"Literary journalist," "lowly social historian," "chronicler of his times," and "champion of realism" are among the many epithets heaped upon Tom Wolfe by himself and his myriad admirers and critics. In this collection of interviews spanning his richly productive career, Wolfe is seen as a writer imitating no one and riding the crest of each latest wave in contemporary America.
For more than a quarter of a century he has been the vivid and varied chronicler of our time--from the Californian car customizers and Ken Kesey's Merry Pranksters of the sixties to the ambition-driven inhabitants of New York City in the eighties. His hybrid of reporting and fiction-writing has received perhaps more applause than any other literary journalism, and his first major work of fiction, Bonfire of the Vanities, rested at the top of the bestseller lists for more than a year.
Here is Tom Wolfe talking--about the subjects of his eight books, about the writers he admires, about the discipline of writing, about his politics and his disposition to satire and parody. As he explains his attempt "to show the world 'life in our times,'" this collection of delightfully witty and informative interviews reveals the insights and the intellect of one of America's brightest and most appealing authors. The Dramatic Imagination is one of the few enduring works written about set design. Robert Edmond Jones's innovations in set design and lighting brought new ideas to the stage, but it is greater understanding of design - its role at the heart of theatre - that has continued to inspire theatre students. The volume includes 'A New Kind of Drama,' 'To a Young Stage Designer' and six other of Jones's 'reflections.' [via]

The seven artists featured in this volume demonstrate the creative heights of rubber stamp and correspondence art. Sandra Mizumoto Posey, an almost fanatical rubber stamper, traces the history of impressed art back to the days of Mesopotamian cylinder seals. Rubber stamps, she notes, have been the tools of such artistic notables as Marcel Duchamp and Andy Warhol. Today the production of rubber stamps has evolved into a multimillion-dollar industry with a customer base that includes casual users, hobbyists, and artistic professionals. Although they live in an age of instantaneous electronic communication, many rubber-stamp artists connect with each other by mail. Their letters and packages - sometimes whimsical, always original and ornate - move through the relatively languorous channels of the U.S. postal service. This book explores the fascinating network fostered by such networking. [via]

On the evening of 14 April 1865 when President Abraham Lincoln was assassinated in Ford's Theatre, an entire audience was witness to the tragedy. From diaries, letters, depositions, affidavits, and periodicals, here is a collection of accounts from a variety of theatergoers--who by chance saw one of the truly pivotal events in U.S. history. Providing minute first-hand details recorded over a span of ninety years, We Saw Lincoln Shot explores an event that will forever be the subject of debate and controversy.
"I was present at the theater and saw it all," said Samuel Koontz. "In fact I was only about fifteen feet from the President when he was shot, although he was in a private box in the theater." In a letter to his parent Jason S. Knox wrote: "Dear Father, It is with sad feeling that I take up my pen and address you. Last Friday night at ten o'clock, I witnessed the saddest tragedy ever enacted in this country. Notwithstanding my promise to you not to visit the theater, I could not resist the temptation to see General Grant and the President, and when the curtain at Ford's rose on the play of 'Our American Cousin,' my roommate and I were seated on the second row of orchestra seats, just beneath the President's box." Although there have been many studies of the Lincoln assassination, few have been devoted to the actual event. Overwhelmingly, historians have been attracted to the conspiracy that preceded Lincoln's death or to the aftermath. Too few have relied sufficiently upon eyewitness accounts, and some, without considering how the human mind fails to preserve minute details in long-term memory, have trusted recollections transcribed many years after Lincoln died. With a sharp focus upon the circumstances reported by one hundred actual witnesses, We Saw Lincoln Shot provides vivid documentation of a momentous evening and exposes errors that have been perpetuated as the assassination has been rendered into written histories. Although she is eminent primarily as the prize-winning author of classic works of fiction, Eudora Welty is notable also as an astute literary critic. Her essays on the art of fiction and on the writers who enlarged the range of the short story and the novel are definitive pieces. Her distinguished book reviews, along with her critical essays, augment her reputation for being one of the most discerning author-critics in literary America.
This collection of her book reviews manifests the connecting of her penetrating eye with her responsive intellect in forming sympathetic judgments of the books she reviewed. Between 1942 and 1984 Welty wrote sixty-seven reviews of seventy-four books. Fifty-eight of these appeared in the New York Times Book Review , and others in the Saturday Review of Literature, Tomorrow, theHudson Review, the New York Post, and the Sewanee Review. The reviewed books include novels, short story collections, books of essays, biographies and memoirs, books of letters, children's books, books of ghost stories, photography books, books of literary criticism, and books of World War II art.
Over nearly half a century she reviewed books by some of the foremost authors of her time: Virginia Woolf, William Faulkner, V.S. Pritchett, Colette, Isak Dinesen, E.B. White, E.M. Forster, J.D. Salinger, Ross Macdonald, Patrick White, S.J. Perelman, Annie DIllard, Elizabeth Bowen, and Katherine Anne Porter.
A Writer's Eye includes all of Welty's book reviews, even one published in the
Welty's keen vision, her wit, and her refined style make these "monuments to interruption," a phrase she wrote in description of Virginia Woolf's essays and reviews, an important record of her literary standards and special interests. They show us as well how book reviewing consumed a large measure of creative time that she customarily devoted to fiction writing. Placed beside her authoritative critical essays, this volume enhances Welty's considerable literary stature and completes the image of Eudora Welty as a consummate woman of letters.
Eudora Welty, (1909-2001), was one of the twentieth-century's most critically-acclaimed authors and a master of the short story. Her literary canon encompasses works of fiction and nonfiction including essays, book reviews, and a best-selling memoir. Pearl Amelia McHaney is associate professor of English at Georgia State University.
