The first book in a trilogy--and in many respects the best of the bunch--The Colonial Experience is an essential interpretation of how the habits of people who lived more than two centuries ago shaped the lives of modern Americans. Boorstin shows how an undiscovered continent shattered long-standing traditions and utopian fantasies with the hard demands of everyday life far from the sophisticated centers of European civilization: "Old categories were shaken up, and new situations revealed unsuspected uses for old knowledge," writes Boorstin. He starts with a series of penetrating essays on the Puritans of Massachusetts, the Quakers of Pennsylvania, the philanthropists of Georgia, and the planters of Virginia, then tackles a set of diffuse topics that range from astronomy to language to medicine in fascinating vignettes.
The Colonial Experience is must reading for anybody interested in the development of the American character. --John J. Miller [via]

Conan Doyle is best known for his creation of Sherlock Holmes, but he was much more than a facile populist writer, a symbol of the triumphalism of Edwardian England. He was also an ambitious man of letters, a searcher for political and theological truth, and a leader and shaper of opinion. This biography analyzes the man behind the mask: the Catholic who rejected Rome and religion; the atheist who later adopted spiritualism; the family man who loved another woman throughout his marriage; and the father of Sherlock Holmes, who wished to destroy his detective son. An account by Mary and Anne Wilson of their travels in Europe from January to October 1847 with their brother John. Mary kept a detailed diary of everything they did and saw. She describes the local museums, ruins and other sights of each place they visit. She also notes the local habits, diet and costumes of the people they encounter and gives her opinion of them. Her sister Anne was an artist and kept a constant record of their travels. The book is illustrated with reproductions of both her sketches and watercolours. The narrative gives an insight into the social history not only of the areas they visited but of the attitudes of these Victorian women abroad. [via]

› Find signed collectible books: 'A Gift Imprisoned: The Poetic Life of Matthew Arnold'
Matthew Arnold, who wrote some of the most beautiful poetry of the Victorian period, with lyrics that are peculiarly appropriate to the alienated longeurs of modern existence, should, it seems, enjoy a higher reputation today. Yet he distrusted his own poetic genius and effectively stifled it after its early blossoming. He devoted his maturity instead to writing worthy but unexciting prose criticism. His motives, and the extraordinary tension between passion and repression in the poetry he did write, are both excellently explored in Ian Hamilton's critical biography. The title of the study comes from W.H. Auden's assessment of Arnold's career: "He thrust his gift in prison till it died." Hamilton outlines that prison--the Victorian upbringing, the unhappy love affair that was beyond the pale of 19th-century convention and was thus abandoned, and the painful retreat from poetry--the one thing Arnold did best, deftly and wittily. Read Arnold's "To Marguerite--Continued" (surely the bleakest and most beautiful statement of hopeless love in the language); then read this book for its expertly sketched account of the life behind the poetry. --Adam Roberts [via]

Harry Potter and the Philosopher's Stone Cassette Travel Bag is a complete and unabridged reading by Stephen Fry on six cassettes, contained in a travel box. A CD travel bag is also available.
Just when it seems that there cannot possibly be another twist to the Harry Potter tale, Stephen Fry dons his haughtiest and naughtiest tones to bring Harry Potter and the Philosopher's Stone to vibrant life on audio. Harry Potter has spent the first 10 years of his life at the mercy of the dreadful Dursleys--the aunt, uncle and fat, spoilt brat of a cousin who reluctantly gave him a home after the death of his mother and father. But on his 11th birthday Harry discovers that he is no ordinary boy, and despite the best efforts of his hideous relatives he escapes to Hogwarts School of Witchcraft and Wizardry to begin his new life as a trainee wizard. And the rest, as they say, is history...
As Harry battles against the evils thrown in his path, Stephen Fry injects the proceedings with a wry, dry and extremely contagious humour that perfectly suits the tale, wringing out the best in Harry and his cohorts as they get to grips with their new lives at the sharp end of Hogwarts. Fry's innate upper-class drone is perfectly suited to the telling of this most magical tale, cracking into the high-pitched squawking of Hermione the swat, or the gentle tones of the firm but fair Dumbledore, or the evil sniping of slimey Snape at precisely the right moments.
Harry Potter and the Philosopher's Stone is a fine story and much has been written about its success, but until you have heard Fry's cracking reading of this most magical of stories then you simply haven't lived. As with any audio book, this one is perfect for car journeys and an ideal way of introducing reluctant readers to the magic that is Harry Potter. (Ages 9 and over) --Susan Harrison

This report considers contemporary family life, observing that many families no longer fit the model for "successful" family life. Does this mean that the family is in crisis? Or are the cracks in its structure symptoms of the need for more democracy in the family and a radical new attitude towards sex and intimacy? This book looks into psycho-sexual identity within the nuclear family and aims to provide a new perspective to the debate. Men and women, teenage boys and girls, answer the Hite questionnaire and reveal their experiences of family life. Hite draws on these results to make her conclusions about lives inside family walls. The book details the subjects of: sensuality, eroticism and the boundaries of physical intimacy; parents attitudes to their children's developing sexuality; learning "masculinity" and "femininity"; erotic undercurrents in parent-child relationships; violent physical intimacy and its link with sexuality; and physic loyalties and betrayals between parents and children. Having produced illustrative cartoons for the "New Statesman" in the early 1980s, Will Self went on to publish spot cartoons for many different journals. The best of these are reproduced in this volume together with features and critical articles written for others. The material is mostly concerned with the politics, culture and ritual of intoxication. From Cryonicists in LA to narcs in Amsterdam, Self examines examples of weirdness. He is the author of "The Quantity Theory of Insanity", shortlisted for the 1992 John Llewellyn Rhys Prize and winner of the 1993 Geoffrey Faber Memorial Prize, and of "Cock & Bull", "My Idea of Fun" and "Grey Area". Much has been written about the doodlebugs, V2 rockets, and other advanced technologies that the Nazis used to terrorize Europe during World War II. But there is a less well-known story: under the barrage of Allied bombing, German scientists were secretly devising plans for an incredible battery of weapons that had the potential to drastically affect the outcome of the war. There were designs for a hypersonic space plane -- a manned V1 flying bomb from which the hapless pilot would eject moments after aiming his craft at an Allied target -- and plans for aircraft that consisted only of wings. There were dozens of other prototypes that were technologically way ahead of their time -- against which the Allies would have been helpless. Exhaustively researched and grippingly written, Last Talons of the Eagle shows how history might well have been very different had these craft ever flown. [via]

Approaching her subject with wit, perspicacity and huge affection, Laura Thompson, like Mitford, makes her serious points lightly. The relationship between Freddie Mercury and Jim Hutton evolved over several months in 1984 and 1985. Even when they first slept together Button had no idea who Mercury was, and when the star told him his name it meant nothing to him. Hutton worked as a barber at the Savoy Hotel and retained his job and his lodgings in Sutton, Surrey, for two years after moving in with Mercury, and then worked as his gardener. He was never fully assimilated into Mercury's jet-setting lifestyle, nor did he want to be, but from 1985 until Mercury's death in 1991 he was closer to him than anyone and knew all Mercury's closest friends: the other members of Queen, Elton John, David Bowie, Phil Collins to name a few. Ever present at the countless Sunday lunch gatherings and opulent parties, Hutton has a wealth of anecdotes about as well as a deep understanding of, Mercury's life. He also nursed Mercury through his terminal illness, often held him throughout the night in his final weeks, and was with him as he died. No one can tell the story of the last few years of Mercury's private life - the ecstasies and the agonies - more accurately or honestly than Jim Hutton. [via]
