Full color fold-outs of four superb Russian icons combine with the studied reflections of Henri J.M. Nouwen to offer the reader a unique way to pray with sacred images as much as with words. The meditations are the fruit of Nouwen's long viewing of the icons as the iconographer intended--as holy places, not as decorations. [via]

The author writes: franny came out in the new yorker in 1955, and was swiftly followed, in 1957 by zooey. Both stories are early, critical entries in a narrative series i'm doing about a family of settlers in twentieth-century new york, the glasses. It is a long-term project, patently an ambiguous one, and there is a real-enough danger, i suppose that sooner or later i'll bog down, perhaps disappear entirely, in my own methods, locutions, and mannerisms. On the whole, though, i'm very hopeful. I love working on these glass stories, i've been waiting for them most of my life, and i think i have fairly decent, monomaniacal plans to finish them with due care and all-available skill [via]

Why are modern Christians so indistinguishable from everyone else? Why don't they stand out in virtue and joy? How could the early saints pray constantly, fast valiantly, and love their enemies?
Today's Christianity has come untethered from its historic roots, says Frederica Mathewes-Green, yet we can recover its power by reviving this ancient, transcultural faith. Drawing on Christian writings throughout the early centuries, Mathewes-Green explores prayer, fasting, and alms-giving as aids to "theosis"?total transformation in Christ. [via]

This unique study provides the reader with both a historical and spiritual understanding of the prayer which simply invokes the name of Jesus.
To pronounce the name of Jesus in a holy way is an all-sufficient and surpassing aim for any human life... We are to call to mind Jesus Christ until the name of the Lord penetrates our heart, descends to its very depths... The Name of Jesus, once it has become the center of our life, brings everything together.
So writes the "Monk of the Eastern Church" in the course of the present work. To those who wonder how such claims can be advanced on behalf of the Jesus Prayer, and how it is that this particular way of praying continues to appeal so powerfully to contemporary Christians, Eastern and Western, Orthodox and non-Orthodox, this short book provides an answer. Starting with the veneration of the Holy Name in the Old and the New Testament, the author traces the gradual development of the Jesus Prayer first in Byzantium and then in the Slav lands. He concludes with practical suggestions for its use today, showing how it is a prayer not only of the past but equally for the twentieth century.
Indeed, there are good reasons to believe that the "way of the name," as he call it, is being followed by more Christians in our own day than ever before - a striking sign of hope in an age of anxiety. Simple yet profound, this book reveals to us the secret of the continuing attraction exercised by the Jesus Prayer. Since its first appearance some thirty-five years ago, it has become a minor "classic" of the spiritual life, and it still remains the best introduction to the subject. - Bishop Kallistos Ware, from the Foreword [via]

The spiritual traditions of the Eastern Orthodox Church are all but unknown to most Christians in the West, who often think of Christianity as split into two camps: Bible-based Protestantism and sacramental Catholicism. Yet in The Mountain of Silence, sociologist Kyriacos Markides suggests that Orthodox spirituality offers rich resources for Western Christians to integrate the head and the heart, and to regain a more expansive view of Christian life. The book combines elements of memoir, travelogue, and history in a single story. Markides journeys to a cluster of monasteries on Mount Athos, an isolated peninsula in northern Greece and one of the holiest sites in the Orthodox tradition. He also visits the troubled island of Cyprus, largely occupied by Turkey since 1974, and makes the acquaintance of a monk named Father Maximos, who has established churches, convents, and monasteries. Markides, a native Cypriot, tells the tale of this journey in a tone that's loose and light, with many excursions on Church history and Greek and Turkish politics. But despite the easygoing tone, the importance of this book is potentially immense. The Mountain of Silence introduces a world that is entirely new to many Western readers, and unveils a Christian tradition that reveres the mystical approach to God as much as the rational, a tradition that Markides says "may have the potential to inject Christianity with the new vitality that it so desperately needs." --Michael Joseph Gross [via]

Thousands have fallen in love with the anonymously authored book The Way of a Pilgrimthe account of an ordinary man's encounter with the Eastern Orthodox Christian practice of the Jesus Prayer, which consists of the constant repetition of the short phrase, "Lord Jesus Christ, have mercy upon me." Here is the perfect introduction to this life-changing practice, as it was taught by one of the great spiritual lights of Russia. Bishop Ignatius Brianchaniov (18071867) provides wise instruction and advice covering all aspects of the practice, from how to get started, to approaching difficulties that arise, to dealing with friends and family who don't get what you're doing, to making this prayer (also called the Prayer of the Heart) the foundation of your life. The first Russian Orthodox title in the distinguished Classics of Western Spirituality" series, and the first Orthodox titles in some time, The Pilgrim's Tale is one of the most widely read and important examples of Russian spiritual literature.
The author of The Pilgrim's Tale, which is devoted to various aspects of the Jesus Prayer, has been identified on the basis of other witnesses as Russian Orthodox monk Archimandrite Mikhail Kozlov. This translation is the first in English to be taken from the earliest version of the text preserved in Optino manuscript 456, written in the late 1860s. Other current versions are based on later translations.
Preceded by a preface by the eminent historian/author/educator Jaroslav Pelikan, The Pilgrim's Tale gives testimony to the depth and richness of the Russian spiritual tradition. It deserves a wide readership among spiritual seekers of all faiths and will be welcome in university and seminary courses on spirituality and theology. [via]

"Lord Jesus Christ, Son of God, have mercy on me."
This simple saying derived from Scripture has long been used by Christians in the East as a form of contemplative prayer. In recent decades, understanding and use of the Jesus Prayer has spread from the Eastern Orthodox tradition and into the lives and spirituality of many Western Christians.
Both Brother Ramon, an Anglican Franciscan monk, and Bishop Simon Barrington-Ward, a former Anglican bishop, practiced, taught, and wrote about the Jesus Prayer for over twenty years. Then, stirred by a sense that the Holy Spirit was guiding them, they came together for a shared week of prayer at Glasshampton Monastery in England.
Praying the Jesus Prayer Together shares what they learned in an experience they describe as a "week of glory," and a week marked by Brother Ramons physical suffering. Although Brother Ramons cancer ultimately disrupted their collaboration, they nevertheless discovered how profoundly it enriched and enhanced their communion as they prayed the Jesus Prayer together. With the clarity and depth characteristic of the classics, this spiritual bestseller lays out a perceptive and insightful plan for living a spiritual life and achieving the ultimate goal of that life -- union with God.
Nouwen views our spiritual "ascent" as evolving in three movements. The first, from loneliness to solitude, focuses on the spiritual life as it relates to the experience of our own selves. The second, from hostility to hospitality, deals with our spiritual life as a life for others. The final movement, from illusion to prayer, offers penetrating thoughts on the most mysterious relationship of all: our relationship to God. Throughout, Nouwen emphasizes that the more we understand (and not simply deny) our inner struggles, the more fully we will be able to embrace a prayerful and genuine life that is also open to others' needs.
Reaching Out is a rich book to be read, reread, pondered, and shared with others. "It does not offers answers or solutions," Nouwen cautions, "but is written in the conviction that the quest for an authentic Christian spirituality is worth the effort and the pain, since in the midst of this quest we can find signs offering hope, courage, and confidence." Written in the 19th century by an anonymous Russian pilgrim and translated from the Russian by R.M. French, this little book has become a spiritual classic on the Jesus Prayer. Filled with insights on how to maintain a prayerful presence in the face of predicaments, adventures and calamities, it was preserved for posterity by the pilgrim's spiritual adviser, a wise old monk who recorded these tales of the pilgrim's dedicated life-style, and then began to pass the manuscript on to those who wanted to know why Jesus told his disciples to "pray without ceasing." This narrative about the wayfarer's longings to communicate with God is especially inspiring and apt for today's busy person who is looking for that quiet center of spiritual strength. [via]

Ultimately, he discovers the different meanings and methods of prayer as he travels to his ultimate destination, Jerusalem.

The Way of a Pilgrim is a spiritual classic, but its origins are shrouded in mystery. It came to a remote monastery in Greece in the 19th century and was first published in 1884. Whether it is literal, fictitious, metaphorical, or pedagogical is unknown. The story follows an itinerant spiritual wanderer, all the time practicing Saint Paul's exhortation to "pray without ceasing." Specifically, the pilgrim repeats one prayer unceasingly, the Jesus prayer, until it becomes a sort of mantra. Through repetition of the prayer and encounters with his fellow inhabitants of 19th-century Russia and Siberia, the wanderer finds a spiritual enlightenment.
The Way of a Pilgrim is an oddity, but it can also be strikingly profound. In its sequel, A Pilgrim Continues His Way, the pilgrim engages an even richer dramatis personae in dialogues and spiritual lessons. Olga Savin's crisp, straightforward translation preserves the distinctive timelessness that makes the book great spiritual literature. This edition also includes three appendices that elaborate on the narrative's themes and a helpful glossary. --Eric de Place [via]
