A book that contains as much learning as fun is a rare gem, and Hugin's book is a treasure you will certainly want to add to your collection. Part storybook and part songbook, A Bard's Book of Pagan Songs takes you on an adventure through the Mabinogion (a collection of Welsh tales of heroism and romance), celebrates the wheel of the year, and affirms the significance of the pagan heritage. These songs make an excellent accompaniment to festival celebrations, and they are a fun way to learn some of the important aspects of paganism. Hugin tells the story behind each song, followed by words and music so that playing them is as easy as picking up your guitar. The included CD gives a feel for how some of the songs could be played and showcases Hugin's considerable talent, which has earned him the title of bard. Be careful when you listen: Hugin's exuberance is contagious, and you may find yourself singing along or even dancing a jig. --Brian Patterson [via]

Steve Blamires constructs for his readers a base camp in the history and use of the ogham before launching an expedition toward complete understanding of the physical, mental, and spiritual aspects of the ogham and the trees they represent. Quite a quest, but Blamires succeeds. Where other popular forms of magic can be slanted toward development of only one aspect, Blamires's study of the threefold nature of the ogham insures that the body of practical magical knowledge gathered on this journey will be useful in all levels of existence. A Community of Witches explores the beliefs and practices of Neo-Paganism and Witchcraft - generally known to scholars and practitioners as Wicca. While the words "magic," "witchcraft," and "paganism" evoke images of the distant past and remote cultures, this book shows that Wicca has emerged as part of a new religious movement that reflects the era in which it developed. Imported to the United States in the late 1960s from the United Kingdom, the religion absorbed into its basic fabric the social concerns of the time: feminism, environmentalism, self-development, alternative spirituality, and mistrust of authority. Helen A. Berger's ten-year participant observation study of Neo-Pagans and Witches on the eastern seaboard of the United States and her collaboration on a national survey of Neo-Pagans form the basis for exploring the practices, structures, and transformation of this nascent religion. Responding to scholars who suggest that Neo-Paganism is merely a pseudoreligion or a cultural movement because it lacks central authority and clear boundaries, Berger contends that Neo-Paganism has many of the characteristics that one would expect of a religion born in late modernity: the appropriation of rituals from other cultures, a view of the universe as a cosmic whole, an emphasis on creating and re-creating the self, an intertwining of the personal and the political, and a certain playfulness. Gypsies have long held a place in romantic fantasy. Even the name they commonly use to refer to themselves, the Romany, sounds like romance. However, romantic images of Gypsy life have fallen prey to harsh depictions of Gypsies as criminals living in the poorest of conditions. Buckland dispels some of the contemporary misinformation and revitalizes the romance of the past that, despite societal pressures and constraints, still can be found in Romany culture today. Buckland's collection of photographs of early-20th-century Gypsies--their ornately carved vardos (the colorful wagons that served as both home and transportation) and their close-knit family lives--elicit a sigh of longing for the freedom of life on the road. Gypsy Witchcraft & Magic certainly lives up to its title, revealing spells, talismans and methods of divination that have become an inherent part of Gypsy culture, but Buckland's real achievement is his preservation of part of a culture that is slowly dissolving in the social mainstream. --Brian Patterson END [via]

Why Were the Teachings of the Original Christians Brutally Suppressed by the Roman Church?
" Because they portray Jesus and Mary Magdalene as mythic figures based on the Pagan Godman and Goddess
" Because they show that the gospel story is a spiritual allegory encapsulating a profound philosophy that leads to mythical enlightenment
" Because they have the power to turn the world inside out and transform life into an exploration of consciousness
Drawing on modern scholarship, the authors of the international bestseller The Jesus Mysteries decode the secret teachings of the original Christians for the first time in almost two millennia and theorize about who the original Christians really were and what they actually taught. In addition, the book explores the many myths of Jesus and the Goddess and unlocks the lost secret teachings of Christian mysticism, which promise happiness and immortality to those who attain the state of Gnosis, or enlightenment. This daring and controversial book recovers the ancient wisdom of the original Christians and demonstrates its relevance to us today.

And the power of God is stronger than the power of the devil, so divine works are more true than demoniac operations. Whence inasmuch as evil is powerful in the world, then it must be the work of the devil always conflicting with the work of God. Therefore as it is unlawful to hold that the devil's evil craft can apparently exceed the work of God, so it us unlawful to believe that the noblest works of creation, that is to say, man and beast, can be harmed and spoiled by the power of the devil. The Notorious Handbook Once Used to Condemn and Punish "Witches", by Heinrich Kramer and James Sprenger. This is one of the most notorious books in history. Thousands of innocent people, especially women, lost their lives at the expense of this book. It was first published around 1489, shortly after the invention of the printing press and five years after a papal bull was issued legitimizing the belief in witches. It went through at least 30 printings and became the handbook for witch hunters, both Protestant and Catholic. It gave permission to bishops and secular authorities to prosecute witches if there were no representatives from the Inquisition around, giving full directions. After the witch trials swept through Europe, some villages were left with as few as two women. So if this book is so bad, why should one read it? Because there are lessons to be learned, both psychologically and historically, and there is an ignorance to overcome. This is a fascinating study of mass hysteria, greed, and delusional behavior. This in-depth primer of the magic of the Northern Way introduces the major concepts and practices of Gothic or Germanic magic. English, German, Dutch, Icelandic, Danish, Norwegian, and Swedish peoples are all directly descended from this ancient Germanic cultural stock. According to author Edred Thorsson, if you are interested in living a holistic life with unity of body-mind-spirit, a key to knowing your spiritual heritage is found in the heritage of your body-in the natural features which you have inherited from your distant ancestors. Most readers of this book already "speak the language" of the Teutonic tradition.
Northern Magic contains material that has never before been discussed in a practical way. This book outlines the ways of Northern magic and the character of the Northern magician. It explores the theories of traditional Northern psychology (or the lore of the soul) in some depth, as well as the religious tradition of the Troth and the whole Germanic theology. The remaining chapters make up a series of "mini-grimoires" on four basic magical techniques in the Northern Way: Younger Futhark rune magic, Icelandic galdor staves, Pennsylvania hex signs, and "seith" (or shamanism). This is an excellent overview of the Teutonic tradition that will interest neophytes as well as long-time travelers along the Northern Way.
Contains four complete handbooks of magical practice in one
Gives practical instructions on how to carve runes and make hex-signs
Provides the history of the Northern Renaissance
Outlines the Germanic Gods and Goddesses

For a people that at one time dominated much of Europe, very little is known of the Celts and their religion, yet many flimsy theories and fanciful relationships have grown up over the years based on the scant evidence available. In a scholarly and systematic study, Anne Ross draws on all of the available evidence--archaeological sites in Europe and the British Isles, ancient Greek and Roman writers and early British vernacular literature--to separate the grain of what we know from the chaff of accreted misinformation and loose interpretation. Dana D. Eilers now brings her legal education and experience to the Pagan community with this new book. A 1981 cum laude graduate of New England School of Law with a history of private civil practice for 17 years in the states of Missouri and Illinois, Dana has written an informative and educational resource to help Pagans understand the law and how it works. This book touches upon constitutional law, employment discrimination, family law, land use, landlord/tenant issues, and other areas of the law that are of interest to Pagans. It helps you understand your rights as a Pagan. It also provides an overview of the American court system and how it works, with some hints on finding and working with attorneys. Additionally, Dana presents a historical perspective on religion and government so that the modern Pagan can truly appreciate the unique moment in history in which we live. [via]

The collection of Norse-Icelandic mythological and heroic poetry known as the "Poetic Edda" contains the greater narratives of the creation of the world and the coming of Ragnarok, the Doom of the Gods. Since the rediscovery of the "Poetic Edda" in the 17th century, its poetry has fascinated artists as diverse as Thomas Gray, Richard Wagner, and Jorge Luis Borges. This complete translation includes a scholarly introduction, notes, a genealogy of the gods and giants, and an index of names. [via]

The Poetic Edda comprises a treasure trove of mythic and spiritual verse holding an important place in Nordic culture, literature, and heritage. Its tales of strife and death form a repository, in poetic form, of Norse mythology and heroic lore, embodying both the ethical views and the cultural life of the North during the late heathen and early Christian times.
Collected by an unidentified Icelander, probably during the twelfth or thirteenth century, The Poetic Edda was rediscovered in Iceland in the seventeenth century by Danish scholars. Even then its value as poetry, as a source of historical information, and as a collection of entertaining stories was recognized. This meticulous translation succeeds in reproducing the verse patterns, the rhythm, the mood, and the dignity of the original in a revision that Scandinavian Studies says "may well grace anyone's bookshelf."

This is the most radical work to date by Janet Farrar and Gavin Bone, arguably the world's leading experts on the subject of Modern Witchcraft and the Neo-Pagan movement. It is nothing less than their detailed analysis of the way Witchcraft has evolved into the worldwide religion that it is today...and their vision of its future. The authors do not create or endorse a specific Witchcraft tradition, but rather identify a system that is at the root of all of the existing paths within Witchcraft. They show how Wicca is a modern, non-dogmatic dynamic tradition still in a state of evolution-a Priesthood based on connection with the Divine and service to humanity. Here is a book for anyone interested in Wicca, from seekers just beginning on the path of the Old Ways to those thirsting for more knowledge about its inner practices. [via]

This Tarot isn't for Everyone, but it may be For You!
The Sacred Circle Tarot draws on the Pagan heritage of Britain and Ireland, its sacred sites, and symbolic imagery from that tradition. It's based on the idea (suggested by R. J. Stewart) that the Tarot had its origins with the bards of Celtic culture. Together with the included 336-page, full-size book, the deck becomes a virtual training course in Celtic Paganism.
Besides understanding the history and theories, there is lots of practical work for any Pagan or Tarot enthusiast. Included are instructions for six different spreads and how to use the cards for several types of meditation and personal spiritual development. The artwork, which combines photos, pencil drawings, computer colorization and enhancement helps to give a breathtaking feeling of extreme realism to the images. It should. The cards show actual landscapes and sacred sites in Britain and Ireland.
Pagans will enjoy the fact that many of the Christian or Kabalistic symbolism has been removed and replaced with symbolism of the ancient Celts. For example the Fool is now the Green Man, the Magician is the High Priest, the Emperor and Empress are the Lord and Lady, the Devil is replaced by the Underworld, and the World is now the World Tree.
The book is a veritable training course in Paganism and Tarot. The imagery on the cards is absolutely beautiful. It's no wonder that this has become one of the most popular decks around. You're going to love this as soon as you get your hands on it!
