"[A]n eminently readable text, done clearly and accurately... it gives as good an idea as a translation can of the complexity and subtlety of Chrétiens originals.... The text is provided by a translator who understands the spirit as well as the letter of the original and renders it with style.... [T]his translation should attract a wide audience of students and Arthurian enthusiasts." Speculum
"[A] significant contribution to the field of medieval studies [and] a pleasure to read." Library Journal
"These are, above all, stories of courtly love and of knights tested in their devotion to chivalric ideals (with passion and duty often at odds); but they are also thrilling wonder stories of giants, wild men, tame lions, razor-sharp bridges and visits to the Other World." Washington Post Book World
"This tastefully produced book will be the standard general translation for many years to come." Choice
This new translation brings to life for a new generation of readers the stories of King Arthur, Lancelot, Guinevere, Gawain, Perceval, Yvain, and the other "knights and ladies" of Chrétien de Troyes famous romances.

› Find signed collectible books: 'For the Voice'
For the Voice, first published in 1923, has long been recognized as one of the finest achievements of Russian avant-garde bookmaking, a tradition in which poets and artists collaborated to create books that attained the status of art objects. By any reckoning, For the Voice is a landmark event in the history of modern graphic design. The book was inspired by the "new optics," where ideas are given form through printed letters, turning them into pictorial signs, and by "words that are seen and not heard," as Lissitzky wrote.
This three-volume slipcased set consists of a facsimile volume that is faithful to the original in size, color, weight, and paper quality; a translation by Peter France of the original text; and Voices of Revolution, a collection of critical essays that analyze the character and significance of the original publication and describe the inner workings of the poet's "construction in sound" complemented by the designer's "constructions for the eye." The History of King Richard the Third is Thomas Mores English masterpiece. With the help of Shakespeare, whose Richard the Third took Mores work as its principal model, the History determined the historical reputation of an English king and spawned a seemingly endless controversy about the justness of that reputation.
George M. Logan has produced a scholarly yet accessible edition of the History, designed to make Mores exhilarating work fully accessible to 21st-century readers. Mores text is presented here with modern English spelling and punctuation, and with full annotation of linguistic difficulties and the historical background. The text is preceded by a general introduction, a chronology, and suggestions for further reading. An appendix reprints passages from key sources and analogues, enabling the reader to see how More worked with his English sources and classical models, and finally how Shakespeare worked with More.

Until now little of China's massive literary output of the last thirty years has been available to American readers. This landmark volume presents a generous sampling in translation of the literature written in the PRC from 1949 to the present. Included here are more than 200 selections: poems, stories, essays, a hsiang-sheng (comic dialogue), and excerpts from novels, plays, movie scripts, and an opera. Among the major writers represented are Ting Ling and Hao Jan (fiction); Ai Ch'ing and Feng Ching-yüan (poetry); T'ien Han and Yang Han-sheng (drama); and Teng T'o and Chou Yang (essays).
Literature of the People's Republic of China offers a fascinating glimpse into Chinese life and demonstrates the struggle of creative writers to be true both to their art and to their country's revolution.

"Co-winner of the prestigious Poets' Prize for his collection "To the Bone", Sydney Lea is known for his mastery of the narrative style and his clear and unwavering vision of the natural world and humanity's place in it. His latest work, "Pursuit of a Wound", is marked by this acuity and by his uncanny ear for language as well as his willingness to speak for the unlucky and the dispossessed. Delving in equal measure into the flinty northern New England landscape and the exiled souls of ordinary people, "Pursuit of a Wound" moves beyond Lea's previous work to explore new poetic strategies, including some that approach prose poetry. Combining a free-ranging sensibility akin to Whitman's with a keen attention to verse's formal possibilities, this collection of twenty-eight new poems evokes a beautiful and threatened place and ratifies Lea's status as heir-apparent to Robert Frost." "The theory of poetic semiotics put forward here was first sketched out in a 1971 paper of mine on what makes a literary sentence literary. My previous work had concentrated upon the surface structures of poetic discourse, upon what the reader recognizes and identifies as style...The theoretical aims of this book make it applicable." - from the book's preface [via]
