Eugene H. Peterson speaks to Christians who realize the necessity for prayer and yearn for it but who find their prayer unconvincing and unsatisfying. Addressing the causes of this dissatisfaction, Answering God offers guidelines for using the Psalms as dynamic tools for prayer.

Philip Yancey, editor at large and columnist for Christianity Today, follows up his back-to-back bestselling books, What's So Amazing About Grace and The Jesus I Never Knew, with The Bible Jesus Read, an exploration of the significance of the Old Testament to today's Christian.
Given previous book titles--Where Is God When It Hurts, Disappointment with God, and The Gift of Pain--one might jokingly suggest that in the Old Testament Yancey has found his true home. He acknowledges that in studying key sections of the Hebrew Bible (he concentrates on Job, Deuteronomy, The Psalms, Ecclesiastes, and the Prophets) he found himself confronted by the core questions that haunt his Christian faith: Do I matter? Does God care? Why doesn't God act? As always, Yancey explores these central human questions with a style that is marked by directness, humor, and honesty. He writes not as theologian or mystic but as a questioning seeker. Rather than providing simple answers--he in fact says that "by no means did Jesus resolve the problem of pain"--he instead affirms the words of Thomas Merton, which he quotes in his Introduction: "There is ... nothing comfortable about the Bible--until we manage to get so used to it that we make it comfortable for ourselves."
Even as he finds the Old Testament a "companion for my pilgrimage," so is Yancey a companion for his readers, precisely through his willingness to ask --and his courage not to answer--all the hard questions. --Doug Thorpe [via]

Chanting the psalms, or psalmody, is an ancient practice of vital importance in the Christian spiritual tradition. Today many think of it as a discipline that belongs only in monasteriesbut psalmody is a spiritual treasure that is available to anyone who prays. You dont need to be musical or a monk to do it, and it can be enjoyed in church liturgical worship, in groups, or even individually as part of a personal rule of prayer. Cynthia Bourgeault brings the practice into the twenty-first century, providing a history of Christian psalmody as well as an appreciation of its place in contemplative practice today. And she teaches you how to do it as you chant along with her on the accompanying CD in which she demonstrates the basic techniques and easy melodies that anyone can learn. Even if you cant read music, Cynthia says, or if somewhere along the way youve absorbed the message that your voice is no good or you cant sing on pitch, Ill still hope to show you that chanting the psalms is accessible to nearly everyone. The Gold Medallion Award-winning Expositor's Bible Commentary is a major contribution to the study and understanding of the Scriptures. Providing pastors and Bible students with a comprehensive and scholarly tool for the exposition of the Scriptures and the teaching and proclamation of their message, this twelve-volume reference work has become a staple of seminary and college libraries and pastors' studies worldwide. The seventy-eight contributors come from the United States, Canada, England, Scotland, Australia, and New Zealand, and from many denominations, including Anglican, Baptist, Brethren, Methodist, Nazarene, Presbyterian, and Reformed. They represent the best in evangelical scholarship committed to the divine inspiration, complete trustworthiness, and full authority of the Bible. The Expositor's Bible Commentary uses the New International Version for its English text, but also refers freely to other translations and to the original languages. Each book of the Bible has, in addition to its exposition, an introduction, outline, and bibliography. Notes on textual questions and special problems are correlated with the expository units; transliteration and translation of Semitic and Greek words make the more technical notes accessible to readers unacquainted with the biblical languages. In matters where marked differences of opinion exist, commentators, while stating their own convictions, deal fairly and irenically with opposing views. The Psalms possess an enduring fascination for us. For frankness, directness, intensity and intimacy, they are unrivaled in all of Scripture. Somehow the psalmists seem to have anticipated all our awe, desires and frustrations. No wonder Christians have used the Psalms in worship from the earliest times to the present. Yet the Psalms cause us difficulties when we look at them closely. Their poetry is unfamiliar in form. Many images they use are foreign to us today. And the psalmists sometimes express thoughts that seem unworthy of Scripture. Tremper Longman gives us the kind of help we need to overcome the distance between the psalmists' world and ours. He explains the various kinds of psalms, the way they were used in Hebrew worship and their relationship to the rest of the Old Testament. Then he looks at how Christians can appropriate their message and insights today. Turning to the art of Old Testament poetry, he explains the use of parallelism and imagery. Step-by-step suggestions for interpretating the psalms on our own are followed by exercises for further study and reflection. Also included is a helpful guide to commentaries on the Psalms. Here is a book for all those who long to better understand these mirrors of the soul. [via]

The book of Psalms is a favorite of Christians, even though we frequently read it in portions and pieces, hopscotching through the familiar and avoiding the odd, the unpleasant and the difficult. But though the individual psalms arose from an assortment of times, experiences and settings, the book is composed in a deliberate pattern, not as a random anthology. The meaning of the Psalms is discovered in this pattern and order. Michael Wilcock has written a sort of travel guide to the Psalms. In the first volume, he invites us to begin our journey through the gateway of Psalms 1 and 2, with their summons to obedience. In this volume, he ends with Psalm 150, singing its song of praise. In between we pass through all the "yes, buts" of faith--the conflicts, the burdens, the mysteries and the sufferings of life. In these laments and praises, hymns and liturgies, the Bible continues to speak clearly today. [via]

EXPERIENCE THE WISDOM OF THE OLD TESTAMENT IN A NEW WAY.
For many readers, the books of the Old Testament are unfamiliar. The people and events are strange, shrouded in mystery, unapproachable, and old. And yet, the Old Testament books paint a clear, uncompromising picture of the human condition. These writings are a vital part of the ongoing story of God's intimate love-relationship with His people. To overlook them is to overlook God's dealings with humankind.
In The Message: The Old Testament Wisdom Books, Eugene H. Peterson's unique rendering from the original Hebrew breathes new life into the enduring wisdom of the ancient biblical texts. With the same vibrancy, passion, and clarity that he brought to his ground-breaking work on the New Testament, Peterson opens up modern minds to the wonder and wisdom of the Old Testament.
Come, experience the pain and promise of Job as he struggles with tragedy, disappointment, and abandonment. Feel the passionate fury, humble contrition, and joyful exuberance of the Psalms. Discover the practical and enduring wisdom of Proverbs, the soul-searching honesty of Ecclesiasties, and the mystery and romance of the Song of Songs.
If you've ever struggled to read and understand the Old Testament, you'll be surprised and delighted as you experience these old books in a brand-new way. [via]

This two-part volume of heuristic essays and sermons brings together mainline and evangelical scholars and preachers to help preachers to engage the world scripture imagines. The goal of this collection of essays and sermons is two-fold: to help preachers to draw congregations to life as it is uttered and imagined in the Psalter; and to help them to speak from the Psalms of the reality of the transcendent God who, through these texts and their implied narratives, longs to claim central position in our lives. It begins with a lively dialogue that orients readers to the worlds clearly conceived in Psalms. The second half of the book appropriates this orientation with sermons for Christian congregations.Contributors include: Walter Brueggemann, Ronald Cox, John Mark Hicks, J. Clinton McCann Jr., and Paul Scott Wilson. Sermons contributed by Dave Bland, Jeff M. Christian, David Fleer, James Howell, Mark Love, and J. Clinton McCann Jr. [via]

"The Lord is my shepherd, I shall not want." "Thy word is a lamp to my feet." "Search me, O God, and know my heart!" Such phrases leap to mind each time a Christian lifts his heart to God. For many, in fact, Psalms is the richest part of the Old Testament.Derek Kidner provides a fresh and penetrating guide to Psalms 1-72. He analyzes each psalm in depth, comments on interpretive questions and lays bare the universal relevance of the texts. In addition he gives special help on the psalmists' cries for vengeance. Together with its companion volume (Psalms 73-150) this introduction and commentary will inspire and deepen personal worship. [via]

Walter Brueggemann's unique gift of joining historical-exegetical insights to penetrating observations about the traumas and joys of contemporary life both personal and social is here forcefully displayed. Everyone who is familiar with his work knows the power of his speech about "doxological, polemical, political, subversive, evangelical faith: and about the ways such faith is enacted in the praise of ancient Israel and in the church. Readers of this book will find fresh insight into: the Psalms as prayer and praise the categories of the Psalms the social context in which psalms were prayed and sung the theology of the Psalms the dialogical character of the Psalms justice and injustice in the Psalms the study and "use" of the Psalms by the church praise as an act of basic trust and abandonment the impossible wonders of God's activity that overturn conventional ways of thinking and acting [via]
