Once there was a little girl--an orphaned African princess--who narrowly escaped death by human sacrifice in a West African village in 1850. A British sea captain named Frederick E. Forbes saved her life by talking King Gezo of Dahomey into giving the girl to Queen Victoria of England as a gift: "She would be a present from the King of the blacks to the Queen of the Whites." As impossible as this tale sounds, it is a true one. Award-winning author Walter Dean Myers--piecing together her story from letters he found in a rare book and ephemera shop in London--paints a hauntingly detached portrait of the small African princess whom the heroic captain named Sarah Forbes Bonetta.
We follow her charmed but unlucky life as the Queen's protégée through a succession of British middle-class households, beginning with the Forbes home. Because of her celebrated association and frequent visits with the Queen, Sarah grows up in an unusual position of privilege, education, and celebrity. On the flip side, she is keenly aware that her decisions are not her own, and as a rescued orphan under the Queen's protection, her life's path is dictated by those acting in what they perceive to be her best interests. It is hard not to feel that it was cruel of her protectors to wrench her (more than once in her life) from the adopted family she adores, and eventually to encourage her to marry a West African businessman whom she clearly stated she could never love, and who would take her away from her adopted country. As the epilogue states, "She was both unfortunate in her losses, and fortunate that those losses were not greater.... She seemed to find a measure of comfort wherever she was, but was destined to be apart from the world in which she lived." This story, rich with historic prints, photographs, newspaper clippings, excerpts from Queen Victoria's diary, and Sarah's letters, is both fascinating and tragic. We have Myers to thank for rescuing this fine woman again--this time from the forgotten shelf of a London bookstore. (Ages 11 and older) [via]

For anyone who writes scripts in the awk family of languages, the third edition of Effective awk Programming provides an in-depth guide to processing text files with plenty of working sample code. Whether you are starting out with awk or are an experienced developer, this book will help you extend the reach of your awk scripts.
This tutorial covers the entire spectrum of awk script development: From the basics of opening, searching, and transforming text files, to a comprehensive tutorial for regular expressions, to more advanced features like internetworking. The focus is on the practical side of creating and running awk scripts, and there's plenty of hands-on advice for installing and running today's awk (and gawk).
The book begins with the fundamentals of awk for opening and transforming text flat files. The coverage of regular expressions, from simple rules for matching text to more advanced options, is particularly solid. You learn how to add variables and expressions for more intelligent awk scripts, plus how to parse data into records and fields. You'll also find out how to redirect output from awk scripts to other programs, a useful technique that can cause awk to get a lot more done in real applications.
Later, you learn several valuable sample awk scripts that mimic existing Unix utilities (like grep, id, and split), plus samples for counting words in documents and printing mailing labels, and even a stream editor. This grab bag of sample code lets you try out the techniques presented earlier in the book. Other sections look at support for networking in today's gawk; for example, how gawk can read and write to URLs on the network almost just as easily as local files. Full sample code will teach the beginner or expert how to get productive with networks and awk. Final appendices trace the evolution of the awk language and show you how to download and install gawk.
Suitable for beginner and experienced awk developers, Effective awk Programming, Third Edition, is an extremely worthwhile source of information on a wide range of programming techniques for today's awk. --Richard Dragan

Today's web sites have moved far beyond "brochureware." They are larger and more complex, have great strategic value to their sponsors, and their users are busier and less forgiving. Designers, information architects, and web site managers are required to juggle vast amounts of information, frequent changes, new technologies, and sometimes even multiple objectives, making some web sites look like a fast-growing but poorly planned city-roads everywhere, but impossible to navigate. Well-planned information architecture has never been as essential as it is now.
Information Architecture for the World Wide Web, 2nd Edition, shows you how to blend aesthetics and mechanics for distinctive, cohesive web sites that work. Most books on web development concentrate on either the graphics or the technical issues of a site. This book focuses on the framework that holds the two together.
This edition contains more than 75% new material. You'll find updated chapters on organization, labeling, navigation, and searching; and a new chapter on thesauri, controlled vocabularies and metadata will help you understand the interconnectedness of these systems. The authors have expanded the methodology chapters to include a more interdisciplinary collection of tools and techniques. They've also complemented the top-down strategies of the first edition with bottom-up approaches that enable distributed, emergent solutions.
A whole new section addresses the opportunities and challenges of practicing information architecture, while another section discusses how that work impacts and is influenced by the broader organizational context. New case studies provide models for creating enterprise intranet portals and online communities. Finally, you'll find pointers to a wealth of essential information architecture resources, many of which did not exist a few years ago.
By applying the principles outlined in this completely updated classic, you'll build web sites and intranets that are easier to navigate and appealing to your users, as well as scalable and simple to maintain. Information Architecture for the World Wide Web, 2nd Edition is a treasure trove of ideas and practical advice for anyone involved in building or maintaining a large, complex web site or intranet.

› Find signed collectible books: 'Java and XML'
Two hot topics come together in this developer's guide from Brett McLaughlin, Java and XML. Both Java and XML are cross-platform technologies; by using Java for code and XML for transporting data, you can build truly portable applications. This title is aimed at intermediate to advanced programmers; while XML topics are explained more or less from scratch, readers will need prior knowledge of Java.
The book begins with an overview of XML and its uses, and goes on to explain how to parse XML by using the Simple API for XML (SAX 2). Next, there is coverage of how XML is validated by using Document Type Definitions (DTDs) and XML Schema, and transformed by using eXtensible Stylesheet Language (XSL). Brief coverage of Sun's Java API for XML is followed by a detailed look at the Java Document Object Model (JDOM), a new API devised by the author in association with O'Reilly, the publisher.
The last part of the book is more advanced, and covers applications of XML and Java. There are chapters on Web-publishing frameworks, XML Remote Procedure Calls (RPCs), using XML to read and write configuration data, and generating XML with Java. There is also a short business-to-business example. Appendices provide an API reference to the various specifications discussed in the book.
The strengths of Java and XML include the author's deep knowledge of his subject, and a writing style that is both clear and enthusiastic. If you happen to know a lot about Java and not much about XML, this is the ideal title. Readers who already have a good grasp of XML basics might be frustrated by the amount of introductory material. --Tim Anderson [via]

› Find signed collectible books: 'Java Performance Tuning'
Java applications are often seen as slower than native code apps--it's part of the cost of platform independence and ease of use. However, there are speed-up techniques modern coders ignore with fast CPUs and huge memories to cover for them.
Java Performance Tuning covers techniques applicable to coding in any programming language with those specific to not just Java but particular versions. Shirazi starts with an illuminating discussion of real speed versus the user's perception of speed, threading, caching, streaming, bench-marking and choosing what to measure.
Examples of generally applicable speed-up techniques include obvious examples such as moving unnecessary calculations to the outside of loops while Java-specific techniques include avoiding garbage collection. Some techniques are also applicable with other object-oriented languages; for example, reusing objects instead of recreating them.
The text is clear and readable. Everything discussed is shown as code examples with percentage timings to give an idea of the gains you can make. There is also extensive discussion on choosing algorithms.
Shirazi's coverage of distributed programs is particularly enlightening as they suffer from different bottlenecks, at least from a user point of view. Making a user feel the program is faster is often more a matter of retaining the user's attention than actually increasing speed--the Internet, for example, is unlikely to respond to code enhancements.
Because a better understanding of the way your programs work also makes for greater memory efficiency, more robustness and a better user experience--as well as more speed--this book will dramatically improve your programs. --Steve Patient [via]

› Find signed collectible books: 'Java Servlet Programming'
Aimed at Web developers with some previous Java experience, Java Servlet Programming, 2nd Edition, offers a solid introduction to the world of Java development with servlets and related technologies. Newly updated with over a half-dozen new chapters and thoroughly revised, this title brings an already useful text up to speed with some leading-edge material. It excels particularly in explaining how to program dynamic Web content using Java servlets, with a fine introduction to all the APIs, programming techniques and tips you will need to be successful with this standard.
Besides being a useful guide to APIs, the book looks at a variety of techniques for saving session state, as well as showing how servlets can work together to power Web sites. You will learn performance tips and ways to get servlets to work together (such as forwarding and redirection), plus the basics of database programming with JDBC to build content with "live" data. A later chapter examines what's next for servlets with the emerging Servlet 2.3 API standard. Importantly, the authors go over deploying and configuring Web applications by editing XML files, a must-have for successfully running servlets in real applications.
Since the first edition of this title, the choices for Java Web developers have grown much richer. Many of the new chapters in this edition look at options beyond servlets. Short sections on application frameworks such as Tea, WebMacro, the Element Construction Set (ECS), XMLC and JavaServer Pages (JSPs) let you explore what's out there for Java developers today with a survey of some current tools that can speed up creating new Web applications.
The text closes with reference sections on servlet APIs (and other material) that will be useful for any working developer. Although servlets are not the only game in town, they are still important tools for successful Web development. This updated edition shows you just how to do it with plenty of basic and advanced tips for taking full advantage of this powerful Java standard. --Richard Dragan [via]

Good programming--which is to say, programming that yields both efficient code and a profitable life for the programmer--depends on not reinventing the wheel. If someone else has solved the problem you're facing (and someone almost always has), you'd be foolish to waste your energy figuring out your own solution. MySQL Cookbook presents solutions to scores of problems related to the MySQL database server. Readers stand a good chance of finding a ready-made solution to problems such as querying databases, validating and formatting data, importing and exporting values, and using advanced features like session tracking and transactions. Paul DuBois has done a great job assembling efficient solutions to common database programming problems, and teaches his readers a lot about MySQL and its attendant APIs in the process.
DuBois organizes his cookbook's recipes into sections on the problem, the solution stated simply, and the solution implemented in code and discussed. The implementation and discussion sections are the most valuable, as they contain the command sequences, code listings, and design explanations that can be transferred to outside projects. The main gripe readers will have about MySQL Cookbook is that the author, in his effort to cover the range of MySQL-friendly programming languages, uses different languages in his solutions to various problems. You'll see a Perl solution to one programming challenge (Perl, in fact, is the most frequently used language, followed by PHP), a Python fix for the next, and a Java sample after that. Readers have to hope that they find a solution in the language they're working with, or that they're able to transliterate the one DuBois has provided. It's usually not a big problem. --David Wall
Topics covered: How to make MySQL databases do your bidding--in terms of queries, table manipulation, data formatting, transactions, and Web interfaces--through the database server's command line interfaces and (more importantly) through the MySQL APIs of Perl, PHP, Java, and Python. Particularly excellent coverage deals with formatting dates and times, management of null values, string manipulation, and import/export techniques. [via]

› Find signed collectible books: '.Net Framework: Essentials'
Microsoft's .NET Framework borrows many concepts from Java but is currently only available on Windows. In .NET Framework Essential s the authors begin by describing .NET's architectural underpinnings, starting with the CLR--Common Language Runtime which underlies the Framework Base Classes--and the Common Language Specification.
The authors explain how the CLR supports PE--Portable Executable--files programmed in C#, Managed C++ and VB.NET. .NET Asemblies contain Intermediate Language and Metadata, which underlies PE file interoperability. .NET Framework tools extend interoperability to existing COM object s. Also covered are the joys of no more DLL hell or object registration.
.NET includes the Common Programming Model, which means once you know how to do something in one language you can do it in others. Suddenly, your programming skills are highly transferable. But most of the book is about the CLM services: I/O, Web, networking and so on; and how to use them. Naturally, ADO.NET and XML integration feature in all this and you'll learn it's place in Web Services, Windows Forms and We b Forms.
The concise example code neatly demonstrates the points the authors make as well as providing starting points for your own experiments with . NET programming.
.NET Framework Essentials leverages the knowledge of working Windows programmers to put the .NET Framework in context. Think of it as a springboard high enough to give you an overall view of the technology and enable you to dive in. A clear and lucid introduction to a complex new set of technologies. --Steve Patient [via]

In the course of their investigations into Leonardo da Vinci and the Turin Shroud, the authors found clues in the work of the great Renaissance artist that pointed to the existence of a secret underground religion. More clues were found in a 20th century London church. These were the beginnings of a quest through time and space that led the authors into the mysterious world of secret societies and such bodies as the Freemasons, the Knights Templar and the Cathars and finally back to the ideas and beliefs of the 1st century AD and a new view of the real character and motives of the founder of Christianity and the role of John the Baptist and Mary Magdalene. They reveal a secret history, preserved through the centuries but encoded in works of art and even in the great Gothic cathedrals, whose revelation could shake the foundations of the Church. [via]
