For though Odd lives in the small desert town of Pico Mundo, he stands between two worlds, and for him the heroic and the harrowing are everyday occurrences. A childhood friend of Odd's has disappeared and the worst is feared. But as Odd applies his unique talents to the task of finding the missing person, he discovers something worse than a dead body. New allies and new enemies gather around Odd, some living and some not. But the enemy he encounters is unspeakably cunning, and every sacrifice is needed to tip the balance between despair and hope as a life-changing revelation rushes towards us. For most children, summer vacation is something to look forward to. But not for our 13-year-old hero, who's forced to spend his summers with an aunt, uncle, and cousin who detest him. The third book in J.K. Rowling's Harry Potter series catapults into action when the young wizard "accidentally" causes the Dursleys' dreadful visitor Aunt Marge to inflate like a monstrous balloon and drift up to the ceiling. Fearing punishment from Aunt Petunia and Uncle Vernon (and from officials at Hogwarts School of Witchcraft and Wizardry who strictly forbid students to cast spells in the nonmagic world of Muggles), Harry lunges out into the darkness with his heavy trunk and his owl Hedwig.
As it turns out, Harry isn't punished at all for his errant wizardry. Instead he is mysteriously rescued from his Muggle neighborhood and whisked off in a triple-decker, violently purple bus to spend the remaining weeks of summer in a friendly inn called the Leaky Cauldron. What Harry has to face as he begins his third year at Hogwarts explains why the officials let him off easily. It seems that Sirius Black--an escaped convict from the prison of Azkaban--is on the loose. Not only that, but he's after Harry Potter. But why? And why do the Dementors, the guards hired to protect him, chill Harry's very heart when others are unaffected? Once again, Rowling has created a mystery that will have children and adults cheering, not to mention standing in line for her next book. Fortunately, there are four more in the works. What do you get when you mix reanimated Nazis, vampires, and freaky killer Catholics and Protestants breathing down each others' necks? In the case of Hellsing, you get an all-out bloody war. Or such has proven to be the case so far. The world is engulfed in the flames of destruction, and all seems lost. Vernedead's "Geese" are literally being eaten alive, and it might just take half-vampire, Seras Victoria, a certain loss of innocence to provide a shred of hope. But that's not all this story hinges on. The vampire Hellsing himself will surely show at some point, and the Catholic Iscariot Army, a dreaded force, is also on the march. This is a situation of boiling blood, and it's about to burst! [via]

What's the result when the Nazis hiding in South America engineer an army of vampires and mount an all-out campaign of deathly dominance? Well, one thing you get is a little unity - seems the Protestant Hellsing Organization and the Catholic Iscariot agency might just have to think about teaming up. Looks like the First World War of the undead is about to erupt in history's biggest battle of blood and fangs. Things are just beginning to heat up in the fourth volume of Hellsing! [via]

Join them in a battle of blood, guts, ghouls, gore...and a lot of Kohta Hirano's signature offbeat comedy. This punk-goth-vampire-action-comedy-fun-as-hell nightmare just keeps rolling, as Kohta has even more fun than he probably ought to. Melvin Harris, a researcher and broadcaster for the BBC, has written a fascinating expose of long-lived "psychic mysteries." Investigating the Unexplained examines many claims made by the proponents of the paranormal. Harris' work led him into the worlds of ghosts and demons, haunted houses, and spirit mediums. He checked up on reports of reincarnation, poltergeists, a mummy's curse, and eyewitness accounts of "little green children."
This book gives us the real facts behind the famous Amityville Horror hoax, the hypnotic regressions to past lives recorded on the much-publicized Bloxham tapes, the "psychic detectives" involved in the search for Jack the Ripper, and many other "fully authenticated" but incredible tales.
Harris went back to the primary sources of these stories and found he was always able to say, "Sorry, you've been duped!" For every legend he debunks, Harris present the facts. He shows us how and why a hoax was perpetrated. Often the public grasps on to someone else's story and, before long, these tales are mythologized and believed to be truths. Investigating the Unexplained is an exciting look at psychic mysteries and the facts behind them. [via]

On her way home from school on a snowy December day, 14-year-old Susie Salmon is lured into a cornfield and brutally raped and murdered, the latest victim of a serial killer. The Lovely Bones, Alice Sebold's haunting and heartbreaking debut novel, unfolds from heaven, where "life is a perpetual yesterday" and where Susie narrates and keeps watch over her grieving family and friends, as well as her brazen killer and the sad detective working on her case.
As Sebold fashions it, everyone has his or her own version of heaven. Susie's resembles the athletic fields and landscape of a suburban high school: a heaven of her "simplest dreams", where "there were no teachers... We never had to go inside except for art class... The boys did not pinch our backsides or tell us we smelled; our textbooks were Seventeen and Glamour and Vogue".
The Lovely Bones works as an odd yet affecting coming-of-age story. Susie struggles to accept her death while still clinging to the lost world of the living, following her family's dramas over the years. Her family disintegrates in their grief: her father becomes determined to find her killer, her mother withdraws, her little brother Buckley attempts to make sense of the new hole in his family and her younger sister Lindsey moves through the milestone events of her teenage and young adult years with Susie riding spiritual shotgun. Random acts and missed opportunities run throughout the book--Susie recalls her sole kiss with a boy on earth as "like an accident--a beautiful gasoline rainbow".
Though sentimental at times, The Lovely Bones is a moving exploration of loss and mourning that ultimately puts its faith in the living and that is made even more powerful by a cast of convincing characters. Sebold orchestrates a big finish and though things tend to wrap up a little too well for everyone in the end, one can only imagine (or hope) that heaven is indeed a place filled with such happy endings. --Brad Thomas Parsons, Amazon.com [via]

Noted dream researcher Stephen LaBerge invites the reader to experience the world of lucid dreaming. Lucid dreaming means dreaming while knowing that you are dreaming. Everyone has, in theory, the capacity to learn to dream lucidly, because everyone dreams every night. Lucid dreamers develop a frame of mind that allows them to recognize when they are dreaming. From that point, they are free to do as they choose. This freedom, hard to imagine in our highly constrained waking reality, is astonishing, exhilarating, and inspiring. The laws of physics and society are repealed. The limits are only those of the dreamer's imagination. [via]

What lurks behind the world of the living? What is it that hides just out of sight of human perception? There is more to our world than our eyes reveal. Mahito, a young high school girl, is about to find out. She has just died. Mahito lives at home with her father (an ex-pro wrestler) and her cousin Erika, who came to live with Mahito's family several years ago after the death of her parents. Erika is a shy and weak six year old, who has had difficulty adjusting to her new family - she needs constant looking after, and unfortunately, it is Mahito who ends up devoting most of her time to this task. So it was on a rainy night, when Mahito had gone out for groceries that she was struck by a car. Two days later she awakens at home, covered in dirt and blood, yet there is not a scratch to be found anywhere on her. Shortly thereafter she discovers that she had died that night of the accident, but a mysterious woman named Alice had arrived on the scene and brought her back to life. This strange woman shared a part of her "Sacred Heart" with Mahito, giving her life as a Median, or Undead. It is a strange world Mahito is introduced to. As a Median, she possesses unique powers and sees the world around her for what it really is - a place quite different than what we humans perceive. It is a darker more foreboding plane where danger can lurk behind any given corner. [via]

Bizarre Encounter Initiates Extreme Spiritual Battle
Dylan Fosters carefully constructed, orderly world begins to fray, thread by thread, the day the eyes of hell turn upon her. After a chance encounter with a creepy, sickly looking stranger, her days become punctuated with disturbing, inexplicable events. Desperate for answers, Dylan seeks not only to extricate herself from the nightmare, but to separate the spiritual from the earthly, friend from foe, angel from devil, good from evil. Shes smack in the eye of the battle with only God-issued spiritual armor and her own wits to protect her.
I saw the first fly alight on the edge of my plate during supper. This was no ordinary fly. It was huge. The size of a small Volkswagen. I could have painted daisies on it and sold rides to small children.
Hotter than the eyes of hell...
School is back in session, but for psychology professor Dylan Foster, the promise of a new semester is dying in the heat of the late Texas summer. First, there is the bizarre encounter with a ghastly pale stranger. Then her mothers engagement ring turns upthe same ring that was buried with her mother two years before.
Soon, Dylans carefully ordered world is unraveling, one thread at a time. A former patient accuses her of impropriety, putting her career in jeopardy. A suicide plunges her deeper into shadow. Relationships with colleagues start to crumble. And then there are those flies in her house...
Dylan Foster is about to get a crash course in spiritual warfareand a glimpse of her own small but significant role in a vast eternal conflict. But when the dust settles, will anything be left of her life as she knows it?
Story Behind the Book
The reality of spiritual warfare has long fascinated Melanie Wells. A practicing private counselor, she is energized by pondering the significance of seemingly mundane events, the importance of individual faithfulness, and the connection between the spiritual realm and the empirical world. She emphasizes these themes in her book, where the first scene came to her in a dream. [via]
