You know that "we come in peace" business? Bite me.' Stargate SG-1 has, like a fine wine, matured over six seasons from a basic movie spin-off into the best science-fiction show on television. And one that includes, within its impressive arsenal of strengths, a sly and laconic humour - heavily pushed by the personality of its leading man and executive producer, Richard Dean Anderson. The series is witty, inventive, surprising in all sorts of ways, and massively popular across the globe. It has tackled some very serious issues, but it's also loads of fun - full of pithy dialogue and knowing winks to its audience. In Beyond the Gate, an indispensable unofficial and unauthorised guide to the Stargate universe, acclaimed author Keith Topping breaks down each of the series' 100-plus episodes, analyses the elements and recurring themes that make it so popular, uncovers possible influences, acknowledges the moments when logic simply flies out of the window and provides trivia for use at dinner-parties and conventions. Suitable for Web designers and developers alike, Cascading Style Sheets: Separating Content from Presentation provides an extremely approachable guide to some of the latest thinking on cascading style sheets for separating out content from presentation. Filled with useful advice on coping with the real difficulties of using CSS in the real world, this book fills a valuable niche with its compact format and savvy advice from the field.
The practical perspective on today's CSS and XHTML standards, as well as an excellent eye for Web design, helps to distinguish this text. After a tour of the evolution of today's Web standards, from HTML to XHTML to CSS used to format underlying content, the authors provide plenty of actual pages using style sheets. They work slowly to build a basic set of terms and techniques with style sheets. There's good coverage of all the options here, like inline and external CSS and most everything in between.
We liked the book's coverage of font and type from a design perspective, before digging in to using CSS to format text. (This approach helps show what you should aim for when you present Web pages built with CSS.) Extensive samples of a variety of Web page styles using multicolumn formats will get you started on your own Web pages, regardless of your site's requirements.
The book closes with several standout sections on coping with the admitted difficulties of getting CSS to work correctly on all of today's major browsers (including Netscape and Internet Explorer). The authors provide specific suggestions for overcoming known incompatibilities, as well as suggesting general techniques for troubleshooting and testing your site across different browsers. Final samples show off CSS and XHTML used for three case studies: a photo gallery, a personal log, and an online store.
With its practical suggestions for using CSS in real projects and a generally approachable style, this book offers a truly winning combination. It's perfect for anyone who wants to get a better knowledge of CSS used to build Web pages that will look good across a range of today's browsers. --Richard Dragan [via]

With over half a decade of service as a war correspondent in Vietnam, John Laurence earned deserved accolades for his reportage, especially for his documentary The World of Charlie Company. In this superb book, The Cat from Hue, he returns to that time, drawing on long-buried memories to capture the confusion, deceit, and terror of the era.
In 1968, John Laurence unhappily found himself dodging bullets and poking among ruins of the ancient Vietnamese city of Hue, eventually wandering square into the sights of a gun held by a North Vietnamese soldier, who could easily have shot him dead but did not. It was not his first encounter with mortal danger, and not his last; as this long, intricately constructed memoir unfolds, death greets the reader on nearly every page, along with the more mundane facts of war--the language of soldiers, the things they carried, the numbed resignation to battle as "an edge against fear." (Superstition plays a role, too: Laurence figured that the "coins, charms, four-leaf clovers, religious medals and all kinds of talismans" that he kept with him would somehow shield him from bullets, as perhaps they did.) In the company of a shell-shocked kitten, the cat of his book's title, Laurence goes on to document the lives and deaths of young soldiers during the invasion of Cambodia, men who, though personally decent in the main, were part of "a monster that inflicted so much random violence and death it produced an entire new body of evil, a catalogue of cruelty that overshadowed any possible virtue that might have come from defeating the Communists."
Harrowing, sometimes hallucinatory, written from among the weeds and rubble, and one of the best in a crowded field, Laurence's book deserves the widest possible audience. --Gregory McNamee [via]

Thanks to so many of today's star chefs producing classic hearty meals as their signature dishes, we are all rediscovering the delights of our native puddings, both sweet and savory; Steak and Kidney Pudding, Pease Pudding and Bread and Butter Pudding are all now appearing on the smartest restaurant menus -- and rightly so.
The culinary pendulum is swinging back to a style of eating consisting of simple, unfussy plates of delicious slow-cooked meats and gently stewed seasonal fruits, many of which virtually cook themselves, and allowing us to eat well without expensive, imported ingredients. As well as a wonderful collection of recipes which spans flummeries, syllabubs, fools, fritters, dumplings, pies and tarts, Mary Norwak also gives us a fascinating insight into the history of all these now popular dishes.
Mary Norwak has been a food writer for many years, and has written more than 100 cookery books. An intriguing part of the Flash scripting language is the XML object, and Flash XML StudioLab shows how to use it to build powerful dynamic Web applications. To enjoy this book you need to know Flash, but the XML aspect is explained from scratch. In fact, the first four chapters offer a general introduction to XML, which is useful or irritating depending on how well you know the subject already. Chapter 5 gets onto the real story, introducing ActionScript's XML object. The next chapter gives an example, using XML to manage a set of tarot cards. The same example is continued in the subsequent chapters, showing how to search and examine the XML data, and how to upload and download XML content. Next comes an event-handling example. The scene changes for a look at a Flash chat client using XML along with Perl on the server, and then comes a chapter on integrating an online database using PHP, MySQL, Flash and XML. The final chapter shows how to draw on XML news feeds in Flash. Two appendices offer a general look at advanced XML, including DTDs, Schemas and XSL, and a short Perl primer to help with Web server programming.
A book on Flash and XML is a great idea, and this title will undoubtedly get you started and inspire some creative thinking. It is spoilt by an uneven style and the space given to general XML background that can easily be found elsewhere. Even so, it's a good read for Flash developers who want to use dynamic XML content in their Web designs. --Tim Anderson [via]

Another example of Shakespeare's comic fascination with the battle between and misunderstanding of the sexes, Love's Labour's Lost is a difficult play to read, but one which is extremely effective on stage. The Play opens with King Ferdinand of Navarre and his courtiers taking a vow of study and sexual abstinence for a period of three years. However, their vows are soon placed under strain with the arrival of the Princess of France and her ladies in waiting. The inevitable happens, and the different couples attempt to surreptitiously communicate, causing much hilarious confusion and embarrassment in the process. Shakespeare deploys every farcical element in the book, including impersonation, wrongly delivered letters, outrageous puns and word play, fights, drunkenness and masquerades, as Ferdinand's entourage soon learn that rather than running from women to books, it is in fact the opposite sex that "are the books, the arts, the academes/That show, contain, and nourish all the world". However, one of the most interesting aspects of the play is that it does not end with everyone marrying and living happily ever after. The women give as good as they get from the men, and in the end turn the tables in extremely interesting ways. One of Shakespeare's most linguistically challenging, but also intelligent comedies. --Jerry Brotton [via]

Gwen Raverat, the granddaughter of Charles Darwin, described Period Piece, her classic memoir of an English childhood in the late 19th century, as a drawing of the world when I was young. The observations of the small incidents in her life, recorded here both in pen portraits and line drawings, reveal an artist s careful eye. Vividly evoking a bygone era, it is a shrewd, touching and comic portrait of her childhood, her eccentric relations and of Cambridge society and university. Since she was renowned as a book illustrator, it is not surprising that her line drawings for Period Piece are a masterpiece of controlled wit and charm all on their own. [via]

General Wesley K Clark was Supreme Allied Commander of NATO forces in Europe between 1997 and 2000, and in Waging Modern War he recounts how he masterminded "Operation Allied Force", the ultimately successful war against Serbia in Kosovo throughout the early months of 1999. However, this is no simple-minded military memoir. As a West Point graduate and Rhodes Scholar, Clark was regarded as both an intellectual and a hawk, a difficult position that led to a series of awkward political encounters throughout the military campaign. One of the most absorbing dimensions of the book is Clark's description of how he
...was torn between the guidance and perspective I gained from NATO, heavily influenced by the Department of State, the Foreign and Commonwealth Office, Downing Street, and the White House, and what I would hear in my US military chain reporting to the Pentagon. As Clark increasingly pushed for a land invasion, US political interference ensured that the completion of the operation became even more difficult. Clark's clashes with both Slobodan Milosevic and US Secretary of Defence William Cohen are both fascinating insights into contemporary realpolitik, while President Clinton remains a remarkably shadowy, ambivalent figure on the political margins of Clarke's book.
Waging Modern War is also an ambitious statement on the changing nature of warfare. Clark argues that Kosovo represented "modern war--limited, carefully constrained in geography, scope, weaponry and effects. Every measure of escalation was excruciatingly weighed". This is a timely reassessment of the political and military shape of the world in the aftermath of the Cold War by someone operating at its very heart. Clark emerges as a quiet but determined and ferociously competitive figure, who has written a formidably detailed account of Europe's first, and hopefully last "modern war". --Jerry Brotton [via]
