London, 1958 - Soho, Notting Hill ... a world of smoky jazz clubs, coffee bars and hip hang-outs in the center of London's emerging youth culture. The young and restless - the Absolute Beginners - were creating a world as different as they dared from the traditional image of England's green and pleasant land. Follow our young photographer as he records the moments of a young teenager's life in the capital- sex, drugs and rock 'n' roll, the era of the first race riots and the lead-up to the swinging sixties. A twentieth century cult classic, Absolute Beginners remains the style bible for anyone interested in Mod culture and paints a vivid picture of a changing society with insight and sensitivity. [via]

James have been a bizarre, quixotic feature on the British musical landscape for over 15 years. The band fell together in their native Manchester in the mid-eighties and quickly became one of the leading lights of the British music scene. As the nineties developed, James penetrated the mainstream and became consistent chart-toppers while never losing the credibility earned by the quizzical intensity of their talismanic singer Tim Booth. James have now been a totem for two generations of alternative music fans, and they have entered the new millennium with their fire burning as brightly as ever. This official biography has been written after over a year of research and copious interviews with all surviving and former band members. [via]

In 1872, an Englishman photographed a running horse in California and succeeded for the first time in capturing an image of high-speed motion - the crucial breakthrough that eventually made movies possible. His patron, the philanthropist tycoon Leland Stanford, wanted to know if his trotter Occident ever lifted all four hooves at once - never suspecting what innovations Muybridge's experiments would unleash. From Muybridge's invention came Hollywood and from his patron Stanford's sponsorship of technological research came Silicon Valley - two industries that have most powerfully shaped the modern world. The story of Muybridge's own life while he was making his motion studies is equally riveting. He became an internationally renowned inventor and photographer whose pictures of the war against the Modoc Indians and the monumental landscape of the American West have now become classics - and in a blaze of publicity, stood trial for the murder of his wife's lover. Gripping and erudite, this is a fascinating biography of a true pioneer and the larger story of how time and space were revolutionised in the nineteenth century. [via]

Juxtaposing artistic and musical representations of the emotions with medical, philosophical and scientific texts in Western culture between the Renaissance and the twentieth century, the essays collected in this volume explore the ways in which emotions have been variously conceived, configured, represented and harnessed in relation to broader discourses of control, excess and refinement. Since the essays explore the interstices between disciplines (e.g. music and medicine, history of art and philosophy) and thereby disrupt established frameworks within the histories of art, music and medicine, traditional narrative accounts are challenged. Here larger historical forces come into perspective, as these papers suggest how both artistic and scientific representations of the emotions have been put to use in political, social, and religious struggles, at a variety of different levels. Irvine Welsh's controversial first novel, set on the heroin-addicted fringe of working-class youth in Edinburgh, is yet another exploration of the dark side of Scottishness. The main character, Mark Renton, is at the center of a clique of nihilistic slacker junkies with no hopes and no possibilities, and only "mind-numbing and spirit-crushing" alternatives in the straight world they despise. This particular slice of humanity has nothing left but the blackest of humor and a sharpness of wit. American readers can use the glossary in the back to translate the slang and dialect--essential, since the dialogue makes the book. This is a bleak vision sung as musical comedy. [via]

This is a stunningly written account of a fascinating life written with candour and wit. [via]

Fifteen years ago, Mercedes Lackey put pen to paper to write Arrows Of The Queen, her first novel about Valdemar, a fantasy kingdom replete with magical races and magical creatures, enemies and allies both sorcerous and mundane. This ancient land of mystery is unique even among fantasy realms, for it is protected by an elite corps -- the Heralds. These men and women gifted with extraordinary mind powers are Chosen by, and bonded with, wondrous horselike beings known as Companions. Brought by their Companions from the length and breadth of Valdemar to Haven, Valdemar's capital city, they are trained in a special school, the Collegium, and devote their lives to protecting king and kingdom. Mindspeakers, FarSeers, FarSpeakers, Firestarters, ForeSeers -- their individual talents are as varied as their backgrounds. There are even those who can channel the magical nodes in the earth itself to use for their own purposes. Garbed in their uniforms of white leather, they patrol their territory, dispensing justice and keeping the peace. They are emissaries, spies, diplomats, scouts, warriors, judges, and counselors.
With eighteen novels published, and millions of copies in print, Mercedes Lackey's Valdemar series has won the hearts of countless readers. In response to overwhelming demand on the part of her many fans, veteran editors John Helfers and Denise Little now present The Valdemar Companion. With the help and guidance of Mercedes Lackey, Helfers and Little have compiled a reader's guide to Mercedes Lackey's best-selling world of Valdemar. Included in this comprehensive work is an all-original Mercedes Lackey Valdemar novella, as well as an essay by Lackey about Valdemar, and extensive interviews with the author and her publisher. With an overview of the history of Valdemar, detailed essays on the various races and kingdoms, a substantial concordance containing entries on every major character, device and setting, and including articles on the magical races and creatures, a chapter on the diverse Valdemar fan clubs, and a section devoted to the songs of Valdemar, along with beautifully detailed maps, The Valdemar Companion is everything any Valdemar fan could wish for.

Finally, a Virginal take on the decade defined by rubber bracelets, neon clothing, asymmetrical hair, and Ronald Reagan. Colin Larkin sets up few barriers to entry--if it's musical and it happened during the '80s, it's in. He places, for example, enduring legends such as Prince--before the diminutive one chucked his name--and Madonna alongside such colleagues as Flock of Seagulls and Men Without Hats. Each artist or group merits a sound synopsis, biographical information, and a list of albums as well as a videography and bibliography where applicable. Larkin and his contributing writers are careful not to let their views interfere with readers' nostalgia trips as they pick and pluck their way through a musical era typified by extremes. Some of the decade's peaks include the first rap recording and the debut of MTV, while Debbie Gibson's "Electric Youth" and Tiffany's "I Think We're Alone Now" arguably represent its valleys. Or is it the other way around? Whether you delight in '80s music or rue the fact that you can't get "Friday I'm in Love" out of your head, this volume is an essential reference. --Jordana Moskowitz [via]

Organizing a series of music encyclopedias by decade has its benefits and pitfalls. Dream up some pop-music figure associated with the decade that gave us Charlie's Angels, Jimmy Carter, and the hustle and you're rewarded with a reasonably thorough bio and discography faster than you can say "Gilbert O'Sullivan." There are nearly 1,000 entries included in the 512-page book, many of them admirably opinionated, which is a big plus if you decide to make use of the discography ratings next time you shop for CDs. Unlike too many rate-and-review guides, the writers here aren't afraid to attach one- and two-star grades to subpar LPs. Songwriter and frequent Love Boat guest Paul Williams, for one, doesn't get anything but two stars. On the downside though, certain major performers who transcend the decade are excluded from the book. Elvis Presley died in 1977, but he's nowhere to be found. Bless Billy Swan, but is his impact on '70s music really worth a full-page assessment when Presley doesn't merit a word? --Steven Stolder [via]
