Eher widerwillig recherchiert der Journalist und Ich-Erzähler im Internet, tummelt sich in den abstrusen Chatrooms der Neonazis, beleuchtet die Biografien des Schweizer NS-Landesgruppenführers Wilhelm Gustloff, seines jüdischen Attentäters David Frankfurter und des U-Bootkommandanten der sowjetischen Rotbannerflotte Alexander Marinesko -- und versucht sich schließlich im Erzählprozess ganz "an Bord der 'Gustloff' zu denken", um die tödliche Katastrophe vor den Augen seiner Leser wieder lebendig werden zu lassen. Dabei fördert er ein menschliches Drama zu Tage, das bis in unsere Gegenwart hineingreift und nicht zuletzt seine eigene Familie betrifft.
In Katz und Maus war die durch das Dickicht der Wiesen streifende Katze Metapher eines vorsichtig neugierigen, "lauernden" und ständig die Richtung wechselnden Erzählens. In Grass' neuer Novelle ist es der seitliche, mögliche Feinde täuschende Gang des Krebses, der die stetig zwischen Gestern und Heute wechselnde Erzählperspektive symbolisiert und dem großartigen schmalen Band seinen Namen gab.
