A legend in his lifetime, Lord Byron was the dominant influence on the Romantic movement. The text of this edition, which contains nearly all of Byron's published poems together with the poet's own Notes, was first published in The Oxford Poets in 1896, and has been reprinted numerous times. Fredrick Page's text has been revised by John Jump, who has made a number of substantive corrections, and added to Don Juan the fragment of a seventeenth canto that was previously unavailable. [via]

William Blake is a poet without parallel, who remains a source of wisdom and inspiration to countless individuals throughout the world.
This selection was commissioned in 1905 by the firm of George Routledge from W.B. Yeats, who had previously been one of the pioneer editors of Blake's prophetic books. Yeats, one of the few poets whose work could be compared with that of Blake, prepared a unique selection of his poetic and prose writings. There is no better way to encounter the work of one poetic genius than as it is presented by another, and Yeats understood Blake in a way few others did.

Poetry. Rainer Maria Rilke, along with Yeats, Mandelstam, and Pessoa, is regarded as one of the great European poets of his century, and by many as the outstanding German poet between Holderlin and Celan. DUINO ELEGIES is Rilke's masterpiece. This cycle of poems, language grasped at its speech-seed, was composed in a three-week blaze of creative energy in 1922, the annus mirabilis which saw the first publication of The Wasteland, Ulysses, and Pound's early Cantos. Rilke, the Santa Claus of loneliness, in Auden's cheeky phrase, said that the elegies were dictated to him, entrusted to him. Of all English versions of Rilke's elegaic symphony, these by the German scholar and poet Patrick Bridgwater may well incarnate the deepest reconciliation of that necessarily warring menage a trois: beauty, truth, and fidelity. Among the major works included are the complete texts of Milton's "Paradise Lost" and Mary Shelley's "Frankenstein"; Shakespeare's "Twelfth Night"; Beckett's tragicomic "Endgame"; and Achebe's "Things Fall Apart". The 7th edition features works by 60 women writers, 21 writers new to the "Norton Anthology", 20 represented with additional selections or reselected works. Fourteen new and expanded thematic clusters gather short texts that illuminate cultural, historical, and literary concerns within each period. Examining 20th-century literature in English, this edition reflects the global reach of literature in English with ten new authors - Jean Rhys, Chinua Achebe, Alice Munro, V. S. Naipaul, Anita Desai, Les Murray, Salman Rushdie, J. M. Coetzee, Eavan Boland, and Paul Muldoon. "The Persistence of English", a new essay by Geoffrey Nunberg, Stanford University and Xerox Palo Alto Research Center, provides a lively exploration of the English language - its emergence and spread, and its apparent "triumph" as a world language. Visual materials are included from several periods - Hogarth's satiric "Marriage A-la-Mode", engravings by Blake, and illustrations by Dante Gabriel Rossetti. Period introductions, author headnotes, annotations, and bibliographies have been thoroughly revised, many completely rewritten, for the 7th Edition. New pedagogical features include timelines for each period and revised endpaper maps. The text is accompanied by 2 audio CDs. [via]

This volume is the first to present Wordsworth's great poem in all three of its forms. It reprints, on facing pages, the version of The Prelude that was completed in 1805, together with the much-revised work published after the poets death in 1850. In addition, the editors include the two-part version of the poem, composed in 1798-99. Each of these poems possesses distinctive qualities and values; to read them together provides an incomparable chance to observe a great poet composing and re-composing, throughout a long life, his major work.
There are no fewer than seventeen manuscripts of The Prelude in the Wordsworth library at Grasmere. Working with these materials, the editors have prepared an accurate reading version of 1799 and have newly edited from manuscripts the texts of 1805 and 1850thus freeing the latter poem from the unwarranted alterations made by Wordsworth's literary executors. The editors also provide a text of MS. JJ (Wordsworth's earliest drafts for parts of The Prelude) as well as transcriptions of other important passages in manuscript which Wordsworth failed to include in any fair copy of his poem. The texts are fully annotated, and the notes for all three versions of The Prelude are arranged so that each version may be read independently. The editors provide a concise history of the texts and describe the principles by which each has been transcribed from the manuscripts.More editions of The Prelude, 1799, 1805, 1850: Authoritative Texts, Context and Reception, Recent Critical Essays:

The appearance in 1926 of Langston Hughes's first volume of poems, The Weary Blues, announced the arrival on the American literary scene not only of a new voice and tone, but also of a new sort of voice. Close to the rhythms of Negro speech and song, these apparently artless verses -- which, of course, in reality proclaim a poet of sophistication and keen sensibility -- brought to many readers throughout the English-speaking world a new enjoyment of the multifarious voices of Harlem and the other places where Negroes live in large numbers. Since The Weary Blues, Langston Hughes -- to mention only his verse -- has published Fine Clothes to the Jew (1927), The Dream Keeper (1932), Shakespeare in Harlem (1942), Fields of Wonder (1947), One Way Ticket (1949), Montage of a Dream Deferred (1951), Ask Your Mama (1961), and The Panther and the Lash (1967).
Selected Poems of Langston Hughes represents Langston Hughes's own decisions as to which of his poems he most wanted to preserve and reprint. It contains not only selections from his published books (including private publication), but also poems that either had never been published before or had appeared only in periodicals.
Here are reflected the rhythms of jazz, the blues, and spirituals. Arna Bontemps has called Langston Hughes the "original jazz poet," and it is worth noting that Hughes in his last years often read his poetry to jazz accompaniment. But there is more in these poems than jazz, its rhythms and its significance. Here, too, are the travail, the joys and accomplishments, the wide-eyed wonder and bitter realizations of a transplanted race. Here, most important of all, are the affirmations and speech of a true poet. Primarily a lyricist, Langston Hughes learned how to speak with intensity of the things that mattered to him, the human factors that he understood and appreciated, whether in praise, in condemnation, or in sheer song.
