While the 'nature' which Aristotle announces as the subject of his Physics bears little resemblance or relevance to modern scientific concepts of nature, his treatise dominated science down to the age of Galileo and remains of crucial importance to the historian of the philosophy of science. Ross's edition of the Greek text is accompanied by an introduction, analysis (printed continuously following the text), and commentary. In his substantial Introduction, Ross discusses Aristotle's natural philosophy at some length, as well as describing the structure of the work and details of textual sources. [via]

An introduction to the principal forms and orders of Western liturgy between about 900 and 1700, this book explains their nature and basic historical origin, and presents in detail the contents and orders of principal services as well as additional and special forms of worship. This book emphasizes the mainstream of Western liturgy derived from the medieval Roman Rite as found in secular and monastic churches. After the Reformation it concentrates on the rites of the Roman Catholic church and the Church of England. Harper discusses the nature of liturgy and provides an historical summary and individual chapters on medieval churches and their communities, the Christian calendar, medieval liturgical books, the Psalms, the Office, the Mass, Processions and Additional Observances, Holy Week and Easter, the Tridentine Rite, and the English Book of Common Prayer. Harper concludes with two chapters which raise the problems of establishing the order of a liturgical service, and introduces selected medieval sources accessible in facsimile or edition. A select, annotated bibliography and a glossary of ecclesiastical and liturgical terms are included. [via]

This book demonstrates how Homeric poetry manages to confer significance on persons and actions, interpreting the world and the lives of the people who inhabit it. Taking central themes like characterization, death, and the gods, the author argues that current ideas of the limitations of "oral poetry" are unreal, and that Homer embodies a view of the world both unique and profound. It is high treason in British law to imagine the king's death. But after the execution of Louis XVI in 1793, everyone in Britain must have found themselves imagining that the same fate might befall George III. How easy was it to distinguish between fantasising about the death of George and imagining it, in the legal sense of intending or designing? John Barrell examines this question in the context of the political trials of the mid-1790s and the controversies they generated. He shows how the law of treason was adapted in the years following Louis's death to punish what was acknowledged to be a "modern" form of treason unheard of when the law had been framed. The result, he argues, was the invention of a new and imaginary reading, a "figurative" treason, by which the question of who was imagining the king's death, the supposed traitors or those who charged them with treason, became inseparable. Mozart's collaborations with the librettist Lorenzo Da Ponte led to the composition of three of the great masterpieces of opera. This book, designed to guide the reader to a deeper understanding and appreciation of these enigmatic works, charts the musical, cultural, and social context in which they were written--the tastes and expectations of the contemporary opera audience, Mozart's intentions and aspirations in a period of rapid intellectual and political change, Da Ponte's views of opera, and the practical logistics of opera production at the time. Together, these strands provide illuminating insights into Mozart's creative process and the functions of eighteenth-century opera. [via]

This survey of the most significant modern composers and their techniques has become a standard work on the constantly shifting musical developments during the greater part of the twentieth century. Archaic Naukratis was a busy trading place in the Western Delta of the Nile, renowned for its sanctuaries and courtesans, granting the Greeks access to Egyptian grain and luxury items. Now, more than one hundred years after the discovery and excavation of Naukratis, the author offers the first full-length analysis of the archaeology and archaic history of this important site.
Although Naukratis always features in modern accounts of ancient Greek colonization, it was not a place where the Greeks could freely establish their own political and social organization--it was under the strict control of the Egyptian pharaoh and his officials. To understand the special status of Naukratis, the author takes the port of trade model, surveying the political, social, and economic background of both Late Period Egypt and archaic Greece.
A major section of the book comprises an archaeological re-evaluation of the topography of archaic Naukratis and its material finds. The sanctuaries, archaic pottery styles, terracottas, faiences, statuettes, and other small finds are examined in the light of recent scholarship, and an in-depth study of the literary evidence is brought to bear on the archaeological material.
This book comprises a significant contribution to our understanding of Graeco-Egyptian relations during the seventh and sixth centuries BC and also demonstrates that Polanyian economic theory can play an invaluable rôle in the ongoing debate about the concepts best employed to analyse the ancient Greek economy. This beautiful new edition of Shakespeare's complete works--"The Oxford Shakespeare"--is the product of eight years of full-time research by a team of British and American scholars and represents the most thorough examination ever undertaken of the nature and authority of the early documents.
The edition abounds in unique features. It is the first volume to provide edited texts of King Lear both as Shakespeare originally wrote it and as it was revised for performance somes years later. Other plays, such as Hamlet, Othello, and Troilus and Cressida, are based on what recent research identifies as Shakespeare's revised text. Major textual alternatives--first versions of revised passages, omitted lines--are printed as additional passages. All stage directions have been reconsidered in light of original staging, and many new directions for essential action have been added. Specially designed brackets idenify conjectural stage direction and speech prefixes. In most respects, the text is identical to that of the "old-spelling" edition, but spelling and punctuation have been freshly modernized. There is a General Introduction along with brief, factual introductions to each work.
Elegantly (and Readably) designed, this book will undoubtedly become a treasure for lovers of Shakespeare throughout the English-speaking world.
About the Editors:
Stanley Wells, Head of the Shakespeare Department at OUP-UK, is a Fellow at Balliol College, Oxford. He is the author of many books and articles on Shakespeare.
Gary Taylor, who holds degrees from the Universities of Kansas and Cambridge, is the author of several books and articles on Shakespeare, including To Analyze Delight: A Hedonist Criticism of Shakespeare. [via]

Tarrant has freshly collated the oldest fragments and manuscripts and has drawn more fully than previous editors on the twelfth-century manuscripts, the earliest extant witnesses to many potentially original readings. He has also given more scope to conjecture than other recent editors, and has been readier than his predecessors to identify certain verses as interpolated.
