The spots are all aesthetically elegant, vibrant, and cutting-edge in terms of design and typography and are even a pleasure to work with.
The author is first and foremost a designer. The book demonstrates the importance of conceptualizing the clients' needs and how to preplan and storyboard the projects. It documents the motivations behind even the smallest design decisions, making this book valuable as a teaching tool and not just a grab bag of hotshot how-tos. Each project takes time, but even beginners can re-create the Flash movies. The steps are clearly explained and illustrated with screen shots. The artwork, however, is not provided. To work along with the deconstructions, readers will have to create similar art, film, and sound files.
Those aware of Hillman Curtis's work will also be familiar with that of the book's designer, Todd Purgason of Juxt Interactive (juxtinteractive.com). The layout for Flash Web Design evokes the layered, motion-through-structure style of Purgason's Web design (lundstromarch.com) and makes one wish the book also existed in movie format. Just how interesting packets turn out to be is revealed in Linux Firewalls, Robert L. Zeigler's sober, agile, and subtle text. Narrowing consideration to threats faced by small networks from external sources, Zeigler and his editors introduce security by delivering prerequisite tutorials on packet architecture and normal network-based client/server daemon-to-daemon communications. Nonthreatening daemon-to-daemon communication is part of the regular operation of a networked POSIX-compliant operating system (like Linux or Windows NT), but the incessant background chatter makes finding hostile intrusions a search for sometimes subtle irregularities in a high throughput environment.
In fact, bombardment of networks with useless packets can create diversions for more pernicious attacks. Distinguishing the good packets from the potentially hostile or merely useless packets requires levels of filtering criteria that depend on the specifics of the network environment. Zeigler sorts out all of these issues and outlines practical network administration strategies for packet filtering.
Linux Firewalls is a how-to for the home Linux box, including the creating and debugging firewall rules for home LANs and network interfaces. For larger LAN users, Zeigler describes intrusion logging; configurations based on varying levels of trust; and the how, why, and when of reporting intrusions to network authorities.
In the wrong hands, firewall reports are either hyped-up cloak-and-dagger sensationalism or monotonous treatises in bitwise accounting. Zeigler strikes a middle ground with a book fit for members of the Linux community who are curious about what is happening over their TCP/IP connections. Rizzo breaks collaborative apps into five categories: messaging, tracking, workflow, real-time and knowledge management; though an app may have elements from each. Naturally, there are gotchas even in MS programming paradise. For example, Rizzo explains how Outlook 2000 implements a cut down IE for HTML display, but to fully implement security in frames you have to force it to use IE itself--which then means you can't access some of Outlook's enhancements.
ASP features large, for example, to convert Outlook forms to HTML. This throws up more gotchas as Outlook's forms have more features than are available in HTML. There's a discussion of the new Digital Dashboards in Chapter 11 which use ActiveX objects, details on new and improved features of Exchange 5.5, such as the Event Scripting Agent and naturally the obligatory chapter on XML and XSL. But this is a book about using the results of such technologies rather than programming with them.
Rizzo had access to the Outlook and Exchange developers so the book feels authoritative, with example apps and code, all of it on the accompanying CD. But Microsoft's hand lies humourless and heavy. In places the book reads more like a press release. Still, anyone building collaborative apps using Outlook and Exchange will benefit from this book, just don't count the evangelising. -- Steve Patient [via]
