Ingeniously crafted artists' books are not merely a set format of pages held together by a binding; they are individual expressions, unique creative statements that may take many visual forms. The unique creations in The Art and Craft of Handmade Books, by Shereen LaPlantz, generally begin with some traditional bookmaking approaches (sewn bindings, accordion-fold variations, Coptic stitch methods) but take these formal techniques to new heights with personalized themes and unusual touches, like exploding pages or the vignettes of a tunnel book.
Step-by-step instructions, discussions of design considerations, and suggestions for what the books might contain all provide wonderful guidance for anyone looking to expand their aesthetic horizons through the medium of handmade books. In addition, many gallery pages highlight other artists' extraordinary book creations. --Amy Handy [via]

FROM THE WORLD FAMOUS ROYAL SHAKESPEARE COMPANY, THE FIRST AUTHORITATIVE, MODERNIZED, AND CORRECTED EDITION OF SHAKESPEARES FIRST FOLIO IN THREE CENTURIES.
Skillfully assembled by Shakespeares fellow actors in 1623, the First Folio was the original Complete Works. It is arguably the most important literary work in the English language. But starting with Nicholas Rowe in 1709 and continuing to the present day, Shakespeare editors have mixed Folio and Quarto texts, gradually corrupting the original Complete Works with errors and conflated textual variations.
Now Jonathan Bate and Eric Rasmussen, two of todays most accomplished Shakespearean scholars, have edited the First Folio as a complete book, resulting in a definitive Complete Works for the twenty-first century.
Combining innovative scholarship with brilliant commentary and textual analysis that emphasizes performance history and values, this landmark edition will be indispensable to students, theater professionals, and general readers alike.

Since the 1950s, our countrys greatest libraries have, as a matter of common practice, dismantled their collections of original bound newspapers and so-called brittle books, replacing them with microfilmed copies. The marketing of the brittle-paper crisis and the real motives behind it are the subject of this passionately argued book, in which Nicholson Barker pleads the case for saving our recorded heritage in its original form while telling the story of how and why our greatest research libraries betrayed the public trust by auctioning off or pulping irreplaceable collections. The players include the Library of Congress, the CIA, NASA, microfilm lobbyists, newspaper dealers, and a colorful array of librarians and digital futurists, as well as Baker himself who eventually discovers that the only way to save one important newspaper is to buy it. Double Fold is an intense, brilliantly worded narrative that is sure to provoke discussion and controversy. [via]

Another example of Shakespeare's comic fascination with the battle between and misunderstanding of the sexes, Love's Labour's Lost is a difficult play to read, but one which is extremely effective on stage. The Play opens with King Ferdinand of Navarre and his courtiers taking a vow of study and sexual abstinence for a period of three years. However, their vows are soon placed under strain with the arrival of the Princess of France and her ladies in waiting. The inevitable happens, and the different couples attempt to surreptitiously communicate, causing much hilarious confusion and embarrassment in the process. Shakespeare deploys every farcical element in the book, including impersonation, wrongly delivered letters, outrageous puns and word play, fights, drunkenness and masquerades, as Ferdinand's entourage soon learn that rather than running from women to books, it is in fact the opposite sex that "are the books, the arts, the academes/That show, contain, and nourish all the world". However, one of the most interesting aspects of the play is that it does not end with everyone marrying and living happily ever after. The women give as good as they get from the men, and in the end turn the tables in extremely interesting ways. One of Shakespeare's most linguistically challenging, but also intelligent comedies. --Jerry Brotton [via]

In these days of PalmPilots, pagers, hastily typed e-mail messages, and cars equipped with fax machines, the art of hand-writing a letter has morphed into something rather quaint, if not downright Victorian. The folks at Kate's Paperie, a sumptuous, even decadent paper and writing-supply store with three Manhattan locations, seek to remedy this situation with Paperie: The Art of Writing and Wrapping with Paper. It's a reference for creative touches that no party planner, wedding coordinator, gracious businessperson, or love-letter writer ought to go without.
Paperie begins with an enthralling, lavishly illustrated tour through the histories of the written word; the art of papermaking (from China's first paper 2,000 years ago, through the Egyptian development of papyrus); to printmaking, including the background of the watermark, business card, social stationery, penny postcard, and letter-sealing wax; and developments of calligraphy, embossing, and engraving. This is a book that appeals to the Martha in all of us: the artful design and elegant prose, from the textured tangerine endpapers to step-by-step directions for artful gift-wrapping, will likely inspire you to excitedly order some custom-engraved Crane's stationery or marbelized Japanese sheets at the very least.
Etiquette enthusiasts will appreciate the explanations of the various stationery elements, from monarch notes to "at home" cards. The scores of full-color photos of Crane's stationery; vellum, origami, kraft, and tissue papers; raffia from Madagascar; and gorgeous silk ribbons (some of which are so wide that visitors to the store purchase by the yard to wear as scarves!) beg for creative projects and heartfelt letter-writing. The staff at Paperie honor the ceremonial aspects of paper, hint that other cultures could benefit from treating it as a sacred thing as Asians do, and suggest dozens of ways for turning an everyday memo, thank-you note, or gift into something truly artful and memorable. --Erica Jorgensen [via]

The social revolution for women's rights has made great progress in recent years. But how many casual observers - or advocates, for that matter - are aware that the roots of this movement extend deep into Western history?
Even before launching the great campaign to attain universal suffrage, strong female voices spoke in favor of the social, political, educational, and economic rights of women. A Vindication of the Rights of Women, published in the late eighteenth century, is truly a classic in this venerable tradition. Railing against the stubborn social forces that confined women to an inferior station in the community, Mary Wollstonecraft declares war on the prevailing attitudes and customs that prevent women from realizing their individual potential. Vito Corleone is the most respected Don of New York. He is merciless with his rivals, but also intelligent, astute and faithful to honor and friendship. His life and businesses, as well as those of his son and heir, make up the storyline of this masterpiece. With the publication of The Godfather, for the first time the Mafia was portrayed from the inside. Later, Puzo himself would write the scripts for the famous trilogy of Francis Ford Coppola.
Description in Spanish:
[via]
