P. F. Kluge, author of The Edge of Paradise and a former Peace Corps volunteer in the Pacific, has written a many-layered novel set in the Philippines near the U.S. naval base of Subic Bay, in the debased beer-and-sex-soaked district of Olongapo. This entertaining and atmospheric story is also an oblique commentary on American cultural imperialism and the consequences for Americans. His protagonists are three guys who work together as Elvis impersonators in Olongapo; one portrays the young hip Elvis, one the tired movie idol, and the third the bloated caricature of his later years. These three come to represent the stages of America's own progression from lean innovator to overblown superpower. Inexorably, the local inhabitants come to regard the biggest Elvis as their savior. Hafiz, a secret Sufi, came to prominence in his day as a writer of love poems. That love transformed into an all-consuming passion for union with the divine. In The Gift, Daniel Ladinsky bestows on us the impassioned yet whimsical strains of Hafiz's ecstasy. Never forced or awkward, Ladinsky's Hafiz whispers in your ear and pounds in your chest, naming God in a hundred metaphors.
I once asked a bird,Like Fitzgerald's version of Khayyam's Rubaiyat, the language of The Gift strikes a contemporary chord, resonating in the reader's mind and then in the heart. Ladinsky's language is plain, fresh, playful--dancing with an expert cadence that invites and surprises. If it is true, as Hafiz says, that a poet is someone who can pour light into a cup, reading Ladinsky's Hafiz is like gulping down the sun. --Brian Bruya [via]

Unlike other musical genres, jazz history is firmly connected to its great performers. They are the ones who create the complexities and individual nuances that make jazz so difficult to categorize and chronicle. Including pertinent biographical information, Introduction to Jazz History continues to examine this interaction between musicians, their history, and the history of their music. The Fifth Edition updates current and ongoing stylistic trends in jazz, including the modern big bands and the new hybrids of jazz extending beyond fusion and crossover. The chronological presentation of the history is intuitive and logical. New biographical sketches for recent and historical musicians have been added to update the text. Interactive Listening Guides are now available using the CDs that accompany the text and the CDs for SCCJ (Smithsonian Collection of Classic Jazz). Together, these two sets comprise the most powerful collection of jazz recordings available in such a simple package and they are now fully interactive. [via]

The late Bruce Chatwin carved out a literary career as unique as any writer's in this century: his books included In Patagonia, a fabulist travel narrative, The Viceroy of Ouidah, a mock-historical tale of a Brazilian slave-trader in 19th century Africa, and The Songlines, his beautiful, elegiac, comic account of following the invisible pathways traced by the Australian aborigines. Chatwin was nothing if not erudite, and the vast, eclectic body of literature that underlies this tale of trekking across the outback gives it a resonance found in few other recent travel books. A poignancy, as well, since Chatwin's untimely death made The Songlines one of his last books. [via]

William Edward Burghardt Du Bois (1868-1963) is the greatest of African American intellectuals--a sociologist, historian, novelist, and activist whose astounding career spanned the nation's history from Reconstruction to the civil rights movement. Born in Massachusetts and educated at Fisk, Harvard, and the University of Berlin, Du Bois penned his epochal masterpiece, The Souls of Black Folk, in 1903. It remains his most studied and popular work; its insights into Negro life at the turn of the 20th century still ring true.
With a dash of the Victorian and Enlightenment influences that peppered his impassioned yet formal prose, the book's largely autobiographical chapters take the reader through the momentous and moody maze of Afro-American life after the Emancipation Proclamation: from poverty, the neoslavery of the sharecropper, illiteracy, miseducation, and lynching, to the heights of humanity reached by the spiritual "sorrow songs" that birthed gospel and the blues. The most memorable passages are contained in "On Booker T. Washington and Others," where Du Bois criticizes his famous contemporary's rejection of higher education and accommodationist stance toward white racism: "Mr. Washington's programme practically accepts the alleged inferiority of the Negro races," he writes, further complaining that Washington's thinking "withdraws many of the high demands of Negroes as men and American citizens." The capstone of The Souls of Black Folk, though, is Du Bois' haunting, eloquent description of the concept of the black psyche's "double consciousness," which he described as "a peculiar sensation.... One ever feels this twoness--an American, a Negro; two souls, two thoughts, two unreconciled strivings; two warring ideals in one dark body, whose dogged strength alone keeps it from being torn asunder." Thanks to W.E.B. Du Bois' commitment and foresight--and the intellectual excellence expressed in this timeless literary gem--black Americans can today look in the mirror and rejoice in their beautiful black, brown, and beige reflections. --Eugene Holley Jr. [via]

From The Civil Rights marches and antiwar moratoriums of the 1960s through Live Aid and right up to the Free Tibet concerts of today, musicians have played an essential role in raising awareness of human rights issues. In Stand and Be Counted, David Crosby tells the powerful story of why artists were willing to put themselves on the line -- often at great risk -- for causes they believe Crosby's own longtime commitment brings a compelling personal perspective to his narrative, as do his revealing interviews with fellow activists such as Elton John, Bonnie Raitt, Don Henley, Williams, Whoopi Goldberg, Jackson Browne, Melissa Etheridge, Michael Stipe, Jewel, Aretha Franklin, and Sting.
Crosby's dramatic narrative provides a "you are there" feeling as artists relate emotionally riveting events: Harry Belafonte movingly recalls the night he performed at a Martin Luther King, Jr., rally for nonviolence in the South, and Sean Lennon speaks poignantly of the men of peace who've been assassinated, including his own father, John Lennon.
Stand and Be Counted is an inspiring work that speaks to everyone of the power of acting passionately on your convictions. [via]
