Courtship, love, and marriage are seen today as very private affairs, and historians have generally concluded that after the late-18th century young people began to enjoy great autonomy in courtship and decisions about marriage. This work argues that freedom in 19th-century English Canada was constrained by an intricate social, institutional, and familial framework which greatly influenced the behaviour of young couples both before and after marriage. In 1615 Englishman Gervase Markham published a handbook for housewives containing "all the virtuous knowledges and actions both of the mind and body, which ought to be in any complete housewife." Markham reveals the "pretty and curious secrets" of preparing everything from simple foods to such elaborate meals as a "humble feast" - an undertaking which entails preparing "no less than two and thirty dishes, which is as much as can stand on one table." He instructs the housewife on brewing beer and caring for wine, growing flax and hemp for thread, and spinning and dyeing. As a housewife was also responsible for the health and "soundness of body" of her family, he includes advice on the prevention of everything from the plague to baldness and bad breath. No other source from this period provides the same richness of information in such a readable style. Michael Best's introduction and his abundant notes make "The English Housewife" readily accessible to the contemporary reader. Michael R. Best is Professor of English, University of Victoria. [via]

Subtitled "How We Are Ruining Our Public Schools," this study of Canadian education, by a former teacher at the high school and university level and former deputy minister of education in British Columbia, is not as negative as title and subtitle suggest. The author believes that Canadian schools have generally succeeded in educating the population, noting the high level of literacy. But he believes schools, teachers, governments, and parents could do much more to make Canadian schools the ultimate force for cohesion in a society fragmented by political, cultural, and linguistic pressures. Ungerleider takes a wide-ranging and thorough view of Canadian education, exploring a number of subjects including poverty's affect on schooling, special needs students, unions, the drive for choice in education, the failure of leadership, and so on. At times, he overstates and repeats the obvious, such as the truism that Canadians place a high value on education. While his focus is British Columbia, which is understandable considering his background, he makes an honest attempt to cover Ontario as well. Perhaps one of his most intriguing points is that schooling today is "bland and inoffensive.... Education necessarily involves uncertainty and controversy." There is certainly controversy aplenty around education today, as the author so clearly details, but little enough in the classroom itself where, he points out, parents and community groups resist the introduction of controversial ideas. --Mark Frutkin [via]

Anne Michaels, an accomplished poet, has already published two collections of poetry in her native Canada. She turns her hand to fiction in an impressive debut novel, Fugitive Pieces. This is the story of Jakob Beer, a Polish Jew, translator, and poet who, as a child, witnessed his family's slaughter at the hands of the Nazis. Beer himself was found and smuggled out of Poland by Athos Roussos, a Greek archaeologist who carried him back to Greece and kept him there in precarious safety. After the war they emigrated together to Canada. Jakob's story is told through diaries discovered by Ben, a young man whose parents are Holocaust survivors and who is a vessel for their memories just as Jakob is the bearer of his own.
Fugitive Pieces is a book about memory and forgetting. How is it possible to love the living when our hearts are still with the dead? What is the difference between what historical fact tells us and what we remember? More than that, the novel is a meditation on the power of language to free our souls and allow us to find our own destinies. [via]

Charismatic, bicultural, and intellectual, Pierre Trudeau was the towering figure of the Canadian 20th century. For a complete picture of his legacy one can look to his influential early political essays and to the excellent biographies by Richard Gwyn as well as Christina McCall and Stephen Clarkson, but the first place to turn is Trudeau's own account, in his 1993 Memoirs. It was crazy. It was unthinkable. It was the adventure of a lifetime.
When Don and Dana Starkell left Winnipeg in a tiny three-seater canoe, they had no idea of the dangers that lay ahead. Two years and 12,180 miles later, father and son had each paddled nearly twenty million strokes, slept on beaches, in jungles and fields, dined on tapir, shark, and heaps of roasted ants.
They encountered piranhas, wild pigs, and hungry alligators. They were arrested, shot at, taken for spies and drug smugglers, and set upon by pirates. They had lived through terrifying hurricanes, food poisoning, and near starvation. And at the same time they had set a record for a thrilling, unforgettable voyage of discovery and old-fashioned adventure.

Margaret Laurence is best known for her extraordinary series of novels celebrating the fictional community of Manawaka, Manitoba. Earlier in her career, though, she lived for two years in the very different world of the Haud desert of Somaliland (now Somalia), where she explored the oral narratives of the Somalis, who at the time had no written language, and studied African culture. Her time in West Africa provided the impetus for her non-fiction account of that experience, The Prophet's Camel Bell; her first novel, This Side Jordan; her first collection of short stories, The Tomorrow-Tamer; a study of Nigerian novelists and dramatists, Long Drums and Cannons; and A Tree For Poverty: Somali Poetry and Prose, which she edited and translated.
For The Prophet's Camel Bell, Laurence drew on diary nearly a decade after she had returned to Canada. Coming out of her study of African colonialism, the work emphasizes political and personal independence, cultural inheritance, racial equality, women's liberation, and the need to promote burgeoning national literatures, including that of Canada. It is also an astonishingly intimate memoir that complements Laurence's posthumously published Dance on the Earth. In the course of mapping out the literary geography of Somalia in The Prophet's Camel Bell, Laurence found a clearer sense of what she wanted to accomplish as a Canadian writing about Canada. This book is a fresh and forthright work of imagination and observation, and it is still a pleasure to read. --Jeffrey Canton [via]

The belief in the dullness of Canadas history is as Canadian as Confederation and grain elevators. So ingrained is the idea that, in 2000, even the government-sponsored television station CBC--not known for its adventurous programming--addressed the issue by punching up the storyline in a documentary-style mini-series with excerpts from memoirs and scenes of actors in snowshoes and deerskins. The fifth edition of Desmond Morton's A Short History of Canada could use the literary equivalent of a few such cheesy historical re-enactments. Alas, Morton is an academic--in fact the director of the McGill Institute for the Study of Canada and a former University of Toronto history professor--and his book reads like a series of lecture notes. Names, dates, and events are reeled off rapid-fire, making a scorecard necessary to keep track of who belongs to what party. This overview does, however, adequately fulfill the authors not insubstantial goal of summing up, in just under 400 pages, over 100 years of political back-stabbing, labour unrest, conflicts between eastern and western Canada and provincial and federal governments, and the numerous other events that have shaped the country. Perhaps it was Morton's desire to produce "a short history" that has resulted in a lack of telling details and anecdotes and a tendency toward avuncular generalizations such as "Booms end and love affairs cool" and "Disasters are rarely predicted and seldom come singly." Nevertheless, as the book moves into the latter half of the 20th century, the historian's grasp becomes surer, events take on added dimensions, and the text itself becomes appreciably more readable; indeed, Morton's relief at reaching the colourful Trudeau years is palpable. "Since liberation was often a matter of style, its disciples adored a prime minister who wore sandals in the House of Commons, slid down a banister at a Commonwealth conference, and told a political opponent (in Trudeau's own sanitized version) to 'fuddle duddle,'" he writes of the unconventional politician. It's enough to make Canadian history seem positively interesting. --Shawn Conner [via]

This new edition of Harold Innis's essays, published on the occasion of his centenary, assembles his most significant and representative writing. Included are many of Innis's essays on cultural issues and economic development - subjects he explored throughout his life - which have not been readily accessible before. At the start of his career Innis set out to explain the significance of price rigidities in the cultural, social and political institutions of new countries. By the end of his intellectual journey he had become one of the most influential critics of modernity. The essays in this collection address a variety of themes, including the rise of industrialism and the expansion of international markets, staples trades, critical factors in Canadian development, metropolitanism and nationality, the problems of adjustment, the political economy of communications, the economics of cultural change, and Innis's conception of the role of the intellectual as citizen. Innis succeeded as few others have in providing an astute and comprehensive account of the economic and social forces shaping modernity. His abiding interest in the contradictory and unintended consequences of markets in general, gave rise to the rich legacy of his prodigious output. [via]
