This translation is intended primarily for classroom use. It is aimed first of all at being clear and true to the basic meaning of the text. After that Paul Woodruff has tried to bring across some of the beauty of poetry given the chorus as well as the rhetorical power and cleverness of the dialogue and speeches. The translation of this play through manuscript is unusually troublesome; many lines seem to have fallen out during copying and storage over the centuries and many errors have been introduced Although the author has supplied a few lines to fill small gaps where the meaning is obvious, he has not devised speeches to make up for the lost passages at the end; instead the author has included an appendix with the main evidence that pertains to them. This 1986 classic is not only an excellent introduction to the Wiccan religion and earth-based religions in general, it's also a workbook that can take the serious student to the equivalent level of third-degree Gardnerian. Though Raymond Buckland was a student of the late great Gerald Gardner, this manual does not adhere to a specific branch or denomination of witchcraft, but rather seeks to teach the elements and philosophies common to all, whether Celtic, Saxon, Finnish, or what have you. Buckland is credited with bringing the "old religion" to the U.S., and covens and solitary witches practicing the craft in the U.S. today have him to thank for getting it out of the closet. While Buckland's Complete Book of Witchcraft is a must-have for any serious Wiccan practitioner, it is full of down-to-earth spiritual wisdom, which makes it a wonderful addition to the library of any broadminded seeker on the path toward the One. --P. This book is about the individual's journey to psychological wholeness, known in analytical psychology as the process of individuation. Edward Edinger traces the stages in this process and relates them to the search for meaning through encounters with symbolism in religion, myth, dreams, and art. For contemporary men and women, Edinger believes, the encounter with the self is equivalent to the discovery of God. The result of the dialogue between the ego and the archetypal image of God is an experience that dramatically changes the individual's worldview and makes possible a new and more meaningful way of life. A self-help book based on the stories of the nine Muses from Greek mythology, by a renowned teacher and anthropologist.
The author of the classic The Tarot Handbook, which has sold more than 200,000 copies, Angeles Arrien now provides a magical and practical guide, using as a creative road map the myths of the most famous literary songstresses and sources of creative inspiration--the nine daughters of Zeus.
In The Nine Muses, Arrien illustrates how we can inspire ourselves and see clearly the muses that abound in our own lives. She follows the stories of the Muses from Olympus, Mount Helicon, and the springs of Hippocrene that flowed from the spot struck by the hooves of Pegasus, explaining how to awaken and cultivate our gifts and talents. Like Apollo, who led the chorus of the Muses, Arrien directs readers in developing the qualities we crave to develop more fully: Instinct, Wisdom, Imagination, Life Force, and Intuitive Understanding.
Full of illustrations from Greek art, mythical stories, and assignments and exercises designed to help readers in creative endeavors--whether artistic, personal, or business-oriented--The Nine Muses demonstrates a wisdom that is as familiar and remarkably powerful now as it was for the Greek Gods.

Open the door to the ancient Norse world of magic and spirituality with The Rites of Odin by Ed Fitch. The ancient religion of Northern Europe was one of remarkable strength and power, as well as magic and beauty. Its adherents were themselves a solid and adventurous lot: the Norse, Slavs, Germans, ancient Russians, and of course, the Vikings.
The Rites of Odin is a complete sourcebook that brings the ancient values back to these turbulent times. What you read here is poetic and powerful, perfect for groups who have chose to follow the Old Ways, for families who wish to be unified by warm and close ceremonies, and for the solitary seeker.
- The history and philosophy of ancient Norse magic made practical for today
- Basic ritual preparation and design
- Seasonal festivals for groups, families, and individuals
- Protection rites
- Wedding rites
- Norse lore
- The Runes: their symbolism and use in divination
- A Rune-Talisman rite
- Crafting a drinking horn
- Brewing your own mead
The Rites of Odin puts forth the message, in rites, practice, and background lore, that you are uniquely important. You are in charge of your own destiny. The family and friends who constitute your "extended family" are also important: by working together and helping one another, all of you can prosper and be happy.
Ed Fitch, one of the founders and major scholars of modern Paganism wrote The Rites of Odin. Initiated into Gardnerian Wicca during the mid-1960s, he has continually added to the existing background lore on Wicca and mainstream Paganism, and is widely considered to be one of the best and most influential writers of rituals in the U.S. today.

Sacred psychology assumes that the deepest yearning in every human soul is to return to its spiritual source. Jean Houston is a modern-day leader in this ancient field. She points out that sacred psychology has taken the form of Socrates instructing the youth of Athens, Buddha and the Sangha, and 12th-century knights pursuing the Holy Grail. In The Search for the Beloved, Houston provides a modern-day structure for this traditional spiritual quest, incorporating personal mythology, "rites of pathos," and archetypal imagery. The Search for the Beloved remains a trustworthy tool for those who are excavating the deepest mystery of all--the discovery of creative source and destiny. [via]

Fairy tales seem to be innocent stories, yet they contain profound lessons for those who would dive deep into their waters of meaning. In this book, Marie-Louise von Franz uncovers some of the important lessons concealed in tales from around the world, drawing on the wealth of her knowledge of folklore, her experience as a psychoanalyst and a collaborator with Jung, and her great personal wisdom. Among the many topics discussed in relation to the dark side of life and human psychology, both individual and collective, are:
" How different aspects of the "shadow"all the affects and attitudes that are unconscious to the ego personalityare personified in the giants and monsters, ghosts, and demons, evil kings and wicked witches of fairy tales
" How problems of the shadow manifest differently in men and women
" What fairy tales say about the kinds of behavior and attitudes that invite evil
" How Jung's technique of Active imagination can be used to overcome overwhelming negative emotions
" How ghost stories and superstitions reflect the psychology of grieving
" What fairy tales advise us about whether to struggle against evil or turn the other cheek
Dr. von Franz concludes that ever rule of behavior that we can learn from the unconscious through fairy tales and dreams is usually a paradox: sometimes there must be a physical struggle against evil and sometimes a contest of wits, sometimes a display of strength or magic and sometimes a retreat. Above all, she shows the importance of relying on the central, authentic core of our beingthe innermost Self, which is beyond the struggle between the opposites of good and evil. [via]

Fifteen-year-old Charles Wallace Murry, whom readers first met in A Wrinkle in Time, has a little task he must accomplish. In 24 hours, a mad dictator will destroy the universe by declaring nuclear war--unless Charles Wallace can go back in time to change one of the many Might-Have-Beens in history. In an intricately layered and suspenseful journey through time, this extraordinary young man psychically enters four different people from other eras. As he perceives through their eyes "what might have been," he begins to comprehend the cosmic significance and consequences of every living creature's actions. As he witnesses first-hand the transformation of civilization from peaceful to warring times, his very existence is threatened, but the alternative is far worse.
The Murry family, also appearing in A Wind in the Door and Many Waters, acts as a carrier of Madeleine L'Engle's unique message about human responsibility for the world. Themes of good versus evil, time and space travel, and the invincibility of the human spirit predominate. Even while she entertains, L'Engle kindles the intellect, inspiring young people to ask questions of the world, and learn by challenging. (Ages 9 and older) --Emilie Coulter [via]

› Find signed collectible books: 'The Tao of Physics: An Exploration of the Parallels Between Modern Physics and Eastern Mysticism'
First published in 1975, The Tao of Physics rode the wave of fascination in exotic East Asian philosophies. Decades later, it still stands up to scrutiny, explicating not only Eastern philosophies but also how modern physics forces us into conceptions that have remarkable parallels. Covering over 3,000 years of widely divergent traditions across Asia, Capra can't help but blur lines in his generalizations. But the big picture is enough to see the value in them of experiential knowledge, the limits of objectivity, the absence of foundational matter, the interrelation of all things and events, and the fact that process is primary, not things. Capra finds the same notions in modern physics. Those approaching Eastern thought from a background of Western science will find reliable introductions here to Hinduism, Buddhism, and Taoism and learn how commonalities among these systems of thought can offer a sort of philosophical underpinning for modern science. And those approaching modern physics from a background in Eastern mysticism will find precise yet comprehensible descriptions of a Western science that may reinvigorate a hope in the positive potential of scientific knowledge. Whatever your background, The Tao of Physics is a brilliant essay on the meeting of East and West, and on the invaluable possibilities that such a union promises. --Brian Bruya [via]

Friedrich Nietzsche (1844-1900) has been proclaimed the seminal figure of modern philosophy as well as one of the most creative and critically influential geniuses in the history of secular thought. "Writing in blood" and "philosophizing with a hammer," Nietzsche scathingly criticized modern civilization's basic ideas, beliefs, and values, and boldly proclaimed that "God is dead," thereby fathering atheistic existentialism.
Thus Spake Zarathustra is Nietzsche's masterpiece. Rich in irony, poetry, and symbolism, this unique volume presents the German philosopher's major concepts: the master and slave moralities, a pervasive will to power, the heroic overman transcending good and evil, and an eternal recurrence of the same dynamic universe. A considerable part and parcel of Nietzsche's genius is his ability to make his language dance, and this is what becomes extraordinarily difficult to translate. Some have failed in the attempt while others have hardly tried. Our present translator, Thomas Wayne, is himself an aphorist of palpable genius if not yet repute, with several collections to his credit which I have been privileged to edit. He knows that wordplay is the thing wherein he'll catch the conscience of the reader. I have seen him wrestle with a particularly intractable word or phrase of Nietzsche's masterwork and snatch an exasperated success from the jaws of failure. While the great tendency among earlier translators has been to smooth out the rough edges, cut corners and sometimes omit troublesome passages outright, this one honors and respects the original as no other. First published in 1931. None of the manuscripts which have come down to us represents the original form of Marco Polo's narrative, but it is clear that certain texts are closer to the lost original than others. Entrusted with the task of preparing a new Italian edition of Marco Polo, Benedetto discovered many unknown manuscripts. He carefully edited the most famous of the manuscripts (the Geographic text) and collated it with the other best known ones.
· An invaluable index has been added to Aldo Ricci's of Benedetto's text, which includes all the identifications made in the Geographic text and also later editions by Marsden (1818), Pauthier (1865) and Yule (1871).
· The difficulty of following Polo on his many journeys has also been simplified by the process of distinguishing between those places on his main route to China and his return journey by sea to Persia and those places which he visited during his stay in China and those he never visited at all.

Often compared to Tolkien's Middle-earth or Lewis's Narnia, Ursula K. Le Guin's Earthsea is a stunning fantasy world that grabs quickly at our hearts, pulling us deeply into its imaginary realms. Four books (A Wizard of Earthsea, The Tombs of Atuan, The Farthest Shore, and Tehanu) tell the whole Earthsea cycle--a tale about a reckless, awkward boy named Sparrowhawk who becomes a wizard's apprentice after the wizard reveals Sparrowhawk's true name. The boy comes to realize that his fate may be far more important than he ever dreamed possible. Le Guin challenges her readers to think about the power of language, how in the act of naming the world around us we actually create that world. Teens, especially, will be inspired by the way Le Guin allows her characters to evolve and grow into their own powers.
In this first book, A Wizard of Earthsea readers will witness Sparrowhawk's moving rite of passage--when he discovers his true name and becomes a young man. Great challenges await Sparrowhawk, including an almost deadly battle with a sinister creature, a monster that may be his own shadow. [via]

An affordable edition of one of the great romances! The twelfth century in France experienced an efflorescence of vernacular literature, especially troubadour poetry and the genre of narrative literature that encompasses the court epic of romance. Chretien de Troyes, a native of Champagne in Northern France, is considered one of the most talented writers of romance of this period. Achieving literary greatness not so much by plot innovation as by the shaping and refining of existing and perhaps widely known material to his own purposes, de Troyes's influence on the characteristic structure, tone, and theme of medieval romance is undeniable. This translation of Ywain from the original French version avoids both archaic-sounding English and the overly modern idiom in an effort to produce a smooth, accessible and accurate text. As with de Troyes's other Arthurian romances, the principal characters and episodes of this tale are Celtic in origin, and the marvelous adventures assigned to Ywain are apparently derivative of Celtic story lore. Readers will be charmed by the appropriately urbane expression of this fine narrative, imbued as it is with the ideals and sentiments of courtly knighthood. Title of related interest from Waveland Press: Garbaty, Medieval English Literature (ISBN 9780881339505). [via]
