The ageing King Lear calls his daughters, Goneril, Regan and Cordelia to witness that he wishes "to shake all cares and business from our age" and divide his kingdom between his three children. When Cordelia refuses to flatter her father with sycophantic words of love, her banishment leads to chaos and civil war as Lear's disastrous "division of the kingdom" gives free reign to the greed and ambition of his two remaining daughters.
As Lear sinks into rage and madness he is deserted by everyone except his "bitter" Fool, the loyal Kent and the exiled Cordelia. The play descends into a nighmarish theatre of cruelty and absurdity as Lear realises he has "ta'en / Too little care" of the poverty and corruption of his kingdom, and his loyal but foolish friend Gloucester has his eyes gouged out. Metaphors of monstrosity and perversions of nature structure the dramatic action, and the play's ending remains one of the most harrowing in all of Shakespeare. Many see a profound despair and nihilism in King Lear, and would agree with Kent's conclusion that "All's cheerless, dark and deadly". Für Hans Musbach ist sie lange aufgegangen. Dank eines harmonischen Familienlebens, Erfüllung im Lehrerberuf und moralischer Rückendeckung durch seine geliebten Klassiker glaubte er "diese Jahre abgekapselt wie die Splitter in meinem Bein". Doch dann rückt ausgerechnet Tochter Katja, selbst Lehrerin, dem Achtzigjährigen mit Fotos aus der Wehrmachtsausstellung zu Leibe und lässt seine "Dämme gegen das Erinnern" brechen. Zuerst zögerlich, dann immer bereitwilliger, ja fast besessen erzählt Musbach vom Krieg, von seinem Krieg, manchmal "wie von einer romantischen Landpartie", wie Katja ihm vorwirft.
Sie wittert überall Verklärung und Verdrängung, gleichzeitig verkraftet sie kaum die drastischen Erinnerungsbilder, die aus dem Munde des Vaters kommen "wie Eiter aus einer schmutzigen Wunde". Sie wird die Geister, die sie rief, nicht mehr los, schwankt zwischen anklagendem Pathos ("Blumen blühen auch unter einem Galgen.") und blankem Unverständnis. "Er sollte erzählen, was sie hören wollte", doch was will sie eigentlich? Dem Leser jedenfalls gehen Musbachs Berichte über große und kleine Grausamkeiten und die "Angst vor körperlicher Zertrümmerung" näher als jedes noch so aufwändige Hollywood-Epos über Vietnam oder den D-Day.
Genau wie Katja (und Uwe Timm Am Beispiel meines Bruders) haben wir Mühe, "das ganze Bild zu sehen", das Leid der Soldaten nicht gegen die Verbrechen der Wehrmacht aufzurechnen, beides gleichermaßen gelten zu lassen, ohne dass alles gleich gültig wird. Dass der faktengesättigte Roman darüber nicht zum Lehrstück verkommt, verdankt er den glaubwürdigen Hauptfiguren, einer gnadenlos poetischen Sprache und Hahns Weigerung, sich auf eine Sichtweise festzulegen. Dieses Bemühen führt im letzten Teil allerdings zu einigen seltsamen Handlungssprüngen.
Hans Musbach -- "immer dagegen und doch immer dabei" -- wäre uns auch so in guter, nein: in zwiespältiger Erinnerung geblieben. Wie Christoph Amend versucht Hahn die Großväter zum Sprechen zu bringen, stellvertretend für die junge Generation und modellhaft für die Achtundsechziger. Zur Nachahmung empfohlen? Vielleicht.
