The Iliad (Ancient Greek ?????, Ilias) is, together with the Odyssey, one of two ancient Greek epic poems attributed to Homer, a supposedly blind Ionian poet. The epics are considered by most modern scholars to be the oldest literature in the Greek language. The Iliad concerns events during the tenth and final year in the siege of the city of Ilion, or Troy, by the Greeks. The Odyssey (Greek: ????????, Odusseia)is commonly dated circa 800 to 600 BC. The poem is, in part, a sequel to Homer's Iliad and mainly concerns the events that befall the Greek hero Odysseus (or Ulysses) in his long journeys after the fall of Troy and when he at last returns to his native land of Ithaca. Hawai'i Nei brings together three plays by one of Hawai'i's finest playwrights. A compassionate portrait of early nineteenth-century Hawai'i, "The Conversion of Ka'ahumanu" charts the lives of five women during the traumatic, transforming events that followed Western contact. Set in post-World War II Hawai'i, "Emmalehua" tells the story of a young Hawaiian woman struggling to preserve a cherished cultural heritage in a world eager to forget the past and embrace the new American dream. Through history, humor, and a whodunnit plot, the past and present collide in "Ola Na Iwi," which explores the issues surrounding the treatment of indigenous human remains.
"Kneubuhl's work respresents the very best of indigenous theatre. Collectively, these three plays reveal complex and faschinating insights into the author's culture, its history, and its contemporary articulations. Each play is written with verve and wit and has a sure sense of theatricality." --- Helen Gilbert, University of Queensland [via]

(Applause Books). QED is a seductive mix of science, human affections, moral courage and comic eccentricity... not to be missed." John Simon, New York Magazine The play itself is a kind of proof, dramatically illustrating how a man who happens to be a genius elegantly and movingly works through the human problem of how to face the end of his life." Nancy Franklin, The New Yorker With a moving and powerful introduction from Alan Alda. Who knew that quantum electrodynamics could make for a dramatic read? In the hands of the late, great physicist Richard Feynman, it does. Feynman's theory of QED is just one of the many topics the playwright Peter Parnell explores in this nearly-one-man show, a recent Broadway triumph for star Alan Alda as Feynman. Set in Feynman's office on the weekend of his realization that he has terminal cancer, this play is an intellectual tour-de-force that captures the unique, hilarious, and puckish genius that Feynman was. From his work on the Manhattan Project to the death of his beloved first wife, from his mission to reconstruct the Challenger space shuttle tragedy to his Nobel-prize winning physics ideas, the resume of Feynman's life is fascinating. But Parnell gives us more, letting fill in the details of his life. When he reads a letter he wrote to his wife after her death, or flirts with a student, or chillingly recalls walking around Manhattan calculating the damage an atomic bomb could do, we grow to love the man behind the scientist. And we read in fascination as he puzzles out the problem of his own death. Combining the current interest in science and math in the entertainment world with one of the most entertaining scientists in U.S. history, QED is a tour-de-force. [via]

Thanks to this delightful, reader-friendly gem, at long last, the Bard is made accessible to all-even to he or she who hath never dug a line of Shakespeare before.
Starting with the controversy over whether the genius who wrote the plays was Shakespeare or one of his rivals, the author puts the Bard in the context of Elizabethan life and theater. His personas as actor, businessman, playwright, and poet are touched upon, followed by selections from his greatest plays and sonnets. A roundup of miscellaneous Bardean tidbits, Elizabethan insults, and other Shakespearean lore completes the irreverent, entertaining, yet informative text. [via]

In this heartrending and inspiring novel set against the gorgeous, vast landscape of South Africa under apartheid, award-winning playwright Pamela Gien tells the story of two familiesone black, one whiteseparated by racism, connected by love.
Even at the age of six, lively, inquisitive Elizabeth Grace senses shes a child of privilege, a lucky fish. Soothing her worries by raiding the sugar box, she scampers up into the sheltering arms of the lilac-blooming syringa tree growing behind the familys suburban Johannesburg home.
Lizzies closest ally and greatest love is her Xhosa nanny, Salamina. Deeper and more elemental than any traditional friendship, their fierce devotion to each other is charged and complicated by Lizzies mother, who suffers from creeping melancholy, by the stresses of her fathers medical practice, which is segregated by law, and by the violence, injustice, and intoxicating beauty of their country.
In the social and racial upheavals of the 1960s, Lizzies eyes open to the terror and inhumanity that paralyze all the nations culturesXhosa, Zulu, Jew, English, Boer. Pass laws requiring blacks to carry permission papers for white areas and stringent curfews have briefly created an orderly statebut an anxious one. Yet Lizzies home harbors its own set of rules, with hushed midnight gatherings, clandestine transactions, and the girls special task of protecting Salaminas newborn childa secret that, because of the new rules, must never be mentioned outside the walls of the house.
As the months pass, the contagious spirit of change sends those once underground into the streets to challenge the ruling authority. And when this unrest reaches a social and personal climax, the unthinkable will happen and forever change Lizzies view of the world.
When The Syringa Tree opened off-Broadway in 2001, theater critics and audiences alike embraced the play, and it won many awards. Pamela Gien has superbly deepened the story in this new novel, giving a personal voice to the horrors and hopes of her homeland. Written with lyricism, passion, and life-affirming redemption, this compelling story shows the healing of the heart of a young woman and the soul of a sundered nation.
Praise:
A gripping first novel in the tradition of such great southern African writers as Nadine Gordimer and Doris Lessing. Spare beautiful prose builds to an unforgettable climax.
--BOOKLIST, starred review
Pamela Gien's novel is impressively affecting. She is a wonder. The Syringa Tree as a play was uniquely moving, but Gien has taken it beyond its walls, and given us remarkable writing that stands freely as a deeply affecting and fresh telling of this classic story. -Lillian Ross
The story of a young girl and her cherished caretaker is the
story of a heartbroken country. Pamela Gien brings South Africa to vivid life, illuminating how the bonds of love are stronger than the forces of history. I read the end of the book through tears.
-Amanda Eyre Ward, author of How to Be Lost
This book plunges us inside the skin of humanity and is suffused with a rare understanding. The Syringa Tree reminds us that every life can be a dropand a great deal morein the sea of history.
-Scott Simon, NPR, author of Pretty Birds and Home and Away
Evocative and impassioned. Gien captures perfectly the voice of the child Elizabeth and the grown woman she becomes. --Baltimore Sun, Summer List
Highly recommended...Gien here illuminates the shameful history of a country, by highlighting the juxtaposition of race, anti-Semitism, and class privilege. -Library Journal
A spare, yet poetic account that steadily works its magic on the reader as both a portrait of individuals, and a country, in the tumultuous time of apartheid. --Seattle Post-Intelligencer
Gien...renders South Africa...as a virtual paradise, which
painfully contrasts with the blood spilled on its soil. Shes an expressive, fluent writer whose best passages are lyrical yet intimate, bringing you right into the room. --Seattle Weekly
A gorgeous, hopeful, heartrending novel. . . . This uncommonly moving, deeply humane novel nearly dances in a reader's hands with the rhythms and the colors, the complicatedness and the inimitability of southern Africa."--O The Oprah Magazine [via]

Here the excitement, adventure, romance and glory of Vergil's classic emerge from a vigorous style and evocative prose.
Book Description
One of the pillars of Western literary tradition, Vergil s Aeneid is also a terrific read: the story of a man whose city is destroyed in war, and of his journey to find his place in destiny. This epic has it all: adventures on the high seas, passion, battles, monsters, magic, meddling gods, and struggles that test the moral fiber of both men and women. The Aeneid has been deemed one of the most influential poems in world literature. And yet, a translation with wide appeal has been lacking until now. G. B. Cobbold joined with Bolchazy-Carducci Publishers to produce an Aeneid that gives the epic its due as the rousing and moving story that it is, while remaining true to the spirit of the Latin original. This an Aeneid like no other: a fresh, page-turning rendition that reads like a novel, but has the vividness of poetic language, with attractive and accessible reader aids. Sure to become a prized standard!
