"An impressive compendium of varying but related methods of understanding the war through historical archaeology. Readers willing to expend some effort will come away with a better understanding of the Civil War."--Civil War Book Review
"Geier and Potter deliver a great book that includes archaeological fieldwork, site type diversity, and theoretical perspectives, which provide something for every reader. The authors' contributions vividly convey the battles and effects on the civilian population from participant soldier, prisoner, caregiver, commercial, and civilian perspectives. Connections between contemporary life and Civil War events are made easily here. These connections and extensive use of primary historical sources make the book an excellent undergraduate and graduate text."--Southeastern Archaeology
From the introduction:
"Archaeological Perspectives on the American Civil War is must reading for professionals, collectors, and all people interested in battlefield archaeology, the material culture of the Civil War era, and the preservation of associated sites. Because of the popularity of Civil War literature and archaeology, this well-illustrated and well-written publication will appeal to the general public, as well as to the professional community."--Edwin C. Bearss, historian emeritus, National Park Service
"Speaks to the carnage of war, figuratively and literally, as each author [investigates] the physical evidence of the war and its ramifications to those living at the time and in our culture today. There is little question that the American Civil War changed the fabric of our culture in ways that are still being felt today, and this volume provides a real and tangible link, via the material culture left behind by its participants, to that time."--Douglas D. Scott, Midwest Archaeology Center, Lincoln, Nebraska
From studies of Antietam Battlefield, site of the bloodiest day in American military history, to Andersonville, the infamous Confederate prison, these graphically illustrated essays broaden our understanding of the American Civil War. They demonstrate how historical archaeology, combined with the traditional techniques of the study of history, generates new insights into battlefield tactics, social and military history, and the effects of the war on civilians and communities. The paperback edition includes a new foreword by award-winning journalist Jim Lehrer.

Königgrätz, a city overlooking the river Elbe, was a western strongpoint of the Austrian Empire. On the morning of July 3, 1866, Prussia attacked the city against high odds and defeated the Austrian army in a single day, despite the Austrian advantage in heavy artillery and command of the high ground. The fall of Königgrätz transferred power over the German states from Austria to Prussia, marking the beginning of the German nation, a political consequence considered to be among the most important of any conflict in modern history.
The battle for the city of Königgrätznow called Hradec Králové, located in the Czech Republicwas the largest of its time, with nearly half a million troops involved. It was also the first battle where the outcome was directly determined by the availability of new technologies, including the railroad, telegraph, cast steel rifled cannon, and breech-loading rifle. It also marked a lesson in the fallacy of dependence on technology at the expense of sound strategy.
In this full account, distinguished historian Gordon A. Craig discusses the state of political affairs surrounding the battle, the personalities involved, the weaponry, and the tactics in order to recreate the battlefield in all its complexity.

March, 1945, the end of the war in Europe is in sight. It is now that crucial decisions must be made - decisions that will affect the future security of unborn generations. Everyone is weary, exhausted by war. At every level mistakes are made. The military leaders are jostling for position and prestige, their thoughts now turning to their post-war careers. And one soldier in particular has his sights set on the position of highest authority in the western world. But history still eludes the Allies. One last battle remains to be fought: the battle of the Rhur Pocket. Why does the author describe this as the battle that should never have been fought? Why did Eisenhower let Stalin's armies seize what he himself had called "the glittering prize" of Berlin? Why were Churchill's warnings ignored and Montgomery's plans over-ruled? Why, above all, did the Allied victory produce a divided Germany, with repercussions so obvious and still so painful today? Leo Kessler retells the story of that last battle, in all its tragedy and horror: the fear, the gallows humour, the moments of supreme courage or final desperation, the errors of judgement that led to so many deaths. The tank revolutionized the battlefield in World War II. In the years since, additional technological developments--including nuclear weapons, ballistic missiles, computer assisted firing, and satellite navigation--have continued to transform the face of combat. The only complete history of U.S. armed forces from the advent of the tank in battle during World War I to the campaign to drive Iraq out of Kuwait in 1991, Camp Colt to Desert Storm traces the development of doctrine for operations at the tactical and operational levels of war and translates this fighting doctrine into the development of equipment.

After the terrorist attacks of September 11, many Americans yearned to understand why Muslim extremists felt such passionate animosity toward the Western world, particularly the United States. Since that historic attack there have been many books and discussions about this very question, but few of them offer such a readable and relevant response as this excellent offering by renowned historian Bernard Lewis (What Went Wrong?). For modern Westerners, Islam is an especially foreign religion and culture to understand. For instance, Westerners typically dismiss things as unimportant when using the expression "thats history." But for those raised in Muslim households, historyeven ancient historyis just as important (if not more important) as the present. And to better understand the hostilities rooted in this historyone could start with recognizing the long-standing resentment the Islamic community harbors from having its homelands torn apart and re-packaged into random political states by occupying Europeans (Westerners). Or stretch back in time to the brutality of the Crusades. Or go straight to the U.S. political meddling in the region throughout the latter 20th century.
This is not a pity fest for Muslims. Lewis even-handedly explores the sources of Islamic antagonism toward the West while also explaining how a supposedly peace-worshipping religion could be so distorted by violent extremism. He notes that the American way of lifeespecially that of fulfillment through material gain and sexual freedomis a direct threat to Islamic values (which is why night clubsplaces where men and women publicly touch one anotherare targets of bombings). But it is basic Western democracy that especially threatens Islamic extremists, notes Lewis, because within its own community more and more Muslims are coming to value the freedom that political democracy allows. For anyone wanting an intelligent and accessible primer on the Islamic-Western conflict, this is an excellent place to begin. In the first two years of the War of 1812, the young American nation suffered setbacks at the hands of its British foe, but the most humiliating defeat occurred in August 1814, when the British navy sailed up the Potomac and landed troops near the city of Washington. The British routed the Americans at the battle of Bladensburg on the city's outskirts and then proceeded to sack Washington, burning the White House and Capitol building, and forcing President Madison and other politicians to flee. The town of Alexandria fell next, but the reeling Americans finally made a stand outside Baltimore, led by the spirited resistance of Ft. McHenry. The war ended with the Treaty of Ghent in December 1814, restoring the relationship between the U.S. and Britain to prewar conditions. This was the first severe test of the new American nation and confirmed that the country would retain the independence won a quarter-century earlier.
In The Darkest Day, Charles G. Muller explains the political crisis that precipitated America's "second war of independence" and then provides an accurate and colorful account of the campaign's land and naval engagements, using official documents and eyewitness reports from both sides.

Captain Bligh (yes, the guy from the Bounty) needs to be rescued, and the Royal Navy has the perfect man for the job: Captain Jack Aubrey. With his friend and cloak-and-dagger expert Stephen Maturin in tow, Aubrey sets off for Australia. Several factors, including an attractive spy and a small-scale epidemic, conspire to change his plans, and before long his frigate is being pursued into Antarctic waters by a Dutch man-of-war. Five installments into the series, the Aubrey-Maturin story remains (to quote The Observer) "the best thing afloat since Horatio Hornblower." [via]

It was quite probably the most important event of World War II. Yet the story of the bombing of Hiroshima, the momentous flight into the future of the B-29 Enola Gay, was never before revealed from firsthand sources.
Award-winning writers Thomas and Witts separate myth from reality as they retrace the steps that led the world into the atomic age. Maj. Claude Eatherly, believed by so many to be the Hiroshima pilot who later went insane out of remorse, wasn't aboard the Enola Gay. The real pilot, Col. Paul Tibbets, was said to be unwilling to talk. He talked to the authors of this book for fifty hours. The authors then talked to each surviving crew member, to the scientists and soldiers whose war effort pointed in one direction, toward August 6, 1945, when the first aerial drop of a uranium bomb wiped out most of a city but, ironically, did not stop the war.
Counterpointed against the Americans' experiences, we get the firsthand story of the Japanese on the ground: Lt. Yokoyama, the zealous young officer whose antiaircraft battery protected Hiroshima from aerial attack; Mayor Awaya of Hiroshima, who brought his family from the dangers of Tokyo to the safety of Hiroshima; Gen. Hata of the Second Area Army, who regarded Hiroshima as the center of the vast network of defenses against the expected Allied invasion; Prof. Asada, the world-renowned scientist who thought he was perfecting a weapon even more terrifying than the atomic bomb; Dr. Shima, whose hospital was at ground zero.
In addition to their extensive interviews with participants on both sides, the authors had access to previously classified private diaries and government documents. From these, they reconstructed the unmatched drama of men racing to perfect -- and others learning to safely drop -- the untested and most feared bomb in the world, while in Japan, the Imperial Army planned a defense, centered in Hiroshima, that would take an estimated million Allied lives.

The popularity and credibility of charismatic news anchor Tom Brokaw ensured bestseller status for The Greatest Generation, Brokaw's homage to the Americans who survived and overcame the depression and World War II. The Greatest Generation Speaks expands his thesis that we owe a huge debt of gratitude to those tough and courageous men and women for ensuring the freedoms and comforts that Americans enjoy today. Their stories, culled from letters, interviews, and personal histories of the Greatest Generation and their family members, are anecdotal but extremely powerful, showing how men and women were sustained by simple ideals of patriotism, family, and fair play. This individualistic portrait is exactly how Americans saw themselves: Brokaw's book is a valid reflection of the times.
During a period of economic hardship and in a country united by the war effort, choices were simple; few people questioned why America was fighting Germany and Japan. Adversity brought out the best, especially in an optimistic culture like America's. As the soldier who found Beethoven's pianos in a Weimar house says after his unit is shelled, "Nothing like a close call to make the morning more beautiful." The greatest impression that war veterans seem to carry back from war is a sense of comradeship that, in spite of pain and loss, render their war years the most rewarding of all their life experiences. Modern life doesn't necessarily have the same certainties. The Greatest Generation Speaks is a healthy reminder of the foundations on which American society is built. --John Stevenson [via]

Widely regarded as the best eyewitness account of the Battle of New Orleans, Arsene LaCarriere Latour's Historical Memoir records first-hand the dramatic events of the climactic military campaign of the War of 1812. This revised and expanded edition includes a substantial new biographical introduction based on a group of manuscripts relating to the battle recently acquired from Latour's descendants in France. Only months after the battle ended, Latour, who was General Andrew Jackson's principal army engineer, began interviewing witnesses and key participants in order to create a comprehensive record based on first-hand accounts. The work's most significant value derives from these accounts---of numerous individuals who participated in a crucial moment in history of the United States---reproduced in the book's appendix. As the first full-length treatment of the New Orleans campaign, the book also offers perceptive analysis of battle preparations, terrain, and strategy by the man who designed many of the American defenses. This new edition also includes nine three-color maps illustrating the course of the battle. Latour characterized it as a conflict, which preserved our country from conquest and desolation. As a key figure in the conflict who knew many of the other main actors and personally collected their reports and observations, Latour provides a record which will never be replaced. [via]

Still stinging from the loss of its American colonies, England in the 1790s suddenly found itself facing a danger next door as Irish revolutionaries, aided by the France of Napoleon Bonaparte, threatened rebellion. At the end of 1796, a French fleet attempted to land thousands of soldiers on the Irish coast with the intent of driving English rule from Ireland, but the plan was ruined by poor planning and worse weather. Within two years, an uprising by a revolutionary group, the United Irishmen, broke out, and Ireland was racked by a summer of widespread fighting, which climaxed when another French force actually landed and fought battles against British troops.
This abridged "bicentennial edition" of Thomas Pakenham's definitive work on the 1798 uprising, The Year of Liberty, tells the story quickly, making good use of contemporary illustrations, including maps and paintings of the fighting as well as reproductions of revolutionary proclamations. What the rebels and their French allies hoped would be a year that would see Ireland set free turned utterly tragic, as both sides committed atrocities and the Marquis Cornwallis, who had surrendered Yorktown to Washington during his service in America, took command of the British forces and tried to restore order. In the end, the French general and his troops surrendered, were treated with honor, and sailed back to France, while the Irish rebels who fought with them were hunted down and slaughtered, and the causes of Catholic emancipation and Irish independence suffered setbacks that would not be overcome for decades. --Robert McNamara [via]
