› Find signed collectible books: 'Adventures of Robinson Crusoe'
The classic tale of shipwrecked adventure, Daniel Defoe's 1719 novel "Robinson Crusoe" is the fictional autobiography of its title character. When cast ashore upon a tropical island, Robinson Crusoe must use his survival skills to find food and shelter and evade the native cannibals. A captivating tale of action and adventure, based in part on the real life adventures of Alexander Selkirk, a Scottish castaway who lived more than four years on an island in the Pacific, "Robinson Crusoe" is regarded by some as the first novel of the English language. When Marilla Cuthbert's brother, Matthew, returns home to Green Gables with a chatty redheaded orphan girl, Marilla exclaims, "But we asked for a boy. We have no use for a girl." It's not long, though, before the Cuthberts can't imagine how they could ever do without young Anne of Green Gables--but not for the original reasons they sought an orphan. Somewhere between the time Anne "confesses" to losing Marilla's amethyst pin (which she never took) in hopes of being allowed to go to a picnic, and when Anne accidentally dyes her hated carrot-red hair green, Marilla says to Matthew, "One thing's for certain, no house that Anne's in will ever be dull." And no book that she's in will be, either. This adapted version of the classic, Anne of Green Gables, introduces younger readers to the irrepressible heroine of L.M. Montgomery's many stories. Adapter M.C. Helldorfer includes only a few of Anne's mirthful and poignant adventures, yet manages to capture the freshness of one of children's literature's spunkiest, most beloved characters. There's just enough to make beginning readers want more--luckily, there's a lot more in the originals! Illustrator Ellen Beier creates vibrant pictures to portray the beauty of the land around Green Gables and the spirited nature of Anne herself. (Ages 5 to 8) --Emilie Coulter [via]

First published in 1897, Captains Courageous tells of the high-seas adventures of Harvey Cheyne, the son of an American millionaire, who, after falling from a luxury ocean liner, is rescued by the raucous crew of the fishing ship Were Here. Obstinate and spoiled at first, Harvey in due course learns diligence and responsibility and earns the camaraderie of the seamen, who treat him as one of their own. A true test of character, Harveys months aboard the Were Here provide a delightful glimpse of life at sea and well-told morals of discipline, empathy, and self- reliance.
My first genuine out and out American story ... Its a corker... Im sinfully proud of it. -Rudyard Kipling [via]

This timely book is designed to meet the needs of those who offer a modern introductory course in genetics. As research in the field of genetics becomes increasingly complex, it is more challenging to teach introductory students its foundations. The goal of this text is to help students understand the core concepts of gene transmission, mutation, expression and regulation. Additionally, the presentation encourages students to formulate genetic hypotheses, research the consequences and test the results against observed data. [via]

Above the Arctic Circle at midnight, when the August sun gently kisses the horizon, the mighty Mackenzie River reflects a spectrum of brilliance. Here, as Alexander Mackenzie left it in 1789, this silent river still glides rhythmically to the Arctic Ocean- still, after almost two centuries, untamed and unmarred. How could this magnificent spectacle ever have been one man's river of disappointment? This exquisite moment, accented by the stillness of air and the vastness of river and sky, held me hypnotized in the footsteps of Canada's great explorer. What a glorious beginning to a nine month adventure that would take me accross five provinces of Canada and twenty-two of the United States! I would follow the trails of explorerswhose varied lives led them to unknown horizons, along trails now pathways in history. My challenge was to identify settings of their work, capture scenes they saw at the appropriate seasons in similar weather, record the wilderness they knew where it still survives. Along these trails, I know I shared some of their impressions. I felt a tinge of panic at being lost... the madness of no escape from black flies and mosquitos in an Arctic summer... the shortness of breath and the paradoxical burning sensation of nose and cheeks in minus 40 degree cold. I knew the weight of lonliness as I stood beneath a heavy, slate-gray sky on the barren coast of Hudson Bay, where surveyor David Thompson first landed as a boy at the age of 14. Moving through the humid low country of Georgia, with William Beltram's verbal and artistic portraits at hand, I could touch the complexity of life in this floral web. Other adventures of destiny-Lewis and Clark, John Charles Fremont, Kit Carson, the friars Escalante and Dminiguez, Daniel Boone and the grizzled mountain men- took me along to share their vistas and byways of solitude. Take this book to a quiet place... stand beside the trails now made famous by history. As you read, pause now and then to listen carefully for the sounds of their footsteps- you are no longer seperated in time. [via]

Hugh Brody first encountered hunting peoples when he lived among the Inuit of the High Arctic, who instructed him not only how to speak but how to do and be Inuk-titut, "in the manner of an Inuk." Since then he has spent nearly three decades studying, learning from, crusading for, and thinking about hunter-gatherers, who survive at the margins of the vast, fertile lands occupied by farming peoples and their descendants, now the great majority of the world's population.
In material terms, the hunters have been all but vanquished, yet in this profound and passionate book, Brody utterly dispels the notion that theirs is a lesser way of life. Drawing on his experiences among indigenous peoples as well as on the work of linguists, historians, and fellow anthropologists, he reveals the systems of thought, belief, and practice that distinguish the hunters from the farmers. Whereas the farmers are doomed to the geographical and spiritual restlessness embodied in the story of Genesis, Brody argues, the hunters' deep attachment to the place and ways of their ancestors stems from an enviable sense, distinctively expressed in thought, language, and behavior, that they are part of a web of relationships in the natural and spiritual worlds. Brody's aim, however, is not to elevate one mode of being over another; rather, it is to suggest that we might move beyond the familiar dichotomies and become more fully human. [via]
