Emmanuel College, Cambridge, where he was noted for remarkably hard study. In 1646 he was commenced a sixteen year pastorate at St. Stephen's Walbrook. In 1651 he was imprisoned briefly with some other ministers for his share in Christopher Love's plot to recall Charles II. He was released on 30th June,1652, and was formally reinstated vicar of St. Stephen's Walbrook. He obtained great fame and popularity as preacher until the Restoration, when he was ejected for nonconformity. Notwithstanding the rigor of the acts against dissenters, Watson continued to exercise his ministry privately as he found opportunity. Upon the Declaration of Indulgence in 1672 he obtained a license for the great hall in Crosby House. After preaching there for several years, his health gave way, and he retired to Barnston in Essex, where he died suddenly while praying in secret. He was buried on 28th July, 1686. [via]

This is Volume 3 of the Works of Edward Reynolds, containing his Meditations on the Holy Sacrament of the Lord's Last Supper, followed by seven sermons on Hosea Chapter 14. The aim in his meditations is that the thoughts and affections God's people should not lie grovelling on earthly things, but should be raised unto high and noble contemplations of the spiritual nature and purpose of the Lord's Supper. He truly shows that Christ crucified is the life and food of a Christian that receives Him by faith [via]

Despite the title, this book is equally informative to those in the pulpit and those in the pew. It was penned when Baxter was unable to attend a meeting of ministers, so he wrote this to them. It covers what it means to take heed to ourselves, to the flock, to spiritual things, to church discipline. He prays for unity and peace in the churches, for greater vigor on the part of everyone in expressing our life in Christ. He proves the importance of family worship and catechism, hope in and expectation of success in all our Christian endeavors, due to the mediatorship of Christ and the indwelling guidance of the Spirit. In this book one discovers the heart of the man. For Baxter was both earnest and insistent upon discovering to a person their spiritual state. He would ask, ''Can you truly say that all the known sins of your past life are the grief of your heart, . . . that you have cast your soul upon Christ alone for the pardon of your sins by His blood? Can you truly say that your heart has turned away from your former sins [so that] you now hate the sins you formerly loved. Can you truly say that you have taken the everlasting enjoyment of God for all your happiness [so that] it has all of your heart, of your love, of your desire and care? . . . Do you daily and principally seek to please God?'' If these questions did not convince him that the person was converted, then he must be made to know how far he fails to measure up to being a Christian. Make him to know how he has despised God. For His view was, ''you must get to his heart, or else you have done nothing.'' He applied this method of catechizing families in his Kidderminster parish, insisting on heads of families learn, then teach their children. There resulted multitudes of conversions during his 14 years there. [via]

Richard Baxter's The Saints' Everlasting Rest (1650) has long been recognized as one of the great classics of Christian devotion, and it is by this book that he is best known. The original work consists of some eight hundred thousand words-a clear example of Baxter's prolific pen-yet in Baxter's own life-time it reached twelve editions! First abridged in 1754 by John Wesley, in the Christian Library, five years later another abridgement was made by Benjamin Fawcett, and innumerable reprints of this have since been issued. The book has also been translated into Welsh, Gaelic, German and French. The purpose of this abridgement, first published in 1962, was to present the work in a form suitable to the modern reader. No change has been made in the text of the passages selected from the original work, and the spirit and language of Baxter have been so preserved that the movement of his thought and style not only remains unimpaired but stands out even more clearly. The strength of Puritan character and life lay in prayer and meditation. In this practice the spirit of prayer was regarded as of first importance and the best form of prayer, for living prayer is the characteristic of genuine spirituality. Yet prayer is also vocal and may therefore on occasions be written. Consequently in the Puritan tradition there are many written prayers and meditations which constitute an important corpus of inspiring devotional literature. Too often ex tempore prayer lacks variety, order and definiteness. The reason for this lies partly in a neglect of due preparation. It is here that the care and scriptural thoroughness which others found necessary in their approach to God may be of help. This book has been prepared not to 'supply' prayers but to prompt and encourage the Christian as he treads the path on which others have gone before. [via]

In this classic book, Christopher Love (a 17th century London preacher) presents practical insights for the Christian who wants to be zealous about fighting against sin. Violence is needed in dealing with sin, and Love focuses on how fervent prayer and hearing the Word are the best weapons with which we can exercise this "holy violence." Lovers of the Puritans will welcome this addition to their libraries and these applications into their hearts and lives. This book will challenge you to read the Word with zeal and to nurture your communion with God in prayer. [via]
