Die Architektur wird zum Seelenzustand, zu etwas, das psychologische Rückschlüsse zulässt -- für welche Art Mensch zum Beispiel haben die Architekten das Sicherheitssystem der Pariser Bibliothèque Nationale entwickelt?
Sebalds Sprache erinnert in ihrer Klarheit und Bestimmtheit gelegentlich an Thomas Bernhard, wenngleich die schlimmsten Ereignisse ohne Übertreibung beschrieben werden. Wo kommen die Waren her, die im Theresienstädter Laden auf den Tischen ausliegen? In diesem Buch ohne Kapitel oder Absätze sind Fotos ein wichtiger Bestandteil.
Statt des Exils beschreibt Sebalds Roman auf bewegende Weise die Suche nach der eigenen Vergangenheit. Wie kann Austerlitz die Heimat verlassen, wenn er sich an sie nicht erinnern kann, nicht mal weiß, wo sie gewesen ist? Der ausführliche Mittelteil des Buches beschreibt die Reise nach Prag, Theresienstadt und das dazugehörige dunkle Kapitel mitteleuropäischer Geschichte. Den Stillstand der Zeit zwischen Kindertransport (von Prag nach England, 1939, als Fünfjähriger) und der Abreise aus Prag mit wiedergefundener Identität in den 50er-Jahren.
Austerlitz versucht, "das Bild der von dem Wanderer durchquerten beinahe schon in der Vergessenheit geratenen Landschaft" heraufzubeschwören. Dabei empfindet er ein Gefühl des Widerwillens und des Ekels. Die Exkurse zu den verschiedensten Themen sind wertvolle Anregungen und wichtiger Teil dieser seelischen Landschaft. Künstlerinformation:Johann Wolfgang Goethe (geadelt 1782) wurde am 28. August 1749 in Frankfurt am Main geboren und starb am 22. März 1832 in Weimar. Das Lebensgefühl des Unverstandenen, der seine Ideale lebt, war mir vertraut. Dem seichten Alltag die extremen Gefühle vorzuziehen, schien auch mir erstrebenswert. Nicht lauwarm, sondern heiß und kalt. Damit spricht Hesse noch immer die Jugend an.
Heute lese und verstehe ich ihn anders. Der Mensch, der sich das Leben so schwer macht, tut mir leid, weil er nicht merkt, daß er ebenso borniert ist wie die, von denen er sich unterscheiden will. Er nimmt sich selbst zu ernst, rennt Idealen von Schönheit und Menschlichkeit hinterher und verachtet dabei die Menschen. Erst im Magischen Theater werden ihm die Augen geöffnet.
Der Steppenwolf ist in Hesses Leben und Werk ein Wendepunkt. Eine langjährige Krise kommt zum Höhepunkt und wird überwunden -- durch das Lachen über sich selbst. Für mich ist an diesem Roman faszinierend, daß er "mitwächst" und mir auch nach zwanzig Jahren noch etwas zu sagen hat.
