A good student article can get you a high grade, a good law review editorial board position, and a publication credit. These credentials can in turn help get you jobs, clerkships, and-if you're so inclined-teaching positions. The experience will hone your writing, which is probably a lawyer's most important skill. Likewise, a good article written while you're clerking or in your early years as a practicing lawyer can impress employers (academic and otherwise) and clients.
Your article may influence judges, lawyers, and legislators. Law is one of the few disciplines where second-year graduate students write (not just co-write) scholarly articles; and these articles are often taken seriously by others in the profession. Lawyers read them, scholars discuss them, and courts-including the U.S. Supreme Court-cite them. Occasionally, student articles and articles by young practicing lawyers have a huge impact.
Writing an article, whether as a law review note, as an independent study project, or as a side project in your first years in practice, is also one of the hardest things you will do. Your pre-law-school writing experience and your first-year writing class will help prepare you for it, but only partly. It's not easy to create an original scholarly work that contributes to our understanding of the law.
Seminar papers tend to be less ambitious and less time-consuming, partly because they don't have to be publishable. But they too help improve your writing-and if you invest enough effort into writing them, you can then easily make them publishable, even if publication isn't a seminar requirement.
This text gives some advice, based on the author's own writing experience and discussions with others. [via]

"The challenge, then, is not to invent new victims or new scapegoats but to mobilize America for the future. What would it take to ensure that all of us can succeed at getting the job done, the problem solved, and the future more secure?"
As a student at Yale Law School in 1974, Lani Guinier attended a class with a white male professor who addressed all the students, male and female, as "gentlemen." To him the greeting was a form of honorific, evoking the values of traditional legal education. To her it was profoundly alienating.
Years later Guinier began a study of female law students with her colleagues, Michelle Fine and Jane Balin, to try to understand the frustrations of women law students in male-dominated schools. Women are now entering law schools in large numbers, but too often many still do not feel welcome. As one says, "I used to be very driven, competitive. Then I started to realize that all my effort was getting me nowhere. I just stopped caring. I am scarred forever."
After interviewing hundreds of women with similar stories, the authors conclude that conventional one-size-fits-all approaches to legal education discourage many women who could otherwise succeed and, even more, fail to help all students realize their full potential as legal problem-solvers.
In Becoming Gentlemen Guinier, Fine, and Balin dare us to question what it means to become qualified, what a fair goal in education might be, and what we can learn from the experience of women law students about teaching and evaluating students in general. Including the authors' original study and two essays and a personal afterword by Lani Guinier, the book challenges us to work toward a more just society, based on ideals of cooperation, the resources of diversity, and the values of teamwork. It is divided into five sections, viz:--Section T.--Persons Employed;,. II.--Output of Mineral; III.--Accidents; IV.--Prosecutions; V.--General Remarks; to which are appended (1) a list of fatal accidents; (2) a list of prosecutions. SECTION I. Persons Employed. The following table ia compiled from the annual returns made under Section 33, and shows the number of mines at work and the number of persons employed below ground and above ground in each of the counties comprised by the inspection district:--In Brecon there appear to have been 74 fewer persons employed underground, and 25 more aboveground, as compared with the figures for 1900. In Carmarthen there was an increase of 298 in underground workers, and of 154 in those employed on the surface. In Pembroke there was an increase of 44 underground, but a decrease of 24 on the surface. With regard to Glamorgan, where by far the largest number is employed, it is impracticable to make any comparison, in consequence of the division of the district. SECTION II. Output of Mineral. And with the publication of the 3rd Edition, Black's Law Pocket Dictionary is now the most up-to-date pocket law dictionary available from any publisher. Bridging the Gap Between College and Law School will help students make the transition from their undergraduate experience to law school learning. Unlike other "introduction to law school" texts, Bridging the Gap offers a different approach. The text explains the "why" of law, providing students with the context necessary to understand why law school is taught in a certain manner. It also explains the "how" of the law, setting out a step-by-step process that will help students adapt to the law school setting. Finally, this text explains the "what" of the law, giving students the opportunity to practice the problem-solving process by providing numerous exercises in a variety of subject matter areas.
Most other "introduction to law school" books only provide general advice. On the other hand, subject-specific aids offer only black letter law and some practice problems, but fail to explain the overall context or provide a problem-solving process. Bridging the Gap does all three - it provides the context, the process, and the problems. Written by two law school professors who use these techniques in the classroom every day, Bridging the Gap is a guide to what really works in law school. [via]

› Find signed collectible books: 'Plain English for Lawyers'
Wydick s Plain English for Lawyers--now in its fifth edition--has been a favorite of law students, legal writing teachers, lawyers, and judges for over 25 years.
In January 2005, the Legal Writing Institute gave Wydick its Golden Pen Award for having written Plain English for Lawyers. The Legal Writing Institute is a non-profit organization that provides a forum for discussion and scholarship about legal writing, analysis, and research. The Institute has over 1,300 members representing all of the ABA-accredited law schools in the United States. Its membership also includes law teachers from other nations, English teachers, and practicing lawyers.
The LWI award states: 'Plain English for Lawyers . . . has become a classic. Perhaps no single work has done more to improve the writing of lawyers and law students and to promote the modern trend toward a clear, plain style of legal writing.'
In 2003 Wydick retired after 32 years on the law faculty of the University of California, Davis. But he still teaches his favorite course -- a seminar in advanced legal writing for third-year law students. For the past eight summers he has also lectured at the International Legislative Drafting Institute presented in New Orleans by the Public Law Center, a joint venture of Tulane and Loyola law schools. There the audience consists of lawyers and non-lawyers from abroad who earn their living drafting legislation in many different languages. 'Teaching at the Institute,' Wydick says, 'is a precious opportunity to learn how much we English-users have in common with people who write laws in other languages.'
How does the fifth edition of Plain English for Lawyers differ from its predecessors? It remains (in size only!) a little book, small enough and palatable enough not to intimidate over-loaded law students. 'Most of the text remains the same,' Wydick says, 'but in the past seven years I ve learned some new things about writing in English, and I want to share that with the readers.' In addition, the exercises at the end of the chapters are different (a welcome change for long-time teachers who are tired of the old ones). Finally, the teacher's manual includes additional exercises that teachers can give to students who want or need extra practice. [via]
