In this volume Culy provides a basic lexical, analytical and syntactical analysis of the Greek text of 1, 2, 3 John--information often presumed by technical commentaries and omitted by popular ones. But more than just an analytic key, I, II, III John reflects the latest advances in scholarship on Greek grammar and linguistics. The volume also contains recommendations for further reading and an up-to-date bibliography. A perfect supplement to any commentary, I, II, III John is as equally helpful to language students, of any level, as it is to busy clergy who use the Greek text in preparation for proclamation. [via]

Dynamic churchescongregations that are experiencing phenomenal growth, Christian ministries that God is using to take down walls, churches where souls are being saved and lives transformedinspire us and make for great reading. The book of Acts, the divinely inspired history of the early church, is all this and more.
In the author's words: "One reason I love to study the book of Acts is its uniqueness. It is the sourcebook for the spread of early Christianity. Without it we would know little about the apostolic church except what could be gleaned from Paul's epistles. It is the chronicle of the spreading flame of the Holy Spirit."
In this welcome addition to the Preaching the Word series, Pastor Kent Hughes explores the key narratives of the book of acts, including the birth of the church, bold gospel preaching resulting in the prospering of the church, and the dramatic missionary journeys of the Apostle Paul.

In our day of massive religious confusion, the message of Colossians is among the most timely of all the New Testament books. Today many seek to exclude belief in God from every corner of modern life. Others flaunt "New Age" ideas about God and Christ which collide with the Scriptures. Confusion reigns and many are in need of knowing the Truth.
Christians in the first-century city of Colosse lived in a similar situation. Having first received the true Christian faith, they were soon confronted with distortions of the truth concerning the divinity and humanity of Christ and at the same time tempted by spiritual elitism. And the answers they needed are the same timeless answers that the modern world cries out to hear.
In this study of Colossians; Pastor R. Kent Hughes' expositions go to the heart of the text in Colossians, amplifying its message with memorable illustrations and penetrating insight. His careful exegesis and perceptive applications offer new understanding and promote lasting growth in Christ.
Here is a resource with solid help for pastors, teachers, and indeed anyone who wishes to understand or to communicate the grand message of the book of Colossiansa timely volume with enduring value of the Church of Jesus Christ. Part of the Preaching the Word series.

The Ancient Christian Commentary on Scripture is a unique twenty-eight-volume series encompassing all of Scripture and offering contemporary readers the opportunity to study for themselves the key writings of the early church fathers. Arranged by the books of the Bible, each portion of commentary allows the living voices of the church in its formative centuries to speak as they engage the sacred page of Scripture, rendered throughout the series in English in the ecumenically accepted Revised Standard Version of the Bible. The Ancient Christian Commentary on Scripture does what very few of today's students of the Bible could do for themselves. With the aid of computer technology, the vast array of writings from the church fathers - including much that is available only in the ancient languages - have been combed for their comment on Scripture. From these results, scholars with a deep knowledge of the fathers and a heart for the church have hand-selected material for each volume, shaping, annotating and introducing it to today's readers. Each portion of commentary has been chosen for its salient insight, its rhetorical power and its faithful representation of the consensual exegesis of the early church. The Ancient Christian Commentary on Scripture is an ecumenical project, promoting a vital link of communication between today's varied Christian traditions and their common ancient ancestors in the faith. On this shared ground we listen as leading pastoral theologians of the church's first several centuries gather around the text of Scripture and offer their best theological, spiritual and pastoral insights. Today the historical-critical method of interpretation has nearly exhausted its claim on the biblical text and on the church. In its wake there is a wide-spread yearning among Christian individuals and communities for the wholesome, the deep and the enduring. The Ancient Christian Commentary on Scripture seeks not to replace those excellent commentaries that have been produced in the twentieth century. It supplements them, framing them with interpretive voices that have long sustained the church and only recently have fallen silent. It invites us to listen with appreciative ears and sympathetic minds as our ancient ancestors in the faith describe and interpret the scriptural vistas as they see them. The Ancient Christian Commentary on Scripture is a postcritical revival of the early commentary tradition known as the glossa ordinaria, a text artfully elaborated with ancient and authoritative reflections and insights. An uncommon companion for theological interpretation, spiritual reading, and wholesome teaching and preaching. [via]

This commentary series is established on the presupposition that the theological character of the New Testament documents calls for exegesis that is sensitive to theological themes as well as to the details of the historical, linguistic, and textual context. Such thorough exegetical work lies at the heart of these volumes, which contain detailed verse-by-verse commentary preceded by general comments on each section and subsection of the text.
An important aim of the NIGTC authors is to interact with the wealth of significant New Testament research published in recent articles and monographs. In this connection the authors make their own scholarly contributions to the ongoing study of the biblical text.
The text on which these commentaries are based is the UBS Greek New Testament, edited by Kurt Aland and others. While engaging the major questions of text and interpretation at a scholarly level, the authors keep in mind the needs of the beginning student of Greek as well as the pastor or layperson who may have studied the language at some time but does not now use it on a regular basis. Arthur W. Pink was an exacting person. He was blessed (some say plagued) with a photographic memory. He never forgot what he had read, and upon occasion would prove it by stating the volume and page where he read a certain comment. Because of this, some found him hard to bear, since, if he were challenged, he could quote Scriptures by the hundreds to back up a statement of his. He plainly felt it was better to be right, than to be socially acceptable. Many a roast in the oven was burned to a crisp because Pink would preach 2 hours on a Sunday morning (from 11 a.m to 1 p.m). This is the commentary to own, if you cannot afford Owen. Why? Because Pink was an excellent judge of quality commenting, and he quotes extensively from Owen, Brown, Saphir, Gouge, etc. Along with the excellencies of these expositors, you get Pink's own valuable interpretations. You will find many unique comments in all of Pink's works. Yet he is such a close reasoner, and so adept at marshalling Scripture, that it is difficult to say, 'This time, Mr. Pink, you are wrong.' You will never regret the purchase of this set (3 vols. in 2). [via]

This volume in the New International Biblical Commentary provides insightful answers for the modern reader confronted by the puzzles of James's thoroughgoing Jewish character. Davids demonstrates how the Jewishness of the epistle, including its stress on poverty and piety, stems actually from its primitive Christian character. Careful section-by-section exegesis with the NIV as the base text renders James's message accessible and relevant to students of all abilities.
ÂThe NIBC has been written by internationally respected experts in Biblical Studies. Scholarly arguments are carefully analyzed and presented in a way that anyone concerned to gain a deeper understanding of the New Testament will find both accessible and helpful. Christians of many different traditions will welcome this series as a valuable resource that will promote better understanding of the Bible and its message.Â

Fullness and freedom--two aspects of Christian life that we all want to share. Paul wrote about them at length (and depth) in his letter to the Christians at Colossae, where certain new teachers were proclaiming that "mere Christianity" is not enough. There is, they suggested, a fuller experience, a greater liberation, than they had so far enjoyed. But Paul was adamant: all God's fullness is in Christ alone, and only through his complete work are we set free. These are the great objective truths of the faith that Dick Lucas highlights in his exposition, enabling us to see both the riches that are ours in Christ and the irrelevance--even blasphemy--of all would-be improvements on what God has done. Alec Motyer is himself gripped by James's energy and concern for practical Christianity. The letter shows how a genuine faith is a tested faith, how encounter with difficulties is an essential part of the growth to Christian maturity this book powerfully brings out James's memorable themes--the link between enduring trials and maturity; the question of perfection; the good gifts of God; faith, works and Christian concern in a world of human need; the implications of careless and evil words; the meaning of war; the church and healing; confession of sin; and the need for active purity in life. . . . undertaken to provide earnest students of the New Testament with an exposition that is thorough and abreast of modern scholarship and at the same time loyal to the Scriptures as the infallible Word of God.This statement reflects the underlying purpose of The New International Commentary on the New Testament. Begun in the late 1940s by an international team of New Testament scholars, the NICNT series has become recognized by pastors, students, and scholars alike as a critical yet orthodox commentary marked by solid biblical scholarship within the evangelical Protestant tradition.
While based on a thorough study of the Greek text, the commentary introductions and expositions contain a minimum of Greek references. The NICNT authors evaluate significant textual problems and take into account the most important exegetical literature. More technical aspects such as grammatical, textual, and historical problems are dealt with in footnotes, special notes, and appendixes.
Under the general editorship of three outstanding New Testament scholars first Ned Stonehouse (Westminster Theological Seminary, Philadelphia), then F. F. Bruce (University of Manchester, England), and now Gordon D. Fee (Regent College, Vancouver, British Columbia) the NICNT series has continued to develop over the years. In order to keep the commentary new and conversant with contemporary scholarship, the NICNT volumes have been and will be revised or replaced as necessary.
The newer NICNT volumes in particular take into account the role of recent rhetorical and sociological inquiry in elucidating the meaning of the text, and they also exhibit concern for the theology and application of the text. As the NICNT series is ever brought up to date, it will continue to find ongoing usefulness as an established guide to the New Testament text. [via]

"In "Paul, the Spirit, and the People of God," this Penetdcostal scholar has redefined the terms of the discussion about the Holy Spirit in a way that transcends today's paradigm of 'charismatic' or 'noncharismatic' orientation. His words are a strong reminder of what God, through his Holy Spirit, intends the church to be. . . . His work is an attempt to point us back to the Bible and reinvigorate our own vision of how the Spirit mobilizes the community of believers in the local church."
" Wendy Murray Zoba, Associate Editor, Christianity Today
"Gordon Fee, one of our truly master exegetes, has put steel and sinew into the words Spirit, spirit, and spiritual" words that have become flabby through subjectivizing indulgence and lack of exegetical exercise. His accurate, fresh, and passionate recovery of the place and meaning of Spirit in Paul and for us Christians is a provocative stimulus and reliable guide to the recovery of the experienced presence of God in our lives. For those of us who want to live in continuity with all that has been revealed in Jesus and given in the Spirit, this is an eminently practical book."

Nothing cripples a church's effectiveness like internal strife. In Philippi, Paul addressed a congregation whose private struggles were compounded by opposition and suffering from without. Paul's strategy was to write them a letter of friendship and moral exhortation, reminding them of their "partnership in the gospel," their mutual suffering for the cause of Christ, and their need to "stand firm in one spirit." His approach and counsel can serve us well today. In this warm, well-written study of Philippians, readers will find an introduction that discusses the letter's occasion and purpose, authorship, and other background information, as well as its important theological themes. Passage-by-passage commentary follows that seeks to explain what the letter means to us today as well as what it meant for its original hearers. Students, pastors, Bible teachers and everyone who wants to understand the Paul's message for the church will benefit from this excellent resource. [via]

This second volume covers Mark 9:2-16:20, the culmination of Jesus' ministry on earth. Seen in glory on the Mount of Transfiguration, challenged by religious skeptics, the Christ moves inexorably toward the Cross, where history's greatest battle would be fought and won. And so we, like the ancient world, are confronted with the crucified and risen Christ and must decide if we will acknowledge him as our Lord and Savior.
Thus in our age of aggressive evil and apathetic faith, the Gospel of Mark resounds with the dynamic power of the Lord Jesus Christ. Perhaps the most dramatic and action-packed of the Synoptic Gospels, Mark's writing continues to inspire increased commitment in the Church at large.
Mark's portrayal of Christ as the Servant-Savior takes on fresh relevance in these masterful expositions by respected pastor/author R. Kent Hughes. With careful exegesis, the author draws from the text many practical lessons for everyday living and effective ministry. His numerous illustrations reflect wide interests, extensive reading, and years of experience pastoring and counseling those who seek to know Christ and walk in his ways.
Those who preach, teach, and study will find this book a gold mine of helpful information. With divisions and outlines that are never forced, but flow naturally from the text, Mark will be a great boon to those charged with communicating the Word, and to all who seek to grow in their faith through personal Bible study. Part of the Preaching the Word series.
