When it comes to creating the life you want, Shakti Gawain literally wrote THE book. Now considered a classic, Creative Visualization teaches readers how to use their imaginations to manifest their deepest desires. In a straight-talking narrative, Gawain uses the first part to cover the basics, with chapters such as, "How to Visualize", "Affirmations", and "Creative Visualization Only Works for the Good". Once she shows readers how the visualisation process actually works, Gawain moves onto loftier discussions such as "Contacting Your Higher Self", "Meeting Your Guide", "Setting Goals" and "Treasure Maps".
Fear not, this isn't a spiritual-lightweight book for people with severe cases of the "gimmes". Gawain has her priorities in the right place, and cautions readers that creative visualisation will not serve greed or shallow-minded thinking. For example, she discourages the cycle of trying to have more money, so you can do what you want in life, so you will be happier. "The way it actually works is the reverse", she explains. "You must first be who you really are, then do what you need to do, in order to have what you want". Yet she also writes an excellent chapter on letting go of the misguided guilt that inhibits readers from becoming truly prosperous. --Gail Hudson [via]

This new-millennium translation of Lao Tzu's Dao De Jing (also known as Tao Te Ching) has many features, some unique, as follows:
1 - Interlinear Presentation. A short passage of two or three lines in Chinese is immediately translated into English before moving onto another short passsage in Chinese. In this way, a Chinese-literate reader can easily assess the level of the translator's competence, the appropriateness of his rendition, and the extent of his fidelity to the original -- whether it is an entire passage, a full sentence, a short phrase, or a single word. (A unique feature)
2 - Rhymed Passages. Lao Tzu uses rhymed expression for emphasis. Of the essay's 364 passages, at least 59 passages are rhymed -- these 59 passages are all rhymed in this translation. Since one can learn a great deal by reading just these rhymed passages, they are also collected as Appendix C at the back of this volume. (Another unique feature)
3 - Reference-Specific Annotations. This volume has 500+ foonotes.
4 - Comparison With Confucius's Analects. Dao De Jing was written to challenge Confucius and his school of thought. This volume culls 71 direct quotations from the Analects (as translated by the translator in an earlier work) for comparison. These quotations, along with other comments, are collected as Appendix E. (A unique feature)
5 - Comparison With Sun Tzu's Art of War. Dao De Jing is also regarded as a treatise on war. This volume culls 46 directo quotations from Sun Tzu's Art of War (as translated by the translator from another of his earlier works) for comparison. These quotations, along with other comments, are collected as Appendix F. (A unique feature)
6 - Lao Tzu's year-by-year chronology. Appendix A, on five pages. (A unique feature)
7 - List of Dao De Jing in English translation. Appendix H, on 14 pages, listing 124 unduplicated work.
8 - Key-word index. Appendix I, on 20 pages. [via]

ave you ever wondered where the expressions Honeymoon and Tying the Knot come from, in association with marriage? Handfasting: A Practical Journey takes you on a historical journey, starting with pre-Christian times. It describes the customs and traditions associated with betrothal from times and places in the world when our forbears were in tune with the changing seasons and the natural rhythms of the world they lived in. The increasing popularity of handfasting is recognition that the current alternatives of church or civil ceremonies offer little in the way of deeper meaning in our increasingly pagan times. Mary Neasham offers practical advice on creating your own handfasting ceremony. A very modern way to commit to another person based on the lore and customs of our ancestors. [via]

Mounds and earthworks are the most conspicuous elements of prehistoric Native American culture to be found on the landscape of eastern North America. This book, now in its seventh printing, identifies and describes 41 extant, publicly accessible sites in Indiana, Kentucky, Ohio and West Virginia, where mounds were constructed by Adena and Hopewell peoples between 3,000 and 1,500 years ago. The book also reviews the culture, history and geography of these two mound-building groups and the face of their earthen constructions during the historic period. Access information and sources of additional information about the Adena and Hopewell and the sites are provided.
This is an informative and versatile book, useful to travelers, students, and anyone else with an interest in understanding, managing, and preserving the remaining landmarks of North American prehistory. The fact that this book is now in its seventh printing is a testimony to its popular acceptance and usefulness. [via]

Installment number four in the acclaimed Rowan Gant Investigations suspense-thriller series. The Law Of Three is a no holds barred follow up to Harm None, Never Burn A Witch, and Perfect Trust.
The Inquisitor is back and he wants revenge...
Saint Louis is once again the hunting ground for Eldon Andrew Porter, the deranged spree killer who reenacted the horrors of the 15th century Inquisition upon his victims. Everyone believed he had fallen to his death in the icy waters of the Mississippi river on a dark February night - Everyone except Rowan Gant, that is. He knew Porter would eventually return, and that he would be his primary target.
What he hadn't expected was the way in which the twisted sociopath would take aim, and the collateral damage it would bring.
Now, the unofficial Witch of the of the Saint Louis Major Case Squad must become the bait in this manhunt before any more innocent lives are lost.
However, he can't really be sure if the police have his back, or if he is being led like a lamb to the slaughter. [via]

BEAT ME, WHIP ME, KILL ME...
I have this unusual problem on my hands--a female serial killer...a female sexual predator serial killer, to be exact. That makes her not only unusual, but incredibly rare as well. She has an intense appetite for sadistic kink when it comes to the demise of her prey, and she definitely doesn't constrain herself to just "whips and chains," if you get my meaning.
I'm sure you are wondering what makes her my personal problem. Well...that's kind of a long story, so I'll just give you the high points.
My name is Rowan Gant, and I'm a consultant for the Greater Saint Louis Major Case Squad. It's a sometimes rocky partnership, but in general the cops find me useful to have around since I can hear the voices of the dead. Talking to "ghosts" is a bizarre affliction, yes, even for a Witch like me, but I've learned to live with it--sort of. Mind you, I'm not at all happy about this curse of mine, but it's not like I have any say in the matter. I didn't choose it... It chose me. The worst part, though, is that every single time I help the police with a case, the psychic garbage that comes along with it follows me home.
And, that brings me back around to the homicidal sociopath in high heels. There is more going on with her than just your average crazy, but I can't quite put my finger on what it is. Not yet, anyway... I'm pretty sure that's why I've got an extra bad feeling about this one--a very extra bad feeling. In fact, I think this mess is going to do more than simply follow me home. I think it is planning to move in... [via]

Anyone who has read the Harry Potter books is aware that author J.K. Rowling infuses her stories with references to mythology, literature, history, and legends. Even if you don't know exactly what a manticore or a griffin is, it's likely that many readers have at least a vague sense of the existence of these creatures in ancient lore. Inspired by Rowling's suggestion to a young fan to "go and look it up," author David Colbert did quite a bit of investigation himself. The result is the fun, entertaining, and enlightening Magical Worlds of Harry Potter.
From alchemy to hippogriffs to veela, Colbert explores the fascinating meanings between the lines and buried within the names of characters and places in all the Harry Potter books. Chapter headings include such intriguing questions as "Have Witches Always Flown on Broomsticks?" "Why Would Chocolate Help After Escaping a Dementor?" and "Are Any of the Famous Witches and Wizards Real?" A small purple tab in the margin of the first page of each chapter guides readers looking for specific subjects: Divination, Goblins, McGonogall, Owls, Voldemort, Wands, etc. Curious readers will learn the link between Hagrid's pet dog, Fluffy, and the mythological Greek sentry to Hades, Cerberus. And they'll get a taste of scholar Joseph Campbell's theories on heroism, with Harry as the hero, of course. The true magic of this book is that it will surely inspire Harry Potter fans to delve deeper into the various areas it explores. Readers will soon be clamoring for collections of Greek, Japanese, Indian, and Egyptian mythology, as well as copies of The Sword in the Stone, A Midsummer Night's Dream, The Canterbury Tales, and Treasure Island, to discover the sources of their favorite Harry Potter books. Since its first publication in 1567, Arthur Golding's translation of Ovid has had an enormous influence on English literature and poetry. This is the translation that Shakespeare knew, read, and borrowed from. Golding's witty and beautiful verse continues to delight today's readers. This volume promises to be a valuable resource for students and teachers of Ovid and Shakespeare indeed, for anyone interested in the foundations of English literature.
"It is a tour de force of translation, and it deserves, more than 400 years after its composition, to be read." Rain Taxi Review of Books
"This 1567 translation of Ovid's Metamorphoses . . . is tough, surprising, and lovely . . . To read it is to understand the Renaissance view of the classical world, storytelling and also Shakespeare's language and worldview." A.S.Byatt
From the Introduction by John Frederick Nims:
"[Golding's translation] was the English Ovid from the time of publication in 1567 until about a decade after the death of Shakespeare in 1616. The Ovid, that is, for all who read him in English during the greatest period of our literature. And its racy verve, its quirks and oddities, its rugged English gusto, is still more enjoyable, more plain fun to read, than any other Metamorphoses in English."

For a people that at one time dominated much of Europe, very little is known of the Celts and their religion, yet many flimsy theories and fanciful relationships have grown up over the years based on the scant evidence available. In a scholarly and systematic study, Anne Ross draws on all of the available evidence--archaeological sites in Europe and the British Isles, ancient Greek and Roman writers and early British vernacular literature--to separate the grain of what we know from the chaff of accreted misinformation and loose interpretation. Women have been writing, and writing very well, about nature for hundreds of years, but, as in so many other fields, their contributions were overlooked and undervalued until recently. Lorraine Anderson's anthology Sisters of the Earth is just the remedy. In it, Anderson gathers writing on nature from a range of authors, among them the relatively familiar Sally Carrighar, Marjorie Kinnan Rawlings, Ann Zwinger, Rachel Carson, and Ursula Le Guin and younger contemporaries like Pat Mora, Terry Tempest Williams, Luci Tapahonso, and Joy Harjo. Anderson showcases essays, fiction, and poetry in roughly equal measure, and her intelligent notes and introduction add much to this generous--and long overdue, and most welcome--collection. [via]
