› Find signed collectible books: 'Blues Faces: A Portrait of the Blues'
For more than fifty years the blues and the singers who sang them were nearly forgotten. Not until Sam Charters published his seminal The Country Blues in 1959 (still in print more than forty years later) did a new wave of interest in this great American music form take root. In the blues boom of the 1960s and '70s, his articles, books, research, field recordings, and studio productions featuring dozens of familiar as well as unsung musicians, brought the blues to thousands of listeners. He traveled to Africa to document blues roots there, and in the 1980s he hung his recording hat in Louisiana, where he produced blues in the Cajun and Zydeco style, winning a Grammy for a 1983 album with Clifton Weaver. If this musical form has a patron saint, then Sam Charters is his name.
As new audiences were learning about the blues through his books and records they were also seeing the blues through the photos of his wife Ann Charters. Although better known today as a Beat scholar, biographer of Jack Kerouac, and anthologist of short fiction, she was for years on the other side of the microphones with her camera. This book is a collection of her blues portraits, along with some by her husband of singers she didn't have a chance to meet. The photographs were used on record covers, on book jackets, and to illustrate books and articles. Some have never before been published. Blues Faces gathers this rich harvest for the first time. Samuel Charters has added a warmly personal commentary that complements the visual images and completes this fascinating portrait of a vital musical style. [via]

How This Book Began
After 2,000 Years, No Question Is Going To Bring Christianity Crashing.
With cryptic statements like this, my husband, Paul, found his niche in university settings talking to students about Christianity.
Paul's first assignment as a new staff member with InterVarsity Christian Fellowship was to lead a dinner discussion at the University of Kansas. Fearfully he approached the designated 8Greeke house for a 6 p.m. dinner where he would give a fifteen-minute introductory talk followed by questions from the men. His fears were magnified because it was a scholarship hall=really brainy students. Further, it was a Jewish scholarship hall! He later described his prayer that day as he walked to the door of the fraternity house:
"Lord, you know I always stub my toe when I try to explain Christian basics clearly to people with questions. Why must I begin in a residence reserved for the smartest students? They'll tear me apart limb from limb. I'll not live the night out!"
To his amazement, one young man had his life turned around that night by the new thought that God offered him a brand-new life and power to live it. He decided to become a Christian.
Encouraged by the good response from this one man, Paul continued. He traveled from campus to campus, leading dorm and fraternity sessions and tirelessly spending hours talking one-on-one with students. From hundreds of campuses on five continents he sought to capture the attention of the bored, the intellectual, the athletic. He used clipped questions to jog the thinking and help the listeners examine their present worldviews, ranging from scientific determinism to placid relativism. He sprinkled in a few "sure-fire" jokes and other good humor. He'd even say, "You exercised blind faith if you ate in a restaurant today." "Believing something doesn't make it true; refusing to believe it doesn't make it false." "Many people who say they don't believe the Bible have actually never read it."
In twenty-five years of lecturing, Paul found that regardless of the group there were twelve commonly asked questions. "They are predictable," he said. "If we think through the answers to the common questions we hear, we'll know the answers to the right ones. Right answers to the wrong questions aren't of much help!" From his own study of the Bible and research of biblical scholars, he framed his answers. That's how Know Why You Believe was born.
The message of this newly edited book is entirely Paul's. I have added some exciting new illustrations from the specialized fields of archaeology and science. In each area, I have followed the capsulized biblical basics, which are Paul's intentional focus. The Bible has been shown to be stalwart and trustworthy in the light of any challenge. As Paul said, "No one will think up a question that will bring Christianity crashing even after 2,000 years."
It has been twenty-four years since the day when the dread news came of Paul's death in an automobile accident. I am awed that God has continued to use these answers. Paul would say, "These are God's thoughts; the light comes from Him." The many stories I continue to hear of God using these words affirm the extraordinary impact of God's truth, which we all seek.
Just recently I gave a copy of this book to a searching young Sikh woman. After she and her husband visited with me several times in my living room she told me, "This book answered all my questions." She became a fully devoted follower of Jesus Christ=additionally, a sterling wife and mother. Amazing grace.

Few people would associate the island paradise of Hawaii with protest, but there is a long island tradition of speaking out against civil and social injustices, political wrongs and environmental issues. In Kûç: Thirty Years of Land Struggle in Hawaii, photographer Ed Greevy has documented social and political events concerning eviction struggles and the development of the Hawaiian Sovereignty movement from 1971 to the present. Haunani-Kay Trask, an activist and sovereignty leader, provides the words to describe the events. Kûç chronicles the unsung heroes who organized and participated in events such as Save Our Surf, Kalama Valley, Waiahole and Waikane valleys, Niumalu and Nawiliwili, Chinatown, Heeia, Stop H-3 Freeway, Makua, Mokauea Island, Sand Island, Protect Kahoolawe Ohana, Stop All Evictions, Anti-Apartheid, and Anti-war in Iraq. Charles Peterson entered the jazz world of New York as a guitarist but made his true contribution documenting an era and its most notable performers. Peterson took up the camera in the mid 1930s and transformed himself from a performer on stage to a visual recorder and observer of the stage. Creating a photographic style that combines artistic sensibility and technical skill, he became a preeminent New York jazz photographer of the pre-bebop, small combos and Big Band era. A deep love of jazz led Peterson to the legendary clubs of Harlem, 52nd Street, and Greenwich Village, concert halls and ballrooms, jam sessions, recording studios, backstage get-togethers, and private parties. As a jazz scene insider, Peterson had access to all of these formal and informal venues. Among the countless subjects he enshrined on film are Louis Armstrong, Billie Holiday, Duke Ellington, Benny Goodman, Zutty Singleton, Fats Waller, Mildred Bailey, Cab Calloway, Pee Wee Russell, Lester Young, and Jack Teagarden. Peterson's photographs expose a startling contrast between integrated bandstands and audiences and the segregated world, as well as reveal the determination of those who refused to be confined by such oppressive conventions. They depict musicianship and camaraderie, dancing, and technical innovation, as well as the harsh contrast of an all too pervasive alcoholism that interrupted the lives of many in that New York scene. W. Royal Stokes provides commentary, historical and biographical information, and lively anecdotes that connect the musicians featured in Peterson's photographs to each other and to the music within the social world of jazz. Don Peterson restored the 229 photographs included here from his father's original negatives. More than half have never been published, while many others have not been seen in print since the 1940s. This striking collection represents a historical document of a city and an era that brought the great jazz and swing musicians of the time to the height of success and solidified their reputations. Author note: W. Royal Stokes, editor of "Jazz Notes", has served as Jazz Critic for "The Washington Post" and as editor of "Jazz Times". He is also the author of "The Jazz Scene: An Informal History From New Orleans to 1990". Don Peterson, son of Charles Peterson, is a freelance motion picture and television script writer. [via]
