BIOLOGY is an authoritative majors textbook with evolution as a unifying theme. In revising the text, McGraw-Hill has consulted extensively with previous users, noted experts and professors in the field. It is distinguished from other texts by its strong emphasis on natural selection and the evolutionary process that explains biodiversity.
Not only has the book been thoroughly updated to reflect rapid advances, there is more emphasis today on the teaching of concepts and this has led to significant changes in how the material is presented. Technology also plays a greater role in teaching and the Online Learning Center found at http://www.mhhe.com/raven6 provides professors and students alike with an abundance of resources.
Five considerations influenced this revision. They are: 1) Focus on concepts; 2) Reinforcing Ideas; 3) Emphasizing relevance to students; 4) Keeping up with new developments; and 5) Careful editing. [via]

Stolba offers a chronological presentation of the sweep of Western music and its composers, beginning with the music of antiquity and proceeding to the 20th Century. Since any discussion of the evolution of music is not complete without also discussing events that influenced that evolution, this comprehensive text integrates information about historical periods, cultures, and artistic movements. Fine art reproductions, detailed maps and chronologies, newly designed in this edition, also help students place the musical discussions in their cultural, geographical, and historical contexts. Along with its newly recorded CD sets and accompanying 2-volume anthology, The Development of Western Music offers a coordinated presentation of the diverse range of Western music and its composers. This is a provocative examination of the complexity of current military ethics in the United States. In the wake of a turbulent twenty-five-year period, the author argues that the environment in which members of the military must operate poses a severe threat to consistent moral behavior. He provides a theoretical perspective on the content, coherence, and rational justifiability of the--albeit uncodified--professional military ethic. He examines the military as a profession, the nature of professional ethics, the moral character of the laws of war, and the constitutional values of American society. Using specific examples drawn from World War II, from Vietnam, and from noncombat situations, he clarifies the moral framework within which military decisions must be made, both in time of peace and in time of war. The focus of this edition is on Avital Ronells incisive introduction.
SCUM Manifesto was considered one of the most outrageous, violent and certifiably crazy tracts when it first appeared in 1968. Valerie Solanas, the woman who shot Andy Warhol, self-published this work just before her rampage against the king of Pop Art made her a household name and resulted in her confinement to a mental institution. But the Manifesto, for all its vitriol, is impossible to dismiss as just the rantings of a lesbian lunatic. In fact, the work has indisputable prescience, not only as a radical feminist analysis light-years ahead of its timepredicting artificial insemination, ATMs, a feminist uprising against under-representation in the artsbut also as a stunning testament to the rage of an abused and destitute woman.
The focus of this edition is not on the nostalgic appeal of the work, but on Avital Ronell's incisive introduction, "Deviant Payback: The Aims of Valerie Solanas." Here is a reconsideration of Solanas's infamous text in light of her social milieu, Derrida's "The Ends of Man" (written in the same year), Judith Butler's Excitable Speech, Nietzsche's Ubermensch and notorious feminist icons from Medusa, Medea and Antigone, to Lizzie Borden, Lorenna Bobbit and Aileen Wournos, illuminating the evocative exuberance of Solanas's dark tract.

"Like fire and secrecy," writes Martin Benjamin, "compromise is both indispensable and dangerous to civilized life." Using wide-ranging examples drawn from current debates--including a variety of important medical and bioethical cases--he explores the surprisingly rich and complex notion of compromise and integrity in ethics and politics. He tackles tough questions--how practical and theoretical ethics are related, what compromise means for ethical theory, how compromise is a matter of judgment, and whether it is possible to compromise without being compromised. In the final chapter he explores the possibility of political compromise in a matter of great ethical significance--abortion. [via]

This is the new story of the Old West, told by ten historians who dare to reenvision the American West and knock the field of Western history on its ear. Some historians call it a revolution.
The Trails Conference in Santa Fe, a 1989 gathering organized by "new" western historian Patricia Nelson Limerick, spawned widespread media coverage and academic debate and provided the impetus for this volume. There, at the end of the Santa Fe Trail, leading scholars came together to discuss, debate, and evaluate an exciting new view of our past. It amounts to a far-reaching reexamination of the role of the West in U.S. history and of the field of Western history itself.
Trails brings together the best of this new work. The contributors provide a range of views that clarify the changes in Western history. They consider what the "New Western History" is, what its impact on Western history has been thus far, and where it might lead as we move into the 1990s and beyond.
These historians reject both the "tall in the saddle" myth and the concept of the frontier and its settlement described by Frederick Jackson Turner in 1893: a single, triumphant process that began with the arrival of white settlers and ended a century later when all the land was claimed. Instead, they see continuity. To them, the West is a region, washed by waves of successive emigrants over a period of 25,000 years; a place with climate, resources, and sustained damage of human habitation. [via]

Let the others wear the ruffled shirts and ride grandly on horseback; Sam Adams, Massachusetts rebel leader, was a plain and plain-spoken fellow, both in history and in Why Don't You Get a Horse, Sam Adams? Adams, it turns out, was horseless for a good reason. On the way to figuring out just what that reason was, the reader gets a nice, personal look at a leader and his times.
In this book, as in the rest of her series of histories, Jean Fritz sneaks plenty of information into her story about Adams, the American Revolution, and the answer to the title question. (For ages 7 and up) [via]
