Katherine Elgin grew up in a small coastal town in Australia, desperate to transcend her beginnings and make her mark. From her rebellious childhood Katherine emerges as a stunningly beautiful young woman with a voracious appetite for life's most interesting experiences and an overwhelming desire to write the best book she possibly can. But beauty is a double-edged sword and throughout her life - from Sydney, to London, to the islands of Greece - Katherine carries the burden of being both siren and artist. Inspired by the fascinating life of one of Australia's most talented and intriguing literary figures, Charmian Clift, The Broken Book is wonderfully rich, complex and compelling. [via]

An engaging adventure story set in England during the time of the Civil War when King Charles was deposed and the Roundheads were vying with the Cavaliers. The central characters are the four children of staunch Royalist Colonel Beverley killed in battle while fighting for King Charles. Through the efforts of aged forester Jacob Armitage, the children escape the burning of their ancestral home and take up residence with him in his cottage in the New Forest. As his "grandchildren" they take eagerly to the peasant life and learn to provide for themselves by using their wits. The pitfall they build to trap cattle catches more than they bargain for, leading to one adventure after another. Against all odds they deftly maneuver through the treacherous landscape of the times, eventually recovering their family estate. [via]

"It's all devastatingly true - except the bits that are lies. - Douglas Adams
Don't Panic celebrates the life of an ape-descended human called Douglas Adams who, in a field in Innsbruck in 1971, had an idea.
This is also the story of what that idea became: The Hitchhiker's Guide to the Galaxy - the original radio series which started it all, and the five book trilogy', the TV series, almost-film, computer game, towel and website that followed. Acclaimed author Neil Gaiman also tells the whole story of Liff, the Universe of Dirk Gently, and everything else Douglas ever worked on. [via]

FANGS OF THE WOLF WORLD
Across half a Galaxy, the Terran Empire maintains its sovereignty with the consent of the governed. It is a peaceful reign, held by compact and not by conquest. Again and again, when rebellion threatens the Terran Peace, the natives of the rebellious world have turned against their own people and sided with the men of Terra; not from fear, but from a sense of dedication.
There has never been open war. The battle for these worlds is fought in the minds of a few men who stand between worlds; bound to one world by interest, loyalties and allegiance; bound to the other by love.
Such a world is Wolf. Such a man was Race Cargill of the Terran Secret Service. . . . [via]

The Holy War appeared in 1682. Although The Pilgrim's Progress has always been the most popular of Bunyan's numerous works, The Holy War holds a firm second place in the hearts of Christians throughout the world.
The story recalls the fall and redemption of mankind under the guise of a beseiged city. The city of Mansoul originally belonged by right to Shaddai or God, but was betrayed through Ear Gate and Eye Gate into the hands of Diabolus or the Devil, a besieging giant who takes control. In the hands of the enemy, Mansoul loses its Major, Lord Understanding, and Mr. Conscience is dismissed from his post of Recorder. Lord Will-be-Will becomes the Lord of Mansoul--man's fallen will, selfwill, and ill-will all combined in one unpleasant and anti-God character.
Mansoul is recaptured by Emmanuel's army and Diabolus is driven out. There is triumph over sin and evil-one of the Bible's most comforting themes.
The Bunyan characters in The Holy War are fascinating: Mr. Prejudice, Captain Anything, Ill-pause, Captain Self-denial, Lord Understanding, Miss Humblemind, Master Thinwell, and many others. [via]

Edited, introduced and annotated by Cedric Watts, Professor of English Literature, University of Sussex The Merchant of Venice is one of Shakespeare's most popular comedies, but it remains deeply controversial. The text may well seem anti-Semitic; yet repeatedly, in performance, it has revealed a contrasting nature. Shylock, though vanquished in the law-court, often triumphs in the theatre. He is a character so intense that he can dominate the play, challenging abrasively its romantic and lyrical affirmations. [via]

In a world where the rich live behind the safety of a giant fortress wall and everyone else can go to hell, Parrish Plessis has learnt some useful survival tactics. Like don't cross Jamon Hondo - unless you want to be dead by the morning. But heck, what's a girl supposed to do when the one chance she may have of escaping from his grubby, stinking paws presents itself? Anyway, it's hard to be a saint in a city, and Parrish Plessis is sick of doing what she's told. Tonight, she's going to take her chance. Because she can't face tomorrow. NYLON ANGEL is the first Parrish Plessis novel. She will be back. When you've met her, you'll understand why. [via]

Liverpool -- 2002. Keva McCluskey is down and almost out. Despondent, embittered by the meteoric rise of a local rival, Sensira, he's close to quitting his dream -- of leading his own group, the Grams, to the acclaim and success it unquestionably deserves. But fortune starts to smile when the Grams get picked up by Guy de Bure, a hot young producer with a point to prove who is launching a new label. So begins the Grams' roller-coaster ride to the top. Fame, money, drugs, women -- they get more of all of these than they can cope with. But it's on their return to the States, for a grueling thirty-five-city tour to crack this elusive but enormously lucrative market, that things truly start to unravel. From the city that gave the world the Beatles comes Kevin Sampson's riotous, knowing, and totally compelling novel about a band on the make. Powder is also a frighteningly accurate lowdown on the machinations of the music business written by a man who has experienced them from the inside. "Read it and weep. And think twice before you give up the day job." -- New Musical Express (London) "All young bands should be made to read Powder, if it doesn't put them off, nothing will." -- The Times (London) "A pacey and hilarious catalogue ... a portrait of the contemporary music industry that is almost uncanny in its accuracy." -- Independent (London) "A code-red book ... drop what you're reading and read this immediately." -- Alex James of Blur [via]

The sequel to The Tribe That Lost Its Head is a compelling story that charts the steady drift of a young African nation toward bankruptcy, chaos, and barbarism. On the island of Pharamaul, a former British protectorate, newly installed prime minister, Chief Dinamaula, celebrates Independence Day with his people, full of high hopes for the future. But the heady euphoria fades and Dinamaula's ambitions and ideals start to uckle as his new-found wealth corrupts him, leaving his nation to spiral toward hellish upheaval and tribal warfare. [via]

It was perhaps the first book to achieve best-seller status before the invention of the printing press-it was certainly the most controversial. Did Venetian trader and explorer MARCO POLO (1254-1324) actually reach the court of Kublai Khan, serve the emperor as his emissary, and journey the distant lands of Cathay for 17 years, as he relates in his Travels of Marco Polo? The question still hasn't quite been settled today... but whether Polo experienced firsthand the wonders of ancient China, retold tales he heard from Arab travelers along the Silk Road, or simply invented half his stories, this remains a delightful read for fans of history, adventure, and medieval literature.
