A fur trader from 1878 to 1904, Schultz married a Pikuni (Blackfoot) woman, became a member of the tribe, and was given the Blackfoot name Apikuni. With the disappearance of the buffalo it was as difficult for Schultz to adjust to the new way of life as it was for the other Blackfeet. He took to the mountains and explored the eastern slope of the Rockies, hunting game and guiding other hunters and explorers, including George Bird Grinnell, the Baring brothers, and Ralph Pulitzer. He named mountains, glaciers, and lakes; he was the first to identify the mountain goat; and through his and Grinnells efforts the northern portion of the American Rockies was set apart as Glacier National Park.

Massive changes are taking place in society surrounding the delivery of information to individuals and the way they process this information. At work, at home, and in schools, the Internet and the World Wide Web are altering the individual's work, his leisure time, her workplace, and their educational environments. All of these changes and their consequences have traditionally been investigated largely within the domain of sociology, semiotics, mass communication, and computer science. The perspective from cognitive psychology has been lacking. The purpose of this volume is to fill this gap. The focus of the book is the cognitive effects of the modern digital environment. In addition, questions are raised about what cognitive conditions must exist for adequately processing information in multimedia environments.
Internet use routinely involves the exchange of factual information but also a large amount of information with an interpersonal character is communicated. A socio-psychological perspective is needed to understand both kinds of communication, also to be able to design appropriate support tools. In Cognition in a Digital World, the emphasis is on the psychological analysis of interactive and continuing communication and discourse, rather than on the technical aspects of the individual's interaction at the interface.
The three main themes of this volume are:
*conditions and consequences of multimedia information processing by the individual;
*socio-psychological characteristics of information transfer over the World Wide Web; and
*analysis of computer-mediated collaborative communication.
Cognition in a Digital World will be of interest to a wide audience of researchers and students in the fields of cognitive science, education, communication sciences, computer science and the arts (discourse analysis).

John Wrights thorough, up-to-date revision of Clyde Pharrs Homeric Greek is presented by the University of Oklahoma Press for use in first-year Greek courses in colleges and preparatory schools. This revised edition adds concise sections on grammar that will be of immense aid to the student who has not previously learned Latin grammar. With a judicious hand Wright has removed some extraneous commentary on the Iliad, but the essence of Pharrs textwhich has stood the test of timehas been left untouched.
Pharr explains in his eloquent introduction why the ideal approach to the language is with Homer rather than with the writers of Attic Greek. The Homeric method has, indeed, met with remarkable success; Wrights newly revised text will undoubtedly spark fresh enthusiasm in both students and professors of Greek.
While this book contains more than the first-year student could easily master, it does not attempt to catalog every stray Homeric form . Its first object is to teach beginners to read Greek intelligently and with pleasure.

María Montoya Martínez, or Marie, as she sometimes signs her pottery, is a woman who has become in her own lifetime a legend. She lives in the pueblo of San Ildefonso, near Santa Fé, New Mexico, and although her life has been, as closely as she could make it, the normal life of a woman of her culture, her unusual qualities have set her apart and gained her fame throughout the world.
Through her mastery of pottery-making, María brought economic gain to her family and her village. However, distressing problems accompanied success and fame. Liquor ultimately wrecked Julían. There was dissension within the pueblo. And there was the succession of admiring white people who invaded her home and interrupted her work. Not least, in María view, was the departure of her own children from many Pueblo customs.
Inextricably woven into the story of María is the story of the pottery of the Southwestern Pueblos, a native craft that has become a national art interest, including the development of the unique black-on-black ware by Julián, the first of which is reproduced among the illustrations.
Margaret Lefrancs many accurate drawings of actual pieces of pottery provide an almost complete documentary history of the craft and show some of the finest examples of Marías art. Her skilled pen has also interpreted faithfully the spirit of María, the Pueblo Indians, and the pottery.

Ovid is a poet to enjoy, declares William S. Anderson in his introduction to this textbook. And Andersons skillful introduction and enlightening textual commentary will indeed make it a joy to use.
In these books Ovid begins to leave the conflict between men and the gods to concentrate on the relations among human beings. Subjects of the stories include Arachne and Niobe; Tereus, Procne, and Philomela; Medea and Jason; Orpheus and Eurydice; and many others, familiar and unfamiliar. For students of Latin-and teachers, too-they provide an interesting experience.
In his introduction the editor discusses Ovids career, the reputation of the Metamorphoses during Ovids time and after, and the various manuscripts that exist or have been known to exist. He describes the general plan of the poem, its main theme, and the problem of its tone. Technical matters, such as style and meter, are also considered. In notes the editor summarizes the story being told before proceeding to the line-by-line textual comments.

In the past 20 years the field of second language acquisition has developed into an independent and autonomous discipline complete with its own research agenda. In addition, there has been an increase in the number of conferences - of both a general and a topical nature - dealing exclusively with this topic, as well as special sessions on second language acquisition as part of larger conferences. Furthermore, the field now has journals devoted exclusively to its study as well as numerous edited volumes concentrating on specific subareas. Dealing with the ways in which second languages are learned, the authors take a multidisciplinary approach by presenting research emanating from other well-established disciplines - sociology, psychology, education and linguistics. The content is limited, for the most part, to a discussion of adult second language acquisition. Designed to be used in an introductory course for undergraduate or graduate students, the authors' goal is to make the information available to students with a wide variety of backgrounds. This volume was born out of the belief that the complexities of the field can and should be brought to the attention of many students - those intending to delve further into the field and those only curious about the pervasive phenomenon of learning a second language. The companion workbook audiocassette package for this text is available under Sorace Gass Selinker. [via]

The tainted sheriff in this narrative is Henry Plummer, who arrived in Nevada City, a gold camp in Californias high Sierra, in 1852 and soon had two murders to his credit-both the results of bawdy-house brawls. Ten years later he was a full-fledged villain directing a gang of criminals. In 1863 Plummer moved into the Territory of Idaho, which included present-day Montana, and was elected sheriff despite his doubtful past. But it was there that he ran afoul of the vigilantes, and the story of the chase, capture, trial, and execution of Henry Plummers road agents surpasses the wildest imagination of any Hollywood writer.

The American West looms large in popular imagination-a place where men were rugged and independent, violent and courageous. In this mythic West all the men were white, and the women were largely absent. The few female actors played supporting roles around the edges of the drama. Molded by the Victorian Cult of True Womanhood, they were passive, dependent, reluctant, and out of place. Men "won" the West. Women, against their better judgement, followed them to this "newly discovered" place and tried to re-create the amenities of the urban East.Or so the myth goes. The Women's West challenges this picture as racist, sexist, and romantic and rejects the customary emphasis of traditional western history on the nineteenth-century frontier, discovered and defined by Anglo men. In its place The Women's West begins the construction of a new western history as complex and varied as the people who lived it.This collection of twenty-one articles creates a multidimensional portrait of western women. The pioneer women presented here were actors in their own lives, not passive participants in their husbands' ventures. They were hardy seekers who came west, sometimes alone, in search of jobs, freedom, or land to homestead. They were political activists who worked tirelessly to win the right to vote and to hold political office. They adapted in practical ways to their own and their families' economic and personal needs in a new environment. [via]
